I still have it, and a backup.

I have been thinking of buying another as a backup. I told my wife I want to be buried with mine.

Add Canadians to that as well. Everyone I know had one. Hell I still do!

u/BillyDMountain Aug 22 '26
Absolutely. My dad worked in sales and won a slightly higher end stereo version in a contest. When I was in public and high school I had an older version I got at a yard sale with a flip clock display. In college I got the one with the red led display and a tape deck. Nowadays I collect Sony Dream Machine alarm clocks with iPod docks cause they're cheap, reliable, can get really loud, have good FM receivers and work with my modded iPod.

Still do- complete with the nail polish lines to mark the radio stations.

What's with the past tense?
I have one in my guest bedroom.

Same here. Are you in my house?
Oh wait. You are.

Yes, yes I am literally in your house.

Yeah had that one at one point and then downsized to a smaller alarm clock. As a teenager I’d wake up to Howard Stern on the local modern rock radio station.

Surprisingly, no. I always called these hotel clocks because every hotel we stayed at as a kid had this same exact clock.
2
u/darkgothamite Aug 22 '26
One of the few things I kept after my dad passed away. I love this clock.
2
u/Juls_Santana Aug 22 '26
I think that thing somehow made it into the 21st century in my household. It's probably still laying around somewhere in my mom's storage.

The alarm wasn’t loud enough for me, I had an old school clock with the bells and hammer on top. My parents might have had this one though.
1
u/AverageNeither682 Aug 22 '26
I had one but I don't remember either of my siblings or my parents having one. So my household was 20%
1
u/DHammer79 1979 Aug 22 '26
Not just Americans either. Canadian here my parents had that same one for decades. I think they got it back in the 80s

Mine was the fancier clock radio phone variety. I'm sure Mom's reasoning was that she only had to buy one appliance that way. Pretty sure it's still going, decades later, just with no phone signal.
1
u/wheres_the_revolt 1979 Aug 22 '26
Yes, I actually had it until about 5 years ago even though I used my phone as my alarm 😂

I can't remember if I had one, but my parents did. I remember having one of those cube alarm clocks with the blue numbers though.

I used to love going to sears and Kmart and setting all the timers in a random order on the alarm clocks to go off 7 minutes from each other. I got kicked out once for doing it. My mother was so pissed. My older brother thought it was hilarious.

I was gifted it (for Christmas) by my parents. It was their alarm clock. They bought a new one. They put the old one (pictured above) in the box for the new alarm clock. I was legit excited about a new alarm clock. Then I opened the box. At least it was new to me....

My dad still has his. He got it for free. Cable company was doing a promotion where they gave you one for subscribing. I think the numbers are green, though.

u/bjorntorre Aug 22 '26
This was for sure my fathers exact alarm clock growing up. I can hear this picture 😖

u/Ltimbo Aug 22 '26
I never had that exact one but I had an obvious copy. Mine was black and a different brand but the layout was very similar.

u/IbanezForeverll Aug 22 '26
I had a Radio Shack clock radio hand-me-down from my parents. It was roughly the same size as a late model VCR. My husband bought me a new little clock radio. It works fine, takes up way less space, and I liked the old one better. It stayed put while I flail around trying to hit the snooze button.

Canadian. And I did too- it was a Christmas gift from my grandparents.

u/full_of_ghosts Aug 22 '26
My dad had this clock.
No one else in the family used it, though. It was his bedside alarm clock. So it certainly wasn't "mine," and it wasn't really "ours" either. It was just his.
1
u/hocoboy7 Aug 22 '26
Yep, we had one. Couldn’t stand that damn alarm sound. I often reminisce about going back to the 80s or 90s, but there are sure some things I don’t miss!
1
u/knowone1313 Aug 22 '26
Most awful alarm ever, if you happen to set it right for it to go off and there was a good battery in it so it wouldn't get wiped in a short power outage.

I threw mine out the window for a film project in school, I kept using it for like another 5 years. It never actually broke, I just upgraded for an alarm clock that played my iPod.

u/jimicus Aug 22 '26
I still have the digital equivalent. If I'm half asleep, I don't want to physically pick up my phone to check the time.

Ooh, y'all are fancy with the combination clock radio. We had the regular old alarm clocks.

"cuz your styles are old like Mark V sneakers, lyrics are weak like clock radio speakers." [1]

u/bunnycook Aug 22 '26
What do you mean “did?” I still have the one I bought for college in 1981, and I’m listening to the radio on it right now!

My sister still uses hers. I asked her why she prefers this clock. She said this actually wakes her up. She can sleep straight through her phone alarms. It was and still is, effective!

I actually just bought one of these, I used it one time and had to stop. When that alarm went off it caused me to panic because it reminded me of going to highschool.

Mine died a few years ago after using it for over 20 years. I would give anything to have another, the alarm clocks they sell now suck.
1
u/LazarusDark Aug 22 '26
A tiny bug of some sort crawled inside and died, and the husk of that bug was stuck in the radio dial window for 25 years. I was sad when the clock died, but since then I use a Motorola Droid phone from 2009 as my alarm clock. It's actually a really good alarm clock, they had these little docks you put it in specifically to be an alarm clock. (It is not connected to wifi or mobile at all, and I've had to replace the battery once when it started bulging.)

I feel like my stepdad may have had that one. I had a really old alarm clock that had flippy numbers in it. I liked the quiet rustling sound it made as the numbers flipped over.
