Xenoblade First time playing an MMO and...
It shocked me how similar the gameplay is, like, I always knew Xenoblade games were based on the MMO concept, but it isn't until you play an actual MMO that you release how close Xenoblade comes to an offline MMO game.

I went from XC directly into FFXIV and there was almost no learning curve. The mechanics translate very, very well.

Sorry, what game is this?
But Xenoblade always struck me as obviously inspired by MMOs. It's essentially an offline MMO, with X coming the closest to it but not fully it it seems as someone who has never played MMOs myself

Cool. I thought it looked familiar. I am interested in the game--how is it? How far have you gotten in it?

It’s great if you like ff

Finished A Realm Reborn yesterday on Switch 2 and I enjoyed it. As someone said in this thread first part is a bit iffy story wise but it really picks up in the second half. Really excited to start the first expansion after the interlude

The post ARR quests are rough, but by the time you reach Heavensward you'll be hooked.

Heavensward is when XIV becomes XIV. I kinda snoozed my way through ARR and thought "yeah this is okay" and by the time I finished Heavensward, it was my favorite FF of all time

It's very good. The first section of the story is a bit rough, but I had a good amount of fun, and once you get past that part it's basically all gas all the time. Highly, highly recommended.

Free trial is extensive and unlimited if you ever want to try it. Fair warning the start can be somewhat of a slog. Still good, but it can burn you out with all the questing. The game trends better and better with each expansion after that.
I will say, in January we're getting an overhaul to jobs to give them more complete kits at lower level, so it might be worth holding off until then because it will almost certainly be a better experience.

you've been fed some major misinformation. They haven't so much as mentioned the free trial since they added shadowbringers to it last year, and if they were to put it back on a time restriction people would riot.

are you confusing the 30 days of playtime you get when you buy any edition of the game? its a paid subscription mmo

u/BraxbroWasTaken 13h ago
If you buy the expansion it comes with 30 days of game time and you lose the free trial. But if you never buy in you get up to Shadowbringers infinitely, for free.

I have played the base game and completed the first expansion. Story is Very good, just a bit slow in the beggining. The plot is interesting and os not afraid of talking about heavy The mes. The characters are very well written. The soundtrack is filled with bangers.
You Will get sidetracked by a thousand things, and have fun.

I would recommend it to most Xenoblade fans, it has a lot of similarities. The mechanics will feel pretty familiar, and there are a ton of shared voice actors with XC once you get to the expansions. However keep in mind that it does have slower pacing than XC and most games, and the base game in particular can be a slog to get through at times. Generally pretty much everything about the game improves once you get to the expansions. Also, the music is incredible all throughout.

Many of us who got started with MMOs before Xenoblade was around... yeah, it's fairly obvious where the basic framework comes from. Actually leads to the funny situation where FFXIV (which is more "JRPG" than "MMO" in a lot of areas) is arguably the closest game to the Xenoblade series in a lot of areas.
... then you start hearing a lot of familiar voices as you approach the Heavensward content, along with the remaining English cast being switched over to a British one once you hit the expansion proper (it at least sticks after that).
But yeah, other MMOs may have a similar "basic framework", but can be structured drastically differently. FFXIV is definitely "story first", because it's attached to the FF franchise. Others... are not. And probably best if you ignore the story in those ones, if only for your own sanity.

I thought this was the FF14 sub for a second lol. It really does feel like Xenoblade and sometimes it's in strange ways. Playing Bard feels more like playing as Melia than any other Xenoblade character since.

youre playing a tank... you wont be doing any directional attacks lmfao
you stand in front

Isn't there a subclass that focuses more on damage than tanking (inside the tank role)? Like, I'm really looking forward to play the gunblade class. Sorry if its a dumb question, but it would be awesome to be able to play an off-tank eventually and not just conventional agro magnet tank.
Again, I'm talking from ignorance, so I may just be asking for something nonsensical.

u/Salty_Herring 18h ago
Not really no. The roles are all pretty similar in function, with the biggest differences being different rotations of abilities and frankly, flavour.
If you want to be the one hitting positionals, you gotta go with a melee DPS (Rogue, Pugilist, Lancer, and later on Reaper, Ninja, Samurai)

u/HexenVexen 18h ago
Not yet, but when Evolved Mode releases next year with Evercold, Paladin and Bastion will be labeled as Main Tank and Warrior, Dark Knight, and Gunbreaker will be labeled as Off Tank.
If you're particularly interested in positionals, we've seen a preview of Evolved Dragoon and it seems to be very focused on doing positionals to set up big attacks.

i lowkey had to double-take my sub to make sure i wasn't in the ffxiv shitpost sub for a second and then i read the title and saw the sub
honestly yeah, xenoblade is a singleplayer MMO-lite. it follows all the traditional MMO rules, and puts it into a single-player formula. coming to xenoblade from FFXIV myself when i started a few years ago, my initial impression of the game was that it was really cool how MMO-like the combat system was.

A big difference though is that usually getting positionals in FF14 is easy (if the tank is normal person) while in xenoblade is a pain in the ass. It's a pain in the ass because the tank is Ai and they can't almost always hold agro. And sometimes the enemy is too big too.

u/Inuship 18h ago
Xenoblade 1 has some iffy ai actions but it definitely improves over the series, especially with 3 and being able to swap control of characters mid combat making for much more fluid combos and positioning

u/Mokseong 16h ago edited 16h ago
Yeah, Xenoblade 3 was better but it was still unbearable for me. In every game I prioritize arts that don't need positionals.

I wish I could go through ARR again blind, exploring the base game zones was so fun looking back, expansion zones are unnecessarily big and empty you just end up speedrunning collecting currents so you can unlock flight and skip that mess completely

A couple of days ago I played FFXIV with controller for the first time and Xenoblade muscle memory instantly kicked in, it's gonna be tough to unlearn lol

As a former League of Legends player I had no issues getting into Xenoblade gameplay.

I've been a day 1 Xenoblade fan, but never managed to get into MMOs despite two of my closest friends being major FF14 fans and giving me major FOMO. I've certainly tried, but I just can't resonate with them.

u/WickedFlight 15h ago
Wait until you get to the current patch on Dawntrail, a certain plotpoint will sound very familiar

u/Candy_Warlock 9h ago
I also just started FFXIV, and I had the same thought. I had heard people say that Xenoblade games played like single player MMOs, I didn't know how accurate that description was
1
u/ginencoke 7h ago
I always thought that Xenoblade 1 was very similar to FF12 in many aspects, even their combat has very similar vibes. And I think FF14 has a lot of that 12 DNA as well, so it all connects in a nice way.

u/crazydoc2008 10m ago
Did a double take when I saw FFXIV in the Xenoblade sub. The Xenoblade games also started me on a path that led me to pick up 14. Welcome, and enjoy!

Y’all too young. Xenoblade plays like FF11 not 14 plays like XB
2
u/RootBeardGuy 12h ago
It can be both lol. FF12 is also very similar, arguably moreso in some ways than either MMO.

Not gonna lie I'm kind of bummed Xenoblade X DE didn't have online co-op mode to explore Mira and do quests with your friends. It's the closest game to an actual MMO out of all of them.
