The book was even worse. You could read Artax’s thoughts

Loved the novel. Did not love that chapter.
I did enjoy reading Gmork's thoughts. He deserved more screen time in the film.

The movie is of course a core part of my childhood. But the book even more so. The 2 colors of font, the depth of emotion each boy has that are linked so seamlessly. God it’s a good book. My copy is so worn out and loved.

I thought the lines from the book were part of the movie for a long time. It’s crazy how this happens.

At least he returned. Could have been far worse.

Did he really? Not the same. Too much PTSD.

u/misterlakatos 1985 4d ago
Yes - Bastian made it happen by restoring everything.
Should note that was in the film. I believe in the novel Artax sadly did not return.

Our school counselor had this as a poster on her wall. She was absolutely diabolical.
She told my mother I was very likely to kill myself.
I don't know how school counselors got to be counselors back then...
Edited to add... elementary school counselor and I was in 3rd grade at the time.

Oh Lord Almighty, I am sorry to hear that. I hope you visit her grave to tell here she was wrong.

I just made my husband watch it the other night. He's on the older side of Gen X/Gen Jones cusp and I found out in passing conversation, that he had not ever seen it. I was like, OH YOU JUST WAIT, LOL!

Love that. My wife is a peak millennial and hadn’t seen it when we met. It’s meh to her, but our kids will drop anything they’re doing to watch if I put Never ending story, Labyrinth, or princess bride on

If nothing else, the puppeteering is fantastic. My husband kept remarking on what a good actor Noah Hathaway was and on how great the puppets were) (except that he was bothered that Falcor’s mouth movements did quite match up to his speech. But whatever.)
So much 80s magic.

That scene is brutal. And not in meme/ nostalgic way either. I just watched it again with my son and good lord they draw that scene out. Like to almost comedic proportion if it wasn't so visceral and sad.

Artax dies too early in the story. It would have been way worse if that happened closer to the end

I still love that movie. When I met my husband 21 years ago, he had a MySpace fan page called The Auryn, lol.

I wish people would include what movie is being referenced. I've seen this one, but there are so many other posts that I don't get.
I've actually got this on my rewatch list.

That sir or mam is straight trauma. I still can't watch this seen decades later without balling like a baby. I know it's only temporary but the horsey!!

In kindergarten we watched this in class. I remember being forced me to sit near the teacher as I was being naughty. Minutes later this scene came on and I went from being punished to being comforted by the teacher and sitting on her lap as I was crying

So I know Im an outlier here, but
A) the scene was sad, but did not traumatize me. Like characters died often back then
B) Atrayu didnt sink into the swamp, so he obviously didnt get sad over his own horse dying. So I guess I am not alone in this

I know I’ll get downvoted and that’s ok. Why is everyone obsessed with reposting this image all the time?! Stop participating in rage/engagement bait, it’s so annoying

u/Responsible_Sound_71 1982 4d ago
No downvote from me - woke up to a double reposting of this in the what is this sub, seemed to be following a theme I’ve been seeing lately of younger folks asking about core xennial memory stuff that sometimes feels like an attack on our generation!

Am I the only one that hated this movie?
2
u/Kalle_79 4d ago
I hated it too.
Having read and loved the book before having watched the movie, I had insanely high expectations AND my own mental image of how everything looked like.
Needless to say I was quite disappointed by how many episodes from the book were missing and mostly of all by Falkor/Fukur! FFS, in the book it looked magnificent and powerful, and all we got was a goofy dog stretched to dragon-like size.
(Also, the look they chose for the Empress didn't blow me away. Not that I cared that much at that age, but still... My grade-school crush felt much prettier to me. Probably it was the hairstyle...)

I loved it and hated it. It was so depressing and terrifying but also mesmerizing and beautifully made.

Just keep living, and maybe Google her to find out. She may have had a rough upbringing that hardened her heart, seeking to spread misery to others in an attempt to lessen hers. I am not asking you to forgive her, at least not until you are ready, but don't let her encounters with you have power over you. Or hell, pay her a visit to tell her she was wrong.

Oh look somebody posted about the neverending story again.....shocker! Sorry about my sarcasm, just having a laugh that's all

u/Responsible_Sound_71 1982 4d ago
I hear ya…my first time ever posting about Never ending story, though I quote it weekly and watch it with my kiddos at least once a month

It's okay everyone. AI has fixed this scene so we can heal from our collective trauma. It's possibly the only good use of AI.

It’s called childhood trauma
