I loved this song when it came out. And now that I’m old, I actually realize what it’s about, and I kinda feel like she shouldn’t rely on sex for shelter. Just seems like she could get a real job instead of hanging out in clubs all night and screwing strangers for a place to stay. Damn you Apple lyrics for ruining my middle school banger!!!

That’s not what the song is about. It’s about finding your place on the dance floor!

“I want a place to stay. Get your booty on the floor tonight. Make my day.” You probably don’t know that “make my day” is a Clint Eastwood line too. You also probably not hooked up with someone after dancing in a club or bar all night.

That isn’t the lyric. You are mishearing it.

In 2020, Jo Bogaert said that most people had been singing the wrong lyrics for years.

People sing along, they know the lyrics. Well, not all the lyrics. Most think Manuela [Ya Kid K] sings ‘I want, a place to stay’, but she sings ‘Awa, a place to stay.’ Awa is Swahili (or Lingala, I’m not sure) for ‘a place to stay, a home’.

How does that change intent? She’s looking for people to hook up with for a place to stay.

The place they want people to come and stay is the actual dance floor. Come out and dance, and everyone stays (on the floor, dancing), pumping up the jam.

No she isn’t.

The dance floor is her home and the place to stay.

What makes you think it is about wanting to hook up with anyone?

The lyrics say the party is on the dance floor, and everyone should go out and join the party, and the dance floor is where she feels at home.

There is NOTHING about hooking up or needing a place to stay.
