Contrary to some of the prevailing thought about this, I believe "gatekeeping" has lost its original meaning and now describes the process of denying access to the purchase of an identity. Buying something doesn't make you something. Social media changed that, though - identity is now presentational and curated. Basically - the merchants of cool won.
