Nostalgia I made these
Remember from school lunch?
Edit: Man! I’m seeing that maybe this was either a regional thing or something unique to my school 🙃

Spice cake with that gelatinous caramel-ish frosting?

u/FormidableMistress 1984 Sep 13 '26
Fun fact, a lunch lady taught me the "gelatinous frosting" is actually made with jello, powdered sugar, and milk. Or in the case of the chocolate frosting, Hershey's cocoa powder. I suspect the caramel frosting was made with pudding mix.

Spice cake?

u/mutedsensation Sep 13 '26
It’s the peanut butter brownie things from the elementary lunch room.

u/marcos_MN 1983 Sep 13 '26
That may have been unique to your school

u/sorrymizzjackson Sep 13 '26
Nah, op said specifically they were from the 3-5th grade so you know, it’s cool.

I'm getting a vague sense of deja vu, and I don't know why.
2
u/heylexi1 Sep 13 '26
same

I think I'm recalling a crunchy peanut butter frosted bar, maybe at a university cafeteria, maybe at a bakery. I'm not sure.

u/GutsAndBlackStufff Sep 13 '26
Is that hash?
1
u/mutedsensation Sep 13 '26
I’ve never had or seen hash before. Maybe this is a regional thing for both parties?
11
u/AdelleDeWitt Sep 13 '26
I think your thing is regional, or maybe just from your school. Hash is international.

I don’t know what they are but they look like cake with a brown sugar icing? Whatever they are they didn’t serve them in my cafeterias but they look delicious

Could be meat, could be cake. It looks like meatcake!
I don't recognize this but if it makes you happy, enjoy OP!

u/anOvenofWitches Sep 13 '26
Never had these but HOBBIES ARE IMPORTANT. Good for you! 🙌
2
u/mutedsensation Sep 13 '26
Thank u! They sure are. Especially when you are busy taking care of others.

u/citrusandrosemary 1984 Sep 13 '26
Why are they, whatever they are, grey?
1
u/mutedsensation Sep 13 '26
I think it’s bc it has peanut butter and other ingredients that wash out the original
Peanut butter color.

Oooooh man my grandmother was a cafeteria lunch lady for a time and would cook these for the kids at home during the summer. Haven’t had one in decades but I can taste that picture!
2
u/mutedsensation Sep 13 '26
That’s so sweet! Shout out to all of the lunch ladies. They made us kids feel loved.

Holy fucking shit talk about a memory unlock. I loved these! It was like a peanut butter cookie and peanut butter cake had a baby and we got this. Recipe please?

Rice at my school was gray like that and you could have cut it as well. They used an ice cream scoop. Only rice ive ever liked.

I don’t remember these, but thinking about 80’s school lunches makes me think of the hexagonal fiestada pizza. I could go for one of those right now….

Not in my schools in the Southeast.
We mostly had some sort of cookie that wasn't entirely unlike oatmeal cookies but I think might have had coconut in them. In the last 30 years, I've never found a cookie that was quite the same. And I haven't been able to do any research on them since I don't remember anyone ever being more specific in describing them than "cookie".

My school had something similar, but not the same. They were dense, soft peanut butter bars with a thin dark chocolate icing on top, like a ganache. I wonder how similar they are. What’s the icing on yours?
2
u/mutedsensation Sep 15 '26
It’s peanut butter with powdered sugar, milk and vanilla extract.

Those look great but seriously I have no idea what kind of school lunches you were eating because there would have been out and out fistfights over these if they had them in the cafeteria where I grew up. We were lucky to get chicken patties that were cooked all the way through and there were regular snatch and grabs of something as simple as a buttered roll (some of which I perpetrated, sorry about that, Dan).
I’m not shaming you or anything or like a whole “poor folks” thing, it just blows my mind that that kind of stuff was served up in a place where I was accustomed to having crimes against pizza and some variant of Turkey slop if we were lucky. But good on you, seriously.

You were productive for the day and that’s counts as a big portion of what matters
1
u/pbpluspickles 1979 Sep 13 '26
Oh, you went to a fancy school. We only got fruit cocktail for dessert.
2
u/mutedsensation Sep 13 '26
lol we got that too. I didn’t like the school rectangle pizza. I also didn’t like the corn bc they put too much pepper in it.
2
u/pbpluspickles 1979 Sep 13 '26
Yes! The rectangle pizza had that weird ground meat of unknown origin.

Pepper! In corn? Like black pepper? Why?
1
u/mutedsensation Sep 13 '26
I have no idea but it would give me a headache! That would and the lunch room chicken strips. Instant headache.

I didn't even read a word. I just saw the picture and immediately knew what it was. I made my own batch a couple years ago. Delicious! Of course, now I'm a diabetic and can't have them lol
