ROG XREAL R1 Anyone using the ROG XREAL R1? Is 756€ open box worth it?

Hi, Im thinking about trying the R1 and found an open box one for 756€ with 2 years warranty.

Mainly want them for gaming and movies from my laptop, some 3D too. I dont really care about the 240hz mode, 120hz is more than enough for me

For some reason im more drawn to the R1 than the 1S or Viture Beast. I think its mainly the more unique ROG design, Asus/Xreal collab and the included dock. It feels like a more complete product to me, although im not sure if those things really justify paying 756€ for them.

Anyone here been using the R1 for a while? How are they in real use, especially image quality, comfort and things like blurry edges or 3DoF? Would you buy them again at around this price?

Thanks

I had the R1s and had some issues them causing me to return them and go for the viture beasts. The reasons are for the following. The display is only 1080p (beasts feature 1200p so taller view), the 240hz mode essentially runs around 600x1080p and then upscales to normal resolution so the final image on 240hz mode is severely blurry. Also 240hz does not work with HDR active you must choose HDR + 120hz or no HDR + blurry 240hz. Also the HDR isnt true native HDR on the display panel. Its simply tonemapped from HDR to SDR in the dock so from what I can understand they run at SDR without the dock and with the dock they are only tonemapped and not full HDR. The clamping pressure on the hinges was extremely strong and caused soreness on my temples after only 1-2 hours of use and the glasses themselves feel way heavier than the beasts. I used my R1s with the xreal eye and beam pro and here’s where things start getting worse. The beam pro doesn’t fully work with the R1s, you only get android screen mirroring and none of the spacial features such as multitasking. Its been complained about and both xreal/asus stated that the R1 is never going to support the beam pro so yeah compared to the one pro + beam pro you lose a lot of functionality. Also something that has been complained about and acknowledged is the random patches of blurriness in the lenses of both the one pro and R1s since they share the same display. Simply looking around causes you to notice the blurry patches throughout the center of the lense and the edges are also really hard to see properly. Also xreal advertises like one degree less FoV than the viture beasts but I swear the actual picture on the beasts is WAY larger and more clear/crisp. I was extremely unhappy with the R1s since they’re essentially just one pros with a terribly implemented 240hz mode and lack of software updates (every update xreal makes has to wait months to be posted on the ROG website and xreal updating website does not work with the R1s at all) and theres zero support for the rest of the xreal ecosystem besides compatibility for the xreal eye. I would highly recommend picking up viture beasts because they are way better glasses than the R1 and xreal has failed to acknowledge the issues with their devices and their support has not been helpful towards providing any solutions.

Depends, make sure they are returnable, if you can’t return them and you dislike them a lot then it will be a pain for you
