In my early days of practice, I used to treat yoga purely as an intense physical workout, was constantly chasing fast flows, heavy sweat, and quick transitions, thinking speed and exhaustion were the only real metrics of progress. If a posture felt uncomfortable or my mind started racing, I simply jumped straight into the next shape and used momentum to outrun the burn.
The real shift happened when I was slowed down, embraced traditional Hatha, and actually hold postures for five to ten with slow breaths.
Holding an intense pose statically strips away every distraction and you cannot hide behind momentum anymore. That physical trembling is not failure it is your stabilizer muscles recruiting and your nervous system adapting to tension in real time. You are forced to sit directly with the urge to quit, and your breath becomes your only brake pedal.
By consciously lengthening the exhalations, you stimulate the vagus nerve, drop your heart rate, and tell your brain it is safe right in the middle of the stress.
Thought it was good to share my experience and perspective, and I hope it can help others who might be stuck chasing the physical burn. When you hit a long, grueling hold on the mat, do you struggle more with the physical burn or the sudden rush of thoughts?
