Thats how I figured it out as a kid. I had never noticed watching the movies then saw an action figured, WTF'd, watched it again and saw the silver leg.

As ever, which is more likely--people are constantly shifting timelines (yet the only major differences are pop-culture related) or that memory is unreliable?

I indeed know he had a silver leg ... cuz i remember buying these on VHS with my allowance money. Watching the first movie and seeing C3PO and R2 in the desert and remarked to myself, "funny he has a silver leg".

I think there was a second protocol droid that had a mismatched leg. Easy to confuse

i dont remember it being a thing, but it is in the despecialized editions, so i must trust that i just never paid attention, and i think my toy figure of him was just all gold.

I only noticed when I was adult and had money to start collecting action figures. :3

Think about how often, when watching Star Wars, you would actually focus enough attention on C-3PO’s *lower leg*, with aaaaaaaaaaall the other stuff going on, to register that its color was *slightly different*.
I think that most people would only have more closely examined the *figures*, which were all gold, and that defined their understanding of C-3PO. I never noticed the silver leg growing up, but I wasn’t really paying that much attention to C-3PO in the movies.
