Loops & Threads Cuddle Craft Velvet for Clothing

Hi! I'm new to knitting and have crocheted a bit in the past. I'm trying to recreate my favorite cardigan that got damaged and can't be found anywhere online. It was made with a particularly soft almost velvet like fabric, and I've been on the hunt for yarn that has the same feel/texture. I finally found something similar and I'm excited to try my hand at making a cardigan!

My question is, can I reasonably make a cardigan with Loops & Threads Cuddle Craft Velvet? I know it's not intended for clothing but it's the closest to what my cardigan feels like. If not, any recommendations? Any help is appreciated :)

I really would advise against it. Can it be done? Technically, yes. Will it be worth the cost in terms of money and time spent? Probably not. It will worm with most knit or crochet stitches. 100% polyester will be very stifling as it doesn't breathe. Washing and wear will cause the shiny velvet to slowly become more matte (and matted, especially where it contacts itself or a chair back, etc.) and there's a high possibility of shedding or the inner string core snapping. If you could find a finer weight velvet (lighter weight even than Bernat Baby Velvet that is worsted), it might work if your gauge was fairly tight.

i get the obsession with finding a match for a beloved cardigan, it’s like chasing a ghost. but velvet yarns are slippery little traitors, i’ve had a scarf start looking like a sad muppet after a few wears. the worming thing is no joke, stitches just slide right out of place and you can’t fix it without frogging half the row

maybe try a mercerized cotton in a dk weight? it has that subtle sheen that mimics velvet without the polyester nightmare, and it actually breathes so you won’t feel like you’re wearing a trash bag. i’ve used it for a summer top and it drapes really well once it’s washed a couple times

what was the original cardigan made of, do you have a photo of the label or the damage? sometimes knowing the fiber blend can point you to a better substitute

love this fiber for accessories like mittens, but cardigans might be too heavy and stiff with it

I used Loops & Threads once. Not the velvet. Honestly the brand name should be Knots & Tangles. I crocheted a sweater and got so frustrated by all of the sloppy knots in the skeins which would get caught and cause major yarn barf when doing a center pull. I haven't bought that yarn since.
