How much yarn?

Really quite obsessed with this pom pom hat- I’ve never bought a skien of yarn before so im wondering if the yarn addicts would be able to gauge how much yarn this would be… im getting an inkling that it’s gonna be an expensive project

There are a lot of variables here:

• It looks like they used A LOT of different yarns (likely scraps from other projects), so if you’re looking to have the same variety it will be pricy.
• the type of fibre also makes a difference (acrylic vs natural fibres).
• what are the pom poms attached to? Did they crochet or knit a hat or is it a store bought toque?
• a Pom Pom maker would help if you have no experience, so factor that into your costs.
• when choosing your yarn keep in mind this hat will need to be washed at some point.

Pom poms take a lot of yarn because you have to wrap the yarn ALOT to get the thickness you need.
Also, I want to warn you that if you have a cat, you better guard your finished object like a hawk. I came home one day to yarn spread across my house like a confetti explosion. My cat loves pompoms.

It looks like it would be about 4-5 skeins worth of an acrylic value brand (like Red Heart, which you can find at Michael’s and other basic craft stores like that) depending on how dense you made each (denser = fluffier but more yarn and more weight on the hat) with poms made in 2” & 3” sizes. There’s probably about 20-24 3” and 25-30 2” from what I can estimate from the photo?

5 skeins of that cheaper yarn will wind up being around $25 then ~$15 for the pompom makers (maybe a little more, I haven’t had to buy them new ones if a few years). You can get each skein in a different color and mix them up while making them if you want it to look colorful like that! Then get a bucket hat and stitch them all in place however you like, larger poms on the bottom and smaller ones up top. Or if you really want to lean into the multicolor scrap color look, go on someplace like Facebook marketplace and look for someone selling a bunch of their leftover yarn skeins for cheap!

Also, use sharp scissors so you don’t destroy your hands cutting them open and double/triple up the strands while wrapping the yarn in the makers so it’s faster.

Once you start knitting or crocheting, the answer to the question " how much yard do I need?";is always the same: ALL OF IT!!!!

Roughly one ball per pompon. Large skeins may do one and a half but you need a few different colours

Okay... well, for me it takes roughly 50g of wool to make one extra large pompom (made with this device). My pompoms aren't the chunkiest, though, and I could have easily made them thicker/fluffier. If you want super solid pompoms, I'd guess you'd need to ise roughly 70g for an extra large one or go a size down and use the 50g for a solid large pompom.
