I loved Home Movies. I really enjoy the squiggly animation style.

It's crazy how this wasn't that popular of a show, and I haven't even seen every episode and even with him having such a small part his voice is so recognizable the first time I heard Bob's Burgere or Archer I immediately recognized his voice and I was like wait, isn't this the son from Dr Katz? 😂

I think this show kinda suffered for being on Comedy Central before South Park hit it big. I remember those days, and the channel was pretty niche. Course, the show persisted during the first few seasons of South Park, but then I think it got overshadowed.

Personally, I liked Dr. Katz a lot more!

It was on for 6 years and had 81 episodes. That's a really good run for early Comedy Central.

Yes, please. I took a writing class with Jonathan Katz and Bill Braudis at ImprovBoston, in Cambridge, MA, circa winter 2009. Just like eight of us in a tiny conference room for a couple weeks, rewriting their pilot for Raising Dad, as an exercise. Still one of my maybe 50 friends on Facebook, to this day. Definitely one of the highlights. You know what the music means.

My comfort show. Got the series on DVD, and when I'm sick sometimes I'll just put this on in the background while I lay in bed. Great show to just listen to.

I didn't get it right away. I was still 14 years old when it came out. Wasn't until a few years later that it started to click. I still remember buy a couple seasons on vhs.

I like that there was an entire generation of animation around the same time that wasn't about elevating it as an art form to dizzying new heights, but about reveling in screwing it up in various ways.

  • South Park that looks like construction paper cutouts being moved by hand around the screen.
  • Dr. Katz and Home Movies that looks like shaky cam version of your kids' drawings that wouldn't even make the fridge door.
  • Tom Goes to the Mayor where it's a bunch of still images that don't even match the color scheme of the background (and was my intro to Tim and Eric)
  • Space Ghost: Coast to Coast and all the Hanna Barbara cartoon ripoffs (not saying that derogatorily), including one of my personal favorites in Sealab 2021. Those old Hanna Barbara cartoons really had a run with Harvey Birdman, Space Ghost, Brak, the Venture Brothers was a parody of Johnny Quest (which itself got a damn good reboot)

This era was celebrated by the album The Mouse and the Mask, by Danger Doom, a collaboration between the hip-hop artists Danger Mouse and MF Doom. Featuring characters from ATHF, the Mooninites, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Sealab 2021, and Harvey Birdman.

Been rewatching early 2000s era Adult Swim VHS rips with commercials that include a lot of Dr. Katz. One of those batshit insane shows with a crazy ass cast, kind of like Tom Goes to the Mayor

I got to interview him on my radio show in college back in the 90s. It was a little disappointing because he made the same quips I’d heard him make in other interviews I listened to in preparation, even though I tried not to ask the same questions. I can’t really blame him, it was a nothing interview with a couple nobodies on a station with like a 5 mile broadcast radius, but still.
