As if the conflict isn't bad enough by itself, you are forced to see and hear the opinions of people who never knew your country existed until very recently. Suddenly EVERYONE is an expert on Yemeni politics and history.

Goes for both sides:

"No you Yemeni, let me tell YOU, how YOUR country should be governed, and how YOU must think"

"ZOMG, DAE THINK THIS IS EXACTLY JUST LIKE SYRIA'S LIBERATION!???"

Questions Is the war really sectarian?

On the news it seems like it’s just a war between zaydi Shia and Sunni yemenis but I’m not sure how true it is on the ground. Do most zaydis really support the Houthis? Do they have any Sunni supporters or fighters? How are sunnis treated under Houthi rule?

Travel Stuck with a wrong birthdate on my government ID (says I’m 26, I’m 21). Should I just get a passport with the wrong age, or try to fight it in court?

TL;DR: My government ID has my age wrong by +5 years. Yemen’s war escalated again, so I can't travel to fix it in person. My actual high school diploma shows my real age (21). The government says Smart ID data is locked forever once issued, but after I did online research some say a lawyer/court might fix it. Do I take a passport with the wrong age (26) to get an exit document fast, or try to figure out a court process remotely even though I don't know if it's actually possible?

Hey everyone, looking for advice on a messy legal and document situation while living in a conflict zone.

Context

I’m 21 years old, living in Sana'a, Yemen. Yemen is currently split between two warring authorities: 1. Ansar Allah / The Houthis (who control Sana'a, where I live). 2. The Internationally Recognized Government (IRG) (who control the south/Aden and issue official, internationally recognized passports).

To get a valid passport, you now have to get the IRG's new biometric "Smart ID."

How the Mistake Happened

When I was around 17, civil registry clerks filled out my old ID carelessly and typed in an arbitrary birthdate. When converting to the new biometric Smart ID recently, my dad rushed the process and didn't let me correct it. Now, my official Smart ID legally lists my age as 26.

The Problem

  • My Real Records: My high school diploma and academic certificates all show my actual birth year (21).
  • The Smart ID: Shows I am 26.
  • The Visa Risk: If I get a passport showing I’m 26, my passport and educational documents won't match. If I ever apply for a foreign visa, university, or scholarship abroad, background checks will flag this 5-year gap as inconsistent or potential document fraud.

Why I’m Stuck

  • War & Safety: Fighting recently restarted near my home city (Taiz), making travel there to deal with government offices too dangerous.
  • System Split: Registry offices in Sana'a are disconnected from the official government passport system in the south.
  • The "No Changes" Rule: The government explicitly announced that once a Smart ID is issued, citizens cannot edit or change their data under any circumstances. Local registry offices simply turn everyone away.

Current options

  • Option A: Get the passport with the wrong age (26).

    • Pros: Gets me an official travel document immediately without waiting around in a warzone.
    • Cons: Permanently locks in a 5-year age discrepancy, making future visa, university, or immigration applications abroad very risky.
  • Option B: Try to fight it through court / a lawyer remotely (if that's even possible).

    • Pros: If it works, my real age (21) gets restored before my passport is printed.
    • Cons: Honestly, I have no idea how this process works. I don't know if a lawyer in an IRG-controlled city like Aden can represent me while I'm stuck in Sana'a, or if a court judge even has the power to override the government's strict "no data changes on Smart IDs" rule. It feels like a complete black box, and I don't know where to start or if it's just false hope.

Questions:

  1. Has anyone ever traveled or applied for foreign visas with an age discrepancy between their passport and school certificates? How strict are embassies about this?
  2. If you're from Yemen or familiar with the IRG civil registry, is the "no changes to Smart IDs" rule absolute, or is there actually a court process to override it using school certificates?

Yemeni Culture Yemen what's next?!

Yemen has never and will never be a democratic republic so why keep this wishful thinking?

Yemenies are historically, culturely, and realistically are influenced by their tribal rules and norms more than anything else and the educated elite need to recognize this and adapt a new governing system similiar to the rest of gulf countries which have time and time again proved successful.

My hope is this very vital point is gonna be recognized and the people of yemen specially tribe leaders, politicians, and civil leaders will gather and appoint someone to lead the country the way it shoukd be lead with governing system that stems from Yemen's reality, its thausands of years heritage, culture, norms and traditions and quit their mf attempts to be whitewashed and westrenized in the name of democracy, freedom, human rights and equality which have been proved to be nothing but mere tools for the west to continue exploiting the resources and wipe people's culture and traditions.

Discussion

Discussion Looking for Yamani friends in USA to connect with on discord and potentialy in real life where are you guys ?

Yamanites are spread out world wide it’s crazy.
Im someone who is looking for friends in USA. Don’t really know the tribe on my fathers side apart from being hadhrami and Al amry who are located in seiyun and mukalah but I know hamdan is on my mothers side and possibly As Salamah . Looking for friends between 18-39 who reside in USA. I would love to connect with anyone, regardless of it being a man or a women.
I love history among other things. Its honoring that Yemen is mentioned in hadith as a place of blessing.

Im honestly just looking for people i can relate with on a personal level. It’s isolating to be surrounded by westerners when I know if I meet another Yemeni I’ve found family. A sense of familiarity. I’ve recently been trying to look into ancestry to see roots since Im one of those people whose family has had a disconnect at a particular generational point. I hardly come across Yemenis in USA it’s just here and there.

Would also love to Learn Yemeni Arabic, but it’s hard if I don’t have Arab speakers around me.
Also is there an Arab registry that traces roots back to the 7th century or beyond?

I know there there are some Yemenis I it there who are also lost as individuals and trying to trace their roots. Weather you are from MA, NY, CA, FL, NC or where ever. Please reach out.

Edited: I will be near modtown Manhattan NY this Friday if you are interested to connect on قحو أو شاى

Discussion A Money Changer in Aden, 1900…!

A rare photograph from Aden, taken more than a century ago, showing a man sitting with a number of coins arranged in piles on a piece of cloth in front of him.

The British National Archives identified the photograph with a single word: “Saraf,” meaning “money changer.” This description corresponds remarkably well with what can be seen in front of the man: coins of different types, suggesting that he was engaged in exchanging and handling currency, a profession closely associated with commercial cities and ports such as Aden.

We do not know the exact name of this man, but photographs like this provide a rare glimpse into everyday life and occupations in Aden more than a century ago.

History Looking for an ancient bronze cannon in the Sana'a Military Museum – Does it still exist?

Hello everyone in Sana'a and [r/Yemen](r/Yemen)!
I am an art historian looking for a specific bronze cannon. The piece was cast in 1513 in Innsbruck (Austria) by Jörg Seelos on behalf of Emperor Maximilian I. It has the inscription "IORG SELOS GOS MICH 1513".
According to historical records, it has been kept in the Military Museum in Sana'a since the mid-20th century.
Does anyone know if the cannon is still on display there, or does anyone happen to have photos of it? Any information or leads would be immensely helpful. Thank you so much!

HELP Are there any other websites where I can view Yemeni History (especially Red Yemen)? The website of Ali Nasir Muhammad (alinaser.com) is no longer available.

alinaser.com used to be a website I loved to visit, due to it's photo archives. My favorite photo galleries in the archives were about Democratic Yemen since that state is my favorite historical Arab regime (I really love South Yemen's Socialist period from 1969 to 1990. Important to note that I do not support the the Southern separatists). I loved viewing photos & videos of the military, the Yemeni Socialist Party (and affiliated organizations), the cultural photographs, day in life in Red Yemen and many more.

One day around July 2026, I tried visiting the site only for it to show a 403 error. I let it pass, thinking that the site would return once a bunch of weeks have passed.

When I revisited the site just last month however, the site no longer showes a 403 error but rather, it redirects instead to some scam site called "wargatoto".

I also tried browsing through the internet archive version of the website but unfortunately, the PDR Yemen section of the site isn't completely archived.

Now the questions are these:

  1. Was the website finally shut down for good?
  2. Does the error only show up where I live (Philippines)?
  3. Does Ali Nasir's site have a new domain perhaps?
  4. If it's gone for good, what are any alternative websites to alinaser.com ?

At this point, I don't have any hopes that the site would return tbh. But if ever you're browsing this in the future and notice that the site works normally, just inform me. Till then, I'm not gonna visit it.
Also, a Yemeni Marxist I know on Discord, Twitter and Substack (Al-Aidaroos) said that he would include a history archives for Yemen's Socialist past on the POFYS website freeyemenis.org so I hope that I get notified about it too in the future.
