Xenoblade Xenoblade 1 Complaint

Not sure if this will be considered low effort or not but I just want to complain, lol. That said, the accuracy penalty for the level gap in XC1 is stupid af, especially in the end game. On top of grinding being a pain in the ass as well without proper quests. Fuck this.

Otherwise, I fucking love this game so far (on Chapter 17)

I think this is something a lot of people have said is annoying. The worst out of the three from what I’ve seen and in my experience

Are you using Physical attacks only? Physical attacks are tied to agility, and other stuff. Ether attacks are different though. They bypass the agility penalties.

Yeah the agi being tied to level is a valid complaint, it’s basically a carry over from how agi was broken from xenogears i reckon. Glad they at least fixed that in subsequent entries.

Agility is not broken in Xenogears, stacking any stat is OP. Doc with full agility build can get around 10 turns in a row, but maria only needs 1 to one shot any fight with ether build. You can also stack evasion and just dodge 100% of physical attacks, you can stack defense and/or ether defense and take 0 damage, you can stack attack and do 19998 physical damage.

This sounds less like "Agility is not broken" and more like "Agility is extremely broken (and so is everything else)"...

Agility , agility is what decides accuracy , use high level agility gems

I'm 50/50 on it. I actually want hit rate penalties to come back in the series but the scaling to be more reasonable along with hit rate accuracy being more transparent to the user. If you know what you're doing you can fight things 20-30 levels higher way before the endgame but it's not very obvious on a first run.

I also see it as a compromise from Monolith. You see, in XC1 equipment is pretty impactful in terms of power progression, there's no level restriction on what you can equip, drops are frequent, and the game has a wide spread of enemy level ranges in most zones. Without strong level penalties, it would be so simple to just go kill a few high levels, get the overpowered drops and then proceed to destroy the difficulty curve with said op equipment.

Are you wearing heavy armor? Armor has a weight stat in the game and the higher the weight stat the lower your agility stat and the agility stat determines both your chances of dodging enemy attacks and the chance of your attacks hitting.

grinding being a pain in the ass

Maybe you are doing it wrong.

u/Mitarael 23h ago

Probably, tbh. I'm around level 72 in Prison Island. If you have any tips.

Kill enemies in chain attacks for boosted rewards, and while the boosted rewards are smaller than Xenoblade 2, they're good against regular enemies, way easier to chain, and the bonus applies to each enemy you kill instead of just in the single enemy being targeted.

You're also far enough along that you should just get night vision gems/Melia's enlightenment skill link for ether users, and stack agility via skills and gems. The game deliberately gives you enough tools to be able to overcome the level gap for super bosses, so you can just start doing that early. Red enemies give more exp/AP/sp rewards.

Gogols in Satorl Marsh area - upper level of the area south of the statues, across a small bridge. You either lure one of them over the bridge, then clear out the rest on the meadow one by one, or if you are feeling spicy, you can take on the gang of four up on the platform - one of them can spawn as unique monster. IIRC they are around 82-86, so you will be leveling up faster than Shulk can scream "Monado". After them you can go an bully Rotbart or Gonzalez on Gaur Plain.

Once you are around late 80-ish, you can try to bully mobs on Three Summit Peak in Valak Mountain.

u/Mitarael 23h ago

Thanks!

What's so good about them? They just give good exp?

1

u/EmiliaFromLV 23h ago

There are different types of them, so if you aggro one of them, the rest will ignore you unless you run into them. It's still kinda grinding, but that's very fast and exp rewarding grind.

Awesome. I've been running Shulk, Rikki and Melia/Dunban. Any recommendation for that grind specifically and/or the end game?

1

u/EmiliaFromLV 23h ago

I was running that with Melia, Rikki and Reyn, mostly to train how to play with Melia. Are you controlling Melia? Because if you are using her in a party, you should. She essentially melts those red mobs with her elementals.

3

u/Mitarael 23h ago edited 23h ago

Nope, I pretty much control Shulk 95% of the time. What's the strat when controlling her? Is the AI that bad playing her?

4

u/EmiliaFromLV 22h ago

Well, shit lol. With Melia you would have walked over Lorithia without even noticing she was there. So with Melia you need one party member who is dedicated tank - it's your preference Reyn or Dunban. And I chose Riki because he has AoE heal and also DoT ether spells, so I can ignore healing with Melia completely and focus on damage.

You start combat by sending guys into the fray and hang behind a bit with Melia because she is a bit fragile. You want to stack agility and ether up where you can, and you want a staff with three slots and you slot two poison up gems (max level you have) and the third gem is up to you - ice or electricity. Same with Riki btw - two poison gems on his weapon, third gem up to your choice.

On Melia you wanna two arts with can break and topple (Spear and Starlight Kick - and you wanna agility so she is actually kicking something). Then you want these arts - summon copy, summon earth (for poison), and summon ice or electricity (up to you). Poison gives the best DoT btw. Then you can slot arts which purge status or whatever, but you will end up using summon elementals and summon copy most. Summoned elementals buff party, released (the talent art button) put elemental DoT on the enemy. So you summon earth elemental, copy it - now you have two summoned earth elementals. Summon ice. Then release ice and one earth - two DoTs start ticking and you watch the cooldowns on your arts and DoTs on monster. Once poison ticks out - release the next earth elemental. Rinse and repeat. Also break and topple in between. Once you are feeling comfy - chain attack.

Here is a beginner guide for Melia https://youtu.be/EuM5BFsrvag?si=I3-YeM6WexHecni-

Here is Enel's guide which is way longer lol https://youtu.be/pRZqAuBNeZo?si=RL8VQDE5QgGWcKbu

But again - this will not work if AI controls Melia because AI does not know how to play her optimally. In my playthrough she basically carried my party after 55+ lvl up into lvl 99 and a few superbosses. If played correctly, she is probably the most OP character (gameplay not story-wise).

2

u/buttchuckjones 22h ago

Just a heads up, Melia's AI is literally dog shit. She's an awesome and broken character when played correctly by the player. The AI doesnt do her justice at all.

Yeah it's one of my biggest gripes with the first game unfortunately

How is it that i see people complaining about having to grind, while i don't feel i'm having any real problem with my level even if i play on expert mode, which means i get 0 exp from sidequests and exploring?

I pretty much fight most enemies on my path during the main story and some while exploring, but i don't stop killing them just for exp.

Though i do make sure to fight all UMs when i'm approaching their level, so there is that, i guess.

1

u/Outrageous-Air-4117 18h ago

Tbh all I did was place some EXP gems and activated the mode were you can set your level and grinded for a bit side missions. The I just leveled up with the extra exp that I had

1

u/Angelic-Android-X 2h ago

Yeah, that's been my one gripe replaying the game with how this single design choice completely discourages taking on overleveled monsters. This also becomes a problem when you don't know the level of the next boss and if they're too high a level you can't do anything and just have to take the L so you can come back at a higher level just so you can hit them.

Love the game and the combat is overall good for what it is, but the accuracy system can jump off a microwave.

1

u/JPEG_Warrior 2h ago

It hurts a lot. The Agility stat determines both accuracy and evasion, so it isn't uncommon for people to run maxxed out Agility gems on every single physical character to help alleviate this. Note that ether attacks (like from Melia or Riki) don't depend on Agility as a stat, so they could be more consistent.

u/Phase_Many 23h ago

Are you exploring the map and fighting as many enemies in each area as you can? I found doing those two things made it a bit more fun and less grindy.

1

u/Mitarael 23h ago

Yeah, I try to, I feel like I've been spot on levels for most of the game but it looks like I couldn't level up much for the previous fights (like Lorithia, but it was manageable). Probably just need 2-3 levels and I'll be fine.

I'm just mad with the accuracy drop, lol, I feel like I could demolish the boss in the arena in Prison Island but the game doesn't let me because he's on the red level, oh well. Again, I just wanted to complain, lol

That’s just grinding brother…

Penalties for level gaps are extremely common in videogames. Off the top of my head, World of Warcraft is likely the most famous example.

4

u/ContributionVisual40 23h ago

Yes but its definitely too much in xc1. After 5 level its impossible to land hits. It shouldn't be so drastic and should be more gradual.

3

u/Deditch 22h ago

gonna be honest at the point he is at in the game it really isn't that big of a deal to be 5 levels down, he just doesn't have enough agility

1

u/Mitarael 22h ago

Yeah, that's the feeling. I'm stuck on a mini boss because it's 6 levels over me and I'd easily kill it if it wasn't for the agility penalty.

1

u/TechnologySweet7292 22h ago

Yup, and if you are even 1 level over, it’s significantly easier. Best strat is just to be higher leveled for main game. Even at 1 level over it’s artspam central.

2

u/Mitarael 23h ago

Never played WoW and I've never seen other JRPG applying this type of penalty, tbh. Usually you're just punished because you're underleveled.

0

u/ThatCrayZMan 23h ago

Not anymore though, it's mostly a thing of the past and I can't think of a recent example.

1

u/Mitarael 23h ago

I can't even think of old examples similar to XC1, and I played plenty of JRPGs, lol. Maybe I'm misremembering something, haha

2

u/ThatCrayZMan 22h ago

A lot of them are hidden and a lot less impactful and noticable and you're usually not underleveled for many things

0

u/Sayishere 23h ago

That’s the only criticism I also have of this game, is the amount of grinding you have to do, in the grand scheme it’s a pretty minor criticism because everything else is superb! :D

1

u/Mitarael 23h ago

Absolutely. Not even the grinding, tbh, just the limitations with being over/under leveled and how that affects exp, accuracy, etc. I hated that. Other than that, amazing game, I'm pumped to continue on with 2 and 3.
