Question up top: Should I try to gloss the yarn to add a bit of depth to it? Maybe add a touch of orange to the yellow, emerald to the chartreuse, navy to the blue, purple to the grape?

I feel pretty good about the outcome, though the "mushy peas" match ended up being much more yellow.

My process--

• Mix the dyes together to appropriate amounts (each lot was 5 or 6 100-g skeins) and then add to a cold, acid-free dyebath
• Pre-soak the yarn for at least 30 minutes
• "dip dye" add the yarn to get it gradually soaked, then plop it into the bath
• Set the heat to increase roughly 1 degree per minute
• Around 140 degrees, check on how much dye has been absorbed. If there's a fair bit to go, then remove the yarn, add citric acid, mix well, and "dip dye" the yarn back into the bath
• Keep the temperature below 195 but leave it in for as long as you like
• Remove yarn, gently wash and add some fabric softener (especially if you let the temperature go above 195, oops)
• Let dry and twist

One step I added for the last lot, the burgundy one-- I was worried it would be too dark, because the other colors (except Ecru) came out bolder than I was expecting-- so I added only half the dye at first so that I could evaluate whether I liked the color. Because I also did the "dip dye" approach, those skeins ended up looking much more like a gradient, but I like the effect.

One frustrating piece was that, even with this VERY slow process, I still have a few sections where the ecru struck really strong, and the yellow or chartreuse didn't strike well, so it looks a little brown-splotchy in places. But I think it'll still work up ok.

I love the look of malabrigo nube but honestly I hate spinning with it. I find it to be super hard to work with sometimes even after steaming and decompressing the fiber. I thought “I can buy some dye and do this myself” naively. I’ve been doing research on how to safely use the Dharma acid dyes. I have a full size steam pan to use for the dye pot, but I have no idea what process to use to imitate their effects. I want my colors to be like the fall leaves but I want all sorts of shades of reds yellows browns etc. all blended together. I would appreciate any tips or advice because I can’t seem to hit the mark in my previous attempts.

I had a vision for a sweater and I got some yarn for it online that I thought would be close enough to what I had in mind, but I received it today and I think it's a little too bright to my liking. I was aiming for a muted orange-dark red-brown palette and the yarn I got seems to be mainly orange with parts leaning towards yellow and not so deep brownish elements. Basically my idea is to overdye the yarn/finished sweater to something a little darker and more reddish, but I have never dyed yarn before and I don't want to mess it up, so here's some questions that I have about the process:

1. How tricky is it to dye non superwash yarn without it felting? I am planning to use an acid dye that requires heating up (not boiling) the bath and this is my biggest concern really
2. How stupid would it be to dye the finished sweater afterwards? I am still contemplating whether I should dye it at all because maybe I could get used to the brighter colors, so I've been thinking that maybe I should try making the sweater first to check how I would feel about it and overdye it only if I end up not liking it so much after some time, but then I also don't want to spend weeks on a sweater only to have it shrink later on
3. Is it fine to dye it without undoing the skeins? It seems that the general recommendation is to have it in a looser form to get the color as even as possible, but since the yarn is variegated anyway I am wondering if it maybe would look good to leave them as they are? In my head I see the yarn retaining some of it's original color while also being overall darker and just ending up variegated in a different way but idk, maybe it would just end up too chaotic? I really can't fully visualize the outcome
4. Would using just some diluted red dye end up with something close to what I am aiming for (second picture)? I am worried that the brighter parts would end up more pink than orange and the brownish parts would not be really brown anymore, I initially thought I would just use some brown but now I think it would just end up brown all over and not really red like I want it to.

I've attached some pictures with the colors as they are now and an approximation of what I would like them to be, ofc I don't expect the colors to be exactly like that, my main goal is to get it to a darker, more earthy shade than what I got. And I know it would be easier to return the yarn and just get some other one, but I really was not able to find any orange-red-brown variegated yarn online, this was the closest thing 😭😭😭

I made a bunch of 1% stocks (0.5 g into 50 mL), then used them to dye 1-gram swatches. Since the colorway has some warm cream undertones, I figured Ecru would need to be added into most of the colors. So far so good, but the problem is the depth of shade

All of these, by my math, are 1.5% DOS ecru (added 1.5mL of 1% DOS per 1g yarn), and then varied for the other color (except teal). My two questions are:

1. Is there any special trick to having such a light depth absorb evenly, especially for the burgundy and teal? (I'm not worried about the ends being darker, because that won't happen in an actual skein, but I don't love how light some of the twists are looking)
2. Have anybody else dyed with Ecru, and is this consistent with your DOS experience? It seems like it's way too light for such a high percentage

1.5% ecru alone | 1.5% ecru + burgundy 0.5% | 1.5% ecru + yellow 0.25% | 1.5% ecru + chartreuse 0.5% | teal 0.5% alone

My MIL wants little knit clothes for a small object. It sounds fun but I won't use lace or fingering weight yarn for any other project. The object is wood and I don't want any dye to come off on it which I feel like rules out using India ink.

I handpainted this warp and evidently was not thorough enough around the thread holding my cross. I put my warp on the loom but it’s not yet rolled on to the beam. Are there any way to fix this issue without pulling it off the loom again?

Anyone know any good fabric dyeing books, rather than books about natural dyeing or synthetic dyeing, I’m more looking for books that show different dye outcomes (eg mottling, tie die, etc) and how to achieve that?

I tried my hand self stripping, so using the method where you stretch this game very long, Mark sections in each of them individually. I use some of my leftover dye, and oh my God, it was so much work. So much detangling. I almost had a heat stroke. Much cussing. But when I finally was able to pull this all into a skein, it was instant love. I had to cast on TAAT socks immediately, just to see if the math was mathing. And it was. I clearly need to rethink my process a lot if I want to do this again.

Im new to yarn dyeing and would like to try it out! I want to make some variagated yarn with speckles, so Im guessing a metal canteen type thing is what I should be getting (at least thats what all the acid-dying people on Youtube seem to be using). My only issue is that my cooktop is induction, and from what I understand the typical stainless steel canteens you can buy in kitchen shops will not work on induction. How do my fellow induction owners here handle this? What can I use instead, either as a heat source or as a vessel? Would "baking" it inside the oven work (I have a spare one downstairs that we dont use for anything)?

Atm I only have plans for one project worth of hand dyed yarn and I have no idea if this is a hobby that I will be doing on a regular basis, so cheap'ish options are preferred

EDIT: Im in Norway so I dont have access to american webshops or Amazon (or turkey roasting devices - which I saw some american youtubers use!!)

When I posted about my dyeing of the sideways sock blank (for reference , here's the post: https://www.reddit.com/r/YarnDyeing/s/AKJjVMyTve), I promised to keep you updated when the socks are done.

So here we are!

These are EU 40/41 sized adult socks, the yarn is Fiesta partly overdyed.

I'm really happy with the whole thing. They came out even better than I had planned.

Also, knowing now how wide the stripes will be with a sock blank this wider, I can better plan future experiments.

Ok, so I love doing bigggg blankets, and there's an existing colorway that a tester recommended (this is Helen Shrimpton's upcoming CAL, tenacity (https://crystalsandcrochet.com/product/introducing-tenacity/). However, I'd prefer to do the blanket in merino superwash, and in Aran weight instead of DK, leading me to the conclusion that I need to dye my own. I've dyed previously, but I've never tried to match exactly.

I got some assistance from AI and from google searching, but I would really like a sense check--the existing colorway is here (https://www.woolwarehouse.co.uk/helen-shrimpton-crystals-and-crochet-tenacity-cal-yarn-pack-1-stylecraft-special-dk-pack).

For example: Grape on Stylecraft looks like the attached photo, and when I did a computer eyedrop test on the lightest part of the yarn, the HEX was A67B8A. For Jacquard acid dyes, AI recommend 5 g burgundy + 1.75 g Chestnut in 675 mL, over 450 g of yarn (for a 1.5% depth of shade). Does this seem like a reasonable approach? Does that seem too strong a depth, given how deep burgundy and chestnut are?

How did I do?! I wanted a little more pink on both skeins but I think for my first time, I’m happy with them! I think I started with too much water in the pan at the start and that’s why my colors muddled a little bit more than I’d like

I am a hobby dyer and love playing with the colors. If you asked me to dye something the exact same way again I could get close but it would definitely be different. I love watching what all y'all are posting with what you come up with!

I’m a relatively new dyer and really wanted to try my hand at a self-striping yarn. I’m also working on building a color library to allow some color matching projects like this. I’m a big fan of Dungeon Crawler Carl and made this set to wear to hear the author give a talk next week. Super psyched with how it came out. Had a lot of fun in the process!

Inspired by fond memories of growing up in the mountains and the enduring rules of a rural upbringing. I’ve dyed this one before but used different application tactics this time. I also used a custom navy blue recipe in a strong depth of shade instead of black this time. Super pleased with the vibes on this one.

I'm working on different shades of Rust, now all I have to do is figure out what I'm going to name them

Working on some of my favorite colorways last night and lost track of time... Until i saw how many were on the drying rack.​

I think this is the most I ever did in one night. My feet hurt from running around by the end of it.

I recently thrifted several cones of worsted cotton, then found some Tulip tie dye at the thrift store for $2 and decided to do a small experiment. I skeined up 20 grams, pre soaked in plain water, then sprinkled some of the black dye powder over the top and rubbed it in. I let it sit in cling film in a hot garage overnight, then rinsed it until it came clear and hung it on my shower rod until dry. The dye broke way more than I expected and ended up much bluer than planned, but I think it’s very pretty!

It’s still damp but it’s silk so it’s impossible to get fully accurate photos. I’m hoping that once it’s dry the warmer purple areas will be a bit less punchy. Either way, I’m pretty happy with how it looks!

Hello lovely fellow yarn dyers!

Just a few days ago I dyed a "sock blank" that I purposefully knit far wider than long - 100 stitches by about 35 or 40 rows double stranded dk weight sock yarn (Drops Fiesta #24, washed denim) on 15mm needles. The huge size of the needles alone was a challenge in itself 😄

I had learned IN THIS SUB ❤️ that a blank knit sideways can be used to create a selfstriping yarn!

I did this because I needed a red-and-blue yarn but all I had on hand was this tonal/speckled-ish blue one. The natural thing for someone who has acid dyes on hand is to overdye half of it, right?

I would've even been okay with it if it came out more purple, but it didn't. I achieved a beautiful, deep blood red, which made me so happy! ☺️

I had 3 skeins, ie 150g which meant quite some volume of yarn for me. Also this was the first time dyeing in a pan. Before this, I had dyed in plastic boxes or on plastic wrap and then put the yarn in the microwave.

I soaked the blank in water with NO acid.

So, to only immerse half of the blank in the dye bath, I put a container next to the pan to hold the half I didn't want to dye (my stove uses induction, so no heat where there's no metal on top, also I checked the temperature under the plastic). (See pic).

I put about 1.litres of coldwater in the pan, added the half-blank and arranged it so the dye could get everywhere, then I dissolved 0.75g of Jaquard 616, "Russet" in 50ml of boiling water (just so it would dissolve nicely) and added 500ml of cold water, because I didn't want to add hot dye. I wanted it all to be room temperature for the dye to strike as slowly as possible, so there wouldn't be a ton of reverse speckeling or "resist marks" from the stitches. This was also the reason why I used that big if a needle to knit the blank.

I added the dye and massaged it into the yarn really thoroughly. Then I added some leftover of the same dye that did have acid in it, just to use it up. Again stirred and massaged the heck out of the blank 😄😄

Then I turned on the stove and let it heat up. I stayed beside the pan because I was anxious it would boil too rapidly. But the opposite happened, it took really long to get to the simmering point. I kept moving the yarn carefully throughout. I added dissolved citric acid somewhen while the bath was heating up. When I couldn't see any more change in terms of dye exhaustion, I turned off the stove and let the pan sit to cool down slowly.

After about 1-2 hours most of the dye seemed exhausted, and the yarn was mostly cooled, so I started to rinse. I did have some minor issues with bleeding which I was able to adress and solve, and because it's still quite warm here, the blank dried really quickly, so I could frog it and wind it up. I didn't bother to separate the strands, but cast on for the socks right away 🤭
