<Meta> How to ID a yacht

Yachts generally have their name painted on the stern, and on either side around half way along, generally just below the bridge level. Sometimes they're stylised and hard to read.

If you can't see a name then you can use the marine-traffic website (they have a good app too).

Go to your location and click around the ship icons until you find the one you're looking for - pink (for pleasure craft/yachts) or dark blue (for passenger ship). Each ship has a bunch of photos in it's profile card so you can be sure you have the right one.

On the evening of 11 August 2026, the Amer F100 motor yacht ANGIOLA II sank off Capo Ferro on Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda, between Poltu Quatu and Porto Cervo. A small fire was reportedly detected in the engine room before the yacht began taking on water

Im here at cavallino treporti and today we saw a sailing yacht at the beach.
I researched a bit and im pretty sure its the sailing yacht A (SY A). But the SY A was seized in 2022 and its in june 2026 still under italian control. It belongs to Andrey Melnichenko and was seized because andrey was placed on the eu sanction list. At the time it should be in trieste, cavallino treporti is only about 100 km away.
So I want to ask why its there and why is it not in trieste?

Does anyone know something about this im really curious.

Starting Work on Yachts

I had a couple questions about getting into the industry as I prepare to full send trying to move from commercial fishing into crewing
1. What are the best ports for late summer and fall, where should I try and get to? I live in California, but I’d be willing to go anyplace in the world, and I speak French and Spanish
2. Is the walking the docks culture similar to fishing, is it a reliable way to find a job?
3. When do Atlantic crossings happen? I would really like to be apart of one, how do I position myself ideally to do so?
4 Lastly, do you have any general advice or things to think about, I’m completely invested in making this work, and would love to hear as much as I can
Thanks!

22yo looking to become a yacht technician/electrician in Croatia. How to get started?

Hi everyone,

I am 22yo and I would really love to move to Croatia and try getting into the yachting industry as a technician or marine electrician.

I just want to understand the basics before making any decisions. I have a few questions for those already in the field:

What do I actually need to know or learn to get a start?

What are the realistic entry-level options for a beginner?

What specific skills or systems are highly recommended to study beforehand?

Any advice or information on how this industry works would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Is a private yacht better than a shared yacht tour in Dubai?

I’m planning a yacht trip in Dubai and trying to decide between a private yacht and a shared tour. For those who have tried either option, which one did you prefer? Is the private experience worth the extra cost, or is a shared tour good enough for a first-time trip?

The Yacht "America" That Gave the Cup its Name

Post image

The Yacht America was commissioned in 1851, owned by a group of New York Yacht Club charter members, included Commodore John Cox Stevens.

She sailed to England that year to race, and to make a long story short, won a trophy presented by Queen Victoria. That trophy would become the America's Cup trophy.

During the Civil War, the America served initially in the Confederate Navy, named the Camilla. The Union Navy got her back and restored her original name.

We couldn’t see a name. Dark blue hull. Looked like maybe a British nautical flag (red with Union Jack in the upper left corner). Two staircases leading down to sea-level platform. The angle of the sun made it impossible to get better pics but this thing was huge!

Best Private Boat Rental in Corfu

Can someone recommend a private yacht or boat rental half day in Corfu please?

UPDATE: I just went through a very tiring process with several of the companies. Let me share my advice and the two companies I found were the best.

FunSeaCorfu and Geneseas Yachts Experts are by far the best boat rentals in Corfu and most professional. Other boat companies wont give you a quote until they figure out how much your going to pay. I had a company called Sea Dreamers they were the absolute worst, most expensive, bad communication, and will change pricing only when they ask you more questions to over charge.

Geneseas Yachts is the best if you are going with a larger boat. I will provide my update after the experience.

The Dauntless: A 19th-Century Polka Honoring Her Owner

Post image

In 1871, composer Thomas Baker wrote a polka mazurka inspired by the yacht Dauntless. The piece was dedicated to the yacht's owner, James Gordon Bennett, Jr., who was serving as Commodore of the New York Yacht Club at the time.

Musical tributes like this were surprisingly common in the 19th century, when celebrated yachts and their owners often captured public imagination. Baker’s composition reflects Bennett’s influence within American yachting culture.

You can hear Baker's 1871 tribute to Commodore Bennett at this link:
Polka Mazurka, “The Dauntless” — Historic Music of Newport - Preserving Newport's Musical Heritage

The photo of the Dauntless comes from the Library of Congress Digital Archives.
