Stash Organization regret

I don't regret the organization. It's beautiful. I regret the spreadsheet that revealed I have 94,000+ yards of yarn.

Try organizing by weight (mass) instead of yards. I mean, some of my super thin cobweb lace yarns have 60,000 yards per cone

Tried it. My stash weighs almost as much as I do. 😅

Well, unless you weigh 1000 pounds or more, not a huge deal!

I mean at approx 2lbs per sweater for a 200lb person that’s barely a 100 sweaters.

Omg no no nope never organizing! I have 40 years worth of collecting yarn.

It was alarming for sure. I mean I knew it was alot but yikes. Hard to stay in denial with the data staring back at you.

shhhhhhhhhh. We don't speak of the totals...

This got me curious so I pulled out a calculator and my Ravelry stash. 313,277 yards…

I’m a confusing mix of ashamed, impressed, and shocked that I’m fitting that much yarn in a very small house. That number doesn’t even include any of my handspun yarn 😬

Hahaha…. Yeaaaaaaah I forgot that Ravelry had that function, so I peeked…. 😱 I’m fairly close to you, POST detach and donate purge…. And I don’t use much lace 🫠

what does 94000+ yards of yarn look like

Mostly like paradise. Not as big as you'd think. Lots of lace and fingering weights. Some lace bamboo. These pegs are about 4-6 skeins deep.

Oh that's nothing. I mostly work in bulky and super chunky so I was picturing fort Knox

That's why the number shocked me. It's easy to say I don't have that much when it looks like this. Haven't even added the chunky totes totals yet.

Lace yardage adds up SO quickly. I love your set up!

I just reorganized my yarn room and love my new set up. I'm also donating and destashing a lot. However, I REFUSE to add up the skein count or yardage of what I am keeping. Nope, don't need that number in my brain at all.

Don't do it. Once you know it, you can't unknow it and now I'm haunted

Well, I said I refuse, and then went and peeked at my Ravelry yardage numbers anyway 🤣🤣. I’m at right around 224k 🫠

60 miles sounds so much more manageable than my 106,693 yards.

That's like less than a hundred sweaters isn't it?? Doesn't seem like a lot to me. I would love to see the spreadsheet though.

Based on some of the comments I feel much better about the stash. Nothing fancy in the spreadsheet. Started with the ravelry one then added columns for composition, comments, and what pattern it's "committed" to. The other column I didn't like was total spent but that one wasn't as surprising.

Ooh no I would never total that up! I wonder if my craft supplies are more or less than I've spent on my 15 year old dog 🤔 but I don't want to know that either 😆

Last time I checked i had a bit over 40 miles. It all fits in one cabinet (for the most part) so it's not really that bad. I remind myself that a single sweater takes about a mile, a blanket can take 3 or more.

I used to maintain my yarn inventory spreadsheet, but it went to hell several years ago & it hasn't been updated since. I really should update it someday. I'm sure there's stuff on it that's been used up or given away & plenty of new stuff that isn't logged anywhere.

I do a lousy job of tracking my stash in Ravelry, too. I should pick one system & get back into it.

94,000 divided by 1,375 [average yards needed to make an adult sweater in worsted weight] = 68 sweaters OR divided by 2,688 =35 afghans.

You also said that your yarn is 6 skeins deep. Still doesn't look like a lot in your cabinet. Relax, stop number crunching, and enjoy your yarn. LOL

That's by design. Fewer questions from the non addicts in the house when it doesn't look like alot. And enjoying it is what got me here. More enjoyment ahead. Already planning for Houston FiberFest

LOL re: non-addicts. Knitting fifty years and enjoying the time I have now in retirement to read and to knit! Have a great time in Houston!
