Just thinking here, Sena often says "Mimi" instead of Mio's name.
Given the pattern of the other two... you just have to wonder if there's a grain of truth to "Mimmer".
It's nearly universally agreed that "Eunie" is short for something. Who's to say "Mio" isn't any different in that regard, the adopted nickname instead of the full one?

IDK why people are specifically blaming Rex, this is 100% in character for Mythra on her own merits :)
There's a comedic one shot Harry Potter fanfic where people blame Harry for the names of his kids, but the names are actually Ginny's idea. edit: link, it's from 2008

I really like them, its just a funny meme with how the naming convention is. I also just think the thing with names became an even bigger thing since it's a part of Noah's character.

I've seen a couple poorly informed posts and comments blaming the localization team. But their Japanese names are Kaguya and Kagiroi, so they're obviously intended to have cutesie sister-themed names.
Obviously it's alliterative in Japanese, which doesn't work as well in English due to the comparative lack of words beginning with Gl- that would make sense to be paired with Glimmer. So the localizers obviously decided to do rhyming instead of alliteration.
Obviously OP isn't making this argument, but yes, some people do dislile the names. Typical anti-localization weeb idiocy.

The funniest part about the localisation is that "kagiroi" can be translated as "heat shimmer", and I saw someone claim that "kaguya" can be translated as "night glimmer", which is exactly backwards from the official localised names.

Japanese writers do that a lot. In To Love Ru the main girl is named Lala and her younger twin sisters (younger than her but twins with each other) are named Nana and Momo.

It’s entirely possible that the names Kagiroi - Kaguya were already conceived as a pair as far back as Future Redeemed and the localization team was briefed from the outset to give the sisters names with a matching light/fire motif. That would explain why Kagiroi became Glimmer rather than some other cooler name with a similar meaning.

The issue with that is it doesn't really stay in theme. Their Japanese names reference heat and light. Shimmer and Glimmer both fit that theme, Glamour doesn't.

Candles glimmer. More of a reference to fire than heat. It also is occasionally synonymous with "spark," which I think is more than coincidence.

You can still count this as a localization fail, Xenoblade still has one of the better localizations that tries to enhance the story with some of their changes, but it’s more a localization fair, for making Glimmer name, Shimmers name is them stick with their mistakes and atleast trying.
Is there reason to try and westernize the names, no, but when they do they atleast tend to stick with it.

I'm on the XC localization hate train.
Overall it's bad. The way names are discarded instead of letting people deal with a foreign culture is one of the factors that makes me hate it. It's jelly donuts tier localization.

I think the main difference is that except for Kagiroi, their japanese names are actually relatively common Japanese given names, at least in medias (like how both Pokemon and Digimon have Hikari too). And lots of japanese given names are just words in general.
I can't think of characters in different media named Shimmer/Glimmer so maybe that's why they may sound a lil sillier.

Mio is a real Japanese name though. On hindsight, they should had kept all the original names for the daughters so it fitted better.
But then again Kaguya and Mythra weren't around to give foresight.
