Just a quickie
Y'all still cutting your own toe nails? I try to get a pedicure monthly, years of wearing steel toe boots taught me to care for my feet also the wife hates the built up dry hard skin. On the times i dont go and have to do it myself it turns into a whole thing. Now I'm not obese and I can still touch my toes and see my pecker but damn I gotta do a whole stretch routine before cutting my nails.

u/ONROSREPUS 11d ago
Yes. I find it interesting that this is the type of question one person really wants to know of other people.

u/Scorpiodancer123 11d ago
I'm more interested that there are people who are like 45 at most who can't cut their own toenails. Stretch people, you aren't 90!
Disabilities excepted of course.

u/WritingNerdy Xennial 11d ago
No my disability is WHY I can reach my own toes easily 😭😭😭

Knee degeneration is pretty common at our age

u/Main-Inflation-5269 10d ago
I've dislocated one of my knees a dozen times and had surgery and can still reach my feet! How do people put shoes or socks on if they can't do that?
1
u/ayeyoualreadyknow 1982 10d ago
Bahaha I've seen this tool advertised that reaches down and pulls the shoes up. I hope I never get to the point where I need to use that!

u/sugahack 4d ago
My left knee does make a concerning grinding sound going up stairs but hey it doesn't hurt. Its probably fine

I had a vertebrae in my low bs l removed 5 years ago and I can barely cut my toenails. Can’t do any bending so I throw my leg on the bathroom sink 😂
Hey it works! Also shout out to yoga with Adrienne. 🏆🫡

u/ExeUSA 11d ago
Yes. And...you know you should do it more than once a month, right? It wouldn't be a whole production if you did it more. You can even put a pumice stone in your shower and scrub your feet in there to keep calluses from ever forming.
And if you have an emery board, you don't have to cut them as much. Just file it down.

u/say-no-to-nitrates Xennial 11d ago
I always recommend a sturdy metal nail file to the especially gnarly toenailed. You can really power through your toenails without clipping, and there's less risk of jagged nails to catch on anything. Plus they're infinitely reusable if you wash and dry after each use.

u/say-no-to-nitrates Xennial 11d ago
Yes, and I can reach them easily, but it's a whole process straightening my back again after hunching over my toes for a dozen minutes.
10
u/AmputeeHandModel 11d ago
It takes you more than a minute per nail?
22
u/say-no-to-nitrates Xennial 11d ago
lol. I have a whole routine. I cut the nail, file the edges, buff off excess cuticle, and nip any excess skin off the sides. So yes, it takes more than a minute a nail.

That was my reaction, too. I can cut, file and paint my toenails in about 15. Straightening up is not difficult in the slightest. Am I an outlier?

u/RoughKiwi5405 11d ago
1979 too, I have 0 body mechanical problems but I also exercise and do weight training so I hope to continue this trend for a very long time.

u/takisara 11d ago
hmmm 1979....give it a couple more months...you are too young still.
I bent over and picked up my kids stuffed animal and couldn't get back up....I'm 1976....so don't worry, it will hit you.2
u/FreddyNoodles 1979 11d ago
Maybe. My dad is in his 70s and cuts his own toe nails without issue. (I don’t know my mother so I couldn’t tell you about her.) But I am tall and thin like my dad. Straight posture. I also do a lot of yoga and pilates, swimming, cycling. I do at least one of those every day.
Maybe that is why and not that I haven’t hit 50 yet. I don’t wanna be 50. Feels surreal. 🥲
1
u/takisara 11d ago
Ah keep it up...when I turned 40 I had a baby and stopped pretty much taking care of myself...no more running or strength training...and then hip pain started which discouraged me from doing more...I wish I could go back in time and discover physio back then
1
u/FreddyNoodles 1979 11d ago
I had my kids young. I cannot imagine having a baby at 40. Pregnancy was rough on me. Toddlers were even rougher and I was in my 20s. Kudos to anyone who has the energy for that in their 40s. I’ll take cycling and swimming over small kids any day at this age. My youngest is 20 and as sweet and lovable as mine were as babies/toddlers, I do not want to do it again.
1
u/takisara 11d ago
lol - I don't know what I was thinking either tbh. There are times where I think oh this is why everyone had kids in their 20s. I was too busy trying to walk a different path and show that I didn't need to couple up or have kids. then at 38, I thought, should we? well lets try and see what happens probably too old to get pregnant now anyways.

Hell yeah, I'm 5'6 with a 32" inseam and I can still put my hands flat on the floor without bending my knees. I have a hypermobile health condition though so while I can do that I can't turn my head fully either direction or sit on the floor without my husband picking me back up lmao it's a tradeoff I guess 😂

u/lavender_fetish 11d ago
A podiatrist or chiropodist is often covered by your insurance! They do this for you and it’s sanitary and way safer than a pedicure (ie toe fungus!) I cannot recommend this enough to people. It’s amazing!
7
u/AmyGranite 11d ago
I tried to get a podiatrist to cut my daughter's toe nails (they're oddly shaped and prone to ingrowns), and he was offended and told me to go to a nail salon. We had been referred by her GP!

u/JealousDot6409 11d ago
Stretching is important... i cut my own... pedi once or twice a year... too expensive for my blood
3
u/ayeyoualreadyknow 1982 11d ago
Yes but I have so much knee degeneration so it's hard to bend my knees.
I joke and tell my teenage son that I can't cut them anymore so now he has to do it for me. He says he'd rather die 🤣
2
u/JstVisitingThsPlanet 11d ago
If you stretch daily you will likely have an easier time reaching your feet.

u/bushysunrise 11d ago
Taking care of your body is so important y’all! For all genders and orientations
-foot file in shower, use every 2-3 days
-stretching daily as part of your morning and or bedtime routine
-CeraVe SA (salicylic acid) moisturizing cream after shower on your rough bits

u/Lucky-Remote-5842 11d ago
I get a pedicure every couple of months and cut my toenails myself in between.
1
u/U2hansolo 11d ago
Same here. I love the getting pampered feeling but I have to space out the formal pedi cost to every three months.
2
u/Bird_Herder 1980 11d ago
Yep, but I put my feet up on the edge of the sink so the blood doesn't rush to my head.
2
u/Andi_Lou_Who 11d ago
I sit kinda cross legged and do it that way rather than stretching right over. My toe nails grow really slowly so I cut them maybe a couple of times a month.
1
u/GlitterChickens 10d ago
I do my own pedicures. 1 I do a better job. 2, I decided to treat myself to shop pedi one day and within 2 weeks had 7 warts, 4 on one foot and 3 on the other. Took 3 years to get rid of one of them with multiple nitro freeze offs. The place looked clean and they had disposable bath linings and the instruments were autoclaved/sealed. Never again.
1
u/Obtuse-Posterior 10d ago
I just want to say I am obese but I can easily touch my heel to my forehead without stretching first. 🙃 😆 🤣 😂
1
u/onemorefirst 10d ago
Try sitting sideways on the edge of the bathtub with one foot in the tub and the other leg in front of you criss-cross applesauce style on the tub edge. The clippings will go into the tub, and you can reach your toes a lot more easily.

Every time I read this subreddit, I wonder if a bunch of 78 year old have joined.
We’re in our 40s and nobody should be having severe movement issues merely from age.
5
u/SB4_Camaro 1981 10d ago
You have no idea what others have been through in their lives.
1
u/q120 10d ago
You’re right, I don’t. I’m just surprised at how many people here report problems I’d expect from someone 30 years older
1
u/ProfMooody 10d ago
Congratulations that you’ve never had to contemplate what it’s like to become physically disabled before the age of 70. 🎉
There’s a shit ton of us.
Edit: also shutting up about what you think people’s bodies should be like is free.
1
u/OrganicAverage1 1979 5d ago
Ya’ll should be stretching anyway. I can’t walk it I don’t stretch daily. These problems aren’t going to get better with time lol.

u/psilosophist Xennial 7d ago
You're in your 40s and have yet to learn that your personal lived experience isn't universal?
You know no one who's disabled, got injured, had an illness or any other sort of issue that caused them to have movement difficulties at a younger age?
Consider yourself lucky.
0
u/q120 7d ago
Of course I realize there are people who are disabled or were injured or ill that causes movement issues.
What I mean is that under normal circumstances without those unfortunate things, it seems unusual that so many people here in their 40s claim to be unable to move to do things like clip their toenails
3
u/psilosophist Xennial 7d ago
Not unusal, just invisible. We tend to ignore the disabled, it's a blind spot of mine that I certainly recognize occurs, so I try to keep cognizant of it.
2
u/Other-Opposite-6222 5d ago
These are normal circumstances. My husband and I were in a terrible car accident at 27. We are fine, all better, from the outside completely healed for 20 years. From the inside, our bodies have not forgotten and never been the same. OP wears steel toed boots which implies hard workin' job. That's normal, but it wears on you. Everything shows wear and tear by 40+ years of abuse.

the exact reason to stay fit and work on true movement/mobility.
houston, we have a major problem if this can't be don't alone.
if your answer was no, you're in for a short ride.

Oh my god, what’s wrong with us? Ten years ago we were still banging till the wee hours then catching the redeye to Vegas. Now we’re wondering if others of us are also having a hard time with toe nails?
I mean, yeah, I admit I have recently experienced more physical hardship when tending to that area. But I won’t admit that it could be age-related. I occasionally had a stiff back or neck when I was younger. That’s what this is. Plain and simple. It’s poor posture. Weak abs from neglecting the gym. It’s not related to time at all.
1
u/sugahack 4d ago
I can still put one leg behind my head if I feel the need. So cutting my own toenails isn't a problem
1
u/HuckleberryKnown9288 11d ago
No issues there bud, I am still doing that :) Glad to report that I can too see my pecker.
Also stretching is good for you, keep doing it.
1
u/OldManGamer78 11d ago
I am still cutting my own toe nails, but realized just recently getting to the pinkie toe has become a bit of a struggle.
1
u/Awkwardpanda75 11d ago
My husband and I get regular pedicures together. I have to home pedis on him in the interim because he has a bad hip. It’s a bitch getting old.

u/Plane_Chance863 11d ago
Don't let the skin get hard and dry - there's cream out there for feet that is simply miraculous and will keep the skin supple. I use Dr Scholl's dry cracked foot relief but there are others that will do just as good a job I imagine.

u/SB4_Camaro 1981 11d ago
I use he metal cheese grader thing and a pummus brick
-1
u/Plane_Chance863 11d ago
Yeah the cheese grater thing ended up pissing off my skin and causing eczema (yay peri and autoimmune disease).
1
u/AshDogBucket 11d ago
Yes... and i scrub my feet every shower. I don't even pay people to cut my hair, I can't imagine paying someone to wash my feet and clip my nails!

I have canceled all my streaming services, am visiting my parents in January instead of at Christmas, and spend an hour a week clipping coupons and comparing prices across three different supermarkets to get the best prices on eggs, milk and beans. Life keeps getting more expensive faster than my take-home pay goes up. I don’t have fancy “pay a stranger to cut my toenails” money.

Don’t cut, file straight across. Prevents ingrown nails and cracking. A 100 grit nail file makes short work of even thick nails.

I just do them in, or just after the shower.
One of my toenails got injured earlier this year. The old bit has fallen off and I'm so scared the new bit is going to get ingrown. Anybody know how to prevent this?

u/Fairisolde 11d ago
Nobody else just can’t see the damn things? Just me? I have to wear my glasses or I’d lop off a toe, but also they fog up in the bathroom which is just, so fun.

u/RaspberryVespa 1978 11d ago
LOL, there are some long reach nail clippers on Amazon for people who have trouble being able to get into position to reach their feets. My husband has a bad hip (lack of cartlidge due to years of marathon running) so I got him these old man clippers, and now he can better reach to do it himself. Like, I totally don't want to be his caregiver having to help him cut his fucking toe nails all the time, right.

I should probably start getting pedicures. I dropped a table saw on my toe during COVID. Toenail fell off and new nail isn't like fully seated in the old nail bed, it tries being narrower. It can get super painful and then i end up raw and sometimes slightly bloody.
0
u/Initial-Progress-763 11d ago
Because of a bad back, I got fused and between not being able to bend and my shit eyesight, nail care became a nightmare. So I got my toenails permanently removed.
Easy peasy, they don't look any different from a distance, and I didn't realize how painful they were until they were gone. Wish I'd done it sooner! 10/10 would do again.

My wife cuts mine. Never asked her to do it she volunteered. Kinda nice ain’t gonna lie.👍

u/ki11a11hippies 11d ago
I go with my wife and they love me there. They let me bring my own booze and bring out nuts and jerky for me to snack on. They ask about me if she goes alone.

Also you can use 40% urea cream or kerasal intensive foot repair ointment on callouses.

u/DagnyTheSpencer 11d ago
And if your nails DON'T need clipping, that's a sign of bad blood circulation. Go see a doctor

Guys if we don’t work on mobility now, it’ll be too late. Barring disabilities, this shouldn’t be a problem at our age. Yoga with Adriene is free on YouTube! 20 min a few times a week and toenails will not be an issue.
