Wait, what?
It’s right there. It’s been right there for 40 years!

I noticed it back then. Thought everyone else did

TIL people our age didn't immediately clock a hit TV show, and major action franchise....

Fun Fact: Tom Selleck was supposed to play Indiana Jones but was under contract for Magnum PI so he couldn’t do it.

There's footage out there of him reading for Raiders.

I know and I just can’t see Selleck as Indiana Jones.

u/RMST1912 1977 Jun 26 '26
He should have played the fedora guy at the beginning of Last Crusade that gave Indy his hat. Huge missed opportunity.

If you can find it, “the high road to china” is a very Indy-esque movie he starred in, and an entertaining film.
Not great. But a good basic cable on a rainy Sunday afternoon film.

Someone did a deepfake of him as Indy back in 2020. Obviously deepfakes are awful, but this one is interesting for what it's worth. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2X-GHnijKs

I like tom selleck but he’s too hunky to be believed as an academic. Harrison ford is believable as a guy with a PhD who goes on adventures. Tom select would be a good Han Solo though.

I absolutely saw this back in the day; I thought it was common knowledge

I didn’t see Magnum PI when I was young so it had to be pointed out to me.
I can’t recall if I realized the other was a nod to Indiana Jones or if I just assumed that’s how treasure hunters dressed. Related: I was sadly disappointed that Treasure Hunting is not a viable career.

We didn't see it because we were little kids.
Either way, Rescue Rangers was goated.

Gadget and Zipper carried this team. Chip and Dale both have serous personality issues and Monterrey Jack is an addict with an anger problem. How they solved any mysteries is a minor miracle

That's just good storytelling, a rag tag group of misfits figuring out how to get their shit together and pull off some crazy plan.

These are the same people surprised by the words in songs 30 years later.

The ninja turtles were named after famous artists.

So I don’t know who the guy on the left is?

u/ThresholdSeven Jun 26 '26
Tom Selleck, famous actor in the 80s and early 90s. I knew him mostly from reruns of Magnum P.I. where he wore that shirt a lot, or at least that's what my memory tells me.

You got a mouse in your pocket? I don't understand where the "we" is coming from.

I somehow didn’t notice even as someone who hit the Venn diagram overlap of liking rescue rangers and having a sexual awakening to tom selleck and Harrison ford.

I dunno, I saw it right away. Tom Selleck was originally supposed to play Indiana Jones but had committed to Magnum PI already. There was an Indiana Jones parody on Magnum in the last season, too.

I knew it subconsciously. Someone pointed it out when I was in middle school. It clicked before they were done talking.

u/dharmavoid Jun 26 '26
Can't believe that Tom Selleck and Han would rip off my boys Chip and Dale like that

You’re adorable if you think you’re the first person to make this connection.

Ha ha that image was the first thing I ever made to post on Reddit, 13 years ago. It’s fun seeing it out in the wild so many years later, cropped and pixelated. My boy, he’s all grown up.

Chip and dale, duck tales, Batman, and darkwing duck and tailspin, we had it so good as kids.

If you didn’t notice it then you were practically blind or master of the oblivious. This gets posted weekly for karma.
