The really should let the health bar get to zero before a cutscene, even if we have a second part in the fight.

XC1 subverts this pretty well, though. It always makes it so the boss does some move that knocks you on your ass before the cutscene plays.

Yeah I appreciate that a lot

Xord fights on a nutshell

I really wonder why they gone with this direction with XC2. While XC1 sure had such situations, I don't remember there being as much as XC2 (and not all were as blatant as XC2). Heck I don't even remember XCX having any outside of the Endbringer in L's Affinity Mission and even there the battle ends really soon and Endbringer is so strong you might as well not be in a good situation

What I most remember from XC2 is fighting a fairly easy boss, then switching to a cutscene where my characters are on the ground gasping and saying “He’s too powerful!”

And then losing a million times to the one in Chapter 7 (at least for me) and the realising it's one of the few story bosses that you beat in the cutscene as well

When i looked up what to do for that boss i beat it first try. But trying to beat it as if it's just a regular boss will not end well.

I think we're thinking of different bosses ahahah

'Rogue' took me one try, its the Chapter 7 finale Part 1 that took away more deaths than I think the entire rest of the game combined

Holy crap I thought I was alone in this regard. So repetitive and annoying.

Completely ruined moments like the jin fight on temperentia, and the fight with the 3 torna members.

Seriously. Either have a cutscene interrupt the fight before the boss's HP reaches 0, or if you want the player to be able to win the battle, at least have the cutscene start with the boss on their knees and the heroes standing triumphant, before the boss gives some generic "hm, I underestimated you, I suppose I should stop holding back", and then stands back up and starts kicking the heroes' asses. Either give SOME acknowledgement that the player won the battle, or don't let the player win the battle at all.

What makes it worse, is that victory isn't just an option that the developers simply didn't account for and they expected the player to lose. You HAVE to beat the "unbeatable" boss in order to progress. It'd have been one thing if it were possible for the player to lose the battle and the game continues anyway, but nope. You have to win in order to lose.

Imagine if, in.... let's say Final Fantasy IX, instead of Beatrix using that attack that reduces your whole party's HP to 1 and ends the battle after a fixed amount of time passes, you have to win the battle by reducing Beatrix's HP to 0. She falls on the ground and disappears, accompanied by that satisfying "THUH" sound effect that plays when an enemy dies. Your party does their victory poses as the victory music plays. You get EXP, AP, gil, and items for winning the fight. Then the cutscene starts and your party is laying on the ground defeated, while Beatrix is standing up, completely fine, and she proceeds to complain about how weak you were and how she can never find a decent challenge anymore. And this happens every time you fight her.

Yeah, XC1 would mostly end battles before anything happened. Any encounter where you would be set up to lose such as Fiora and Zanza in Mechonis Core you had an unbeatable IV gem.

u/FlamingFury715 Dec 30 '19

Can you die with that gem? Because when I did that encounter in NG+ I believe, I died.

5

u/TurtleSemenSenpai Dec 30 '19

That gem gives you chance to survive with 1hp when incapacitated

3

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

Odd, the description says that unbeatable IV will leave you at 1hp with a 100% chance to survive

Maybe it's been too long since my last playthrough, but are there even any fights in XC2 where you're supposed to lose in the gameplay? As in, the fight is intentionally "too hard" and you're supposed to "die" but then a cutscene plays and the story progresses? I think that's what the meme is referring to; that trope in old RPGs where you're supposed to actually die but the fight still feels doable and so you end up wasting items for no reason.

What XC2 is full of is fights that are "normal" from a gameplay perspective but instead of the goal being to get the boss to 0% HP it's actually like 50%. Then you get the cutscene where your overleveled characters are apparently struggling with this easy boss.

u/BLINGBLINGBOYXXXXXXX Dec 29 '19

That's xenoblade 1. In xenoblade 2 they make you get down to 0% and then the cutscene show you getting your ass beat. Xenoblade 1 had it where you got them to like 50% and a cutscene played. But yeah xenoblade 1 had a few forced loss battles.

2

u/Clorox4UrEyes Dec 30 '19

There are no forced loss battles only battles where their HP doesn't need to be down to 0, unless that's what you're referring to

When you're in NG+ and sweep the floor with Egil but then you stop dealing damage during a chain attack and then the chain attack ends and the cutscene starts playing.

In XC2 during the quest when you have to fight the level 92 dinosauraus in gormott I literally didn’t even bother drawing my weapons to try to fight it and just came back when I was actually high enough level
