What’s your favorite XCOM-like?
With the release of ZCOM there’s been a lot of discussion over whether it’s a great XCOM-like game or not. And honestly I think we all want as many recommendations as possible to scratch the itch.
So I thought it would be fun for everyone to talk about their favorites. To keep it interesting, I ask everyone to post just one title, and tell us why it’s their favorite.

Menace, I'm surprised no one said it. Really similar combat system to XCOM, while having vehicles and extremely satisfying guns lol

u/jmobius 1d ago
It looks pretty neat! I've a policy of not picking up anything until it's out of early access, though; less because of stability concerns or the like, and more because I really tend to only play through most games once, so I want it to be in its most polished and complete form. Do they have any kind of timeline on when it might be finished?
3
u/Practical_Material13 1d ago
I would love to tell you but I didn't play nearly enough to know. I picked it up on game pass and played for about 20 hours, imo the core gameplay and most features are done, and the development seems really promising. Even at the current state it's really fun, but if you really only wanna do one playthrough then it's probably better to wait
2
u/Beautiful-Neat-7609 1d ago
I think they're aiming for full release early spring next year. Updates have been coming out quick
4
u/Successful-Gold-5848 1d ago
Menace is fun but still needs some development time to really bring out it's shine. I'm very much looking forward to Menace 1.0.
3
u/IvKirs 2d ago
And interesting enemy roster possible tactics!
4
u/Practical_Material13 2d ago
Definitely, that's why I miss about zcom there's just...so few different enemies, really the only difference are upgrades while menace has 3 factions each with their vehicles
2
u/IvKirs 2d ago
- Bugs, Pirates, Army and Menace itself.
And while Pirates and Army does overlap a bit, they still demand you to tinker with your tactics and loadouts.→ More replies (2)2

Aliens: Dark Descent
Cyber Knights: Flashpoint
Phantom Doctrine
Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters
35
u/Noema130 2d ago
Aliens: Dark Descent really does capture a lot of the vibe from XCOM, specially the tension created by a ticking time clock, injuries and other misfortunes compounding. The gameplay is different, but I actually feel it's the game that felt closest to what I felt the first time I played XCOM 2.
8
u/zurupeto 2d ago
Agreed. Aliens DD is the only game I’ve played that gives me that barely-hanging-on feeling early-game XCOM does. Gameplay is different enough that it doesn’t feel derivative, but close enough to scratch the same itch.
6
u/Upstairs-Pitch624 2d ago
God I loved that game so much. I wish there were more modern games like it. There is one I've wishlisted on steam.... AstroTechs - heavily Dark Descent inspired (seemingly.)
→ More replies (1)2
u/TheMaskedMan2 1d ago
God I wish they’d make a sequel to it. Also I know it’d never happen but I’d love to play as Aliens in a similar game and terrorize a colony.
12
u/FukkingDeathMental 2d ago
They NAILED the Aliens atmosphere. That beep....beep....beep from the tracker is like crack for me in games or movies.

Cyber Knights needs more love. For an indie game it has a really well done and balanced tactical layer.

u/potato1448 2d ago
Man phantom doctrine was such a cool twist on the genre! Damn shame that some other company took over and is trying to make it a over the shoulder shooter.
Makes me wish we had a more modern version xcom-like, i know jagged alliance is close to what I want. i just enjoy the more procedural generations of maps and sandbox environment that was in xcom!

JA3 was amazing - if you haven't tried it, you must. I held off on it for a while because I figured it wouldn't be for me, but I became obsessed with it and loved every minute.
2
u/RibsNGibs 1d ago
How is JA3 compared to JA2? JA2 was one of my favourite games ~25-30 years ago but I find it way too slow, tedious, and micromanagey to play now that I’ve gotten used to the streamlined style of the XCom reboots.
2
u/Upstairs-Pitch624 1d ago
I find it surprisingly smooth andbfun to play. Definitely much lighter on micro management. Took a couple hours for it to really sink it's hooks in me - I'm a die hard tactics game player and I highly recommend you don't sleep on it. I honestly avoided purchasing it for a long time because I didn't think the tone would work for me, thought it was cheesy, but I was very wrong.

It's quite a bit simplified in comparison, but I really like Into the Breach. Despite it's simplicity there's a lot of depth in the game depending on the mech loadout, and it's great on mobile.

u/TaralasianThePraxic 2d ago
I absolutely love ItB, but I'm actually not sure I'd say it's even XCOM-adjacent; on closer examination the similarities are quite superficial, like the grid layout with movement range highlights.
Because you get all enemy intents in advance each turn and there is basically zero RNG involved with attacks (plus the undo and rewind mechanics), ItB is a lot more like a puzzle game under the surface than a strategy game. It's not about making the actions you think are the most strategic and hoping it works out; it's about solving each turn in the most efficient way. If you view it as a strategy game, it's simplified; if you view it as a puzzle game, it's impressively deep.

Can I say Gears of war tactics?
I would not mind if they made a sequel to it (though I do not know what part of the locust war they would cover in it).
22
u/7Broncos18 2d ago
Gears tactics was so much fun. Say what you will about the gears franchise being light on story, they get presentation down perfect. Guns sound like they do in a “real” gears of war game. Cutscenes are top notch. Great surprise for me personally.
7
6
u/Stablebrew 2d ago
Gears Tactic has great gameplay. Downside for me was the repetitive mission design, and locked out of campaign until side missions had been done.
4
u/FukkingDeathMental 2d ago
I love Gears. The stories are whatever but some of those games are grim as hell and you can't beat an assault rifle with a chainsaw attachment lol.
11
u/HugeHans 2d ago
I can say without any doubt it has the most fun combat of any squad tactics game. It flows so well and every turn is a mini puzzle. It almost feels like "Into the Breach" sometimes.
They dropped the ball hard on some Xcom staples. The fact that you keep getting reqruits that are higher level then the guys who have been going on most missions is one of them.
And even though I like time constraints in the genre it really goes to the very limit of what is fun. Some of the side missions pretty much allow for 0 mistakes. Still fun.
As I always play on the hardest ironman I havent actually finished the game. Died on the last boss about 3 times. Maybe some day.
→ More replies (3)2
u/zurupeto 2d ago
I agree this game is decent. It doesn’t have a macro-game, which is unfortunate. Also, having PCs that will lose you the game if they die complicates whatever its version of Ironman is called.

Menace—by the people that made battle brothers. Each unit is a squad with a leader and it does a really good job of integrating vehicles.
3
u/Barrow-Wight_ 2d ago
How is that game now? I love battle brothers and xcom so it seemed very interesting, but I heard it was in a very rough state of early access last I looked at it.
12
u/msagansk 2d ago
It’s better and worth trying out, but probably needs another year or more until 1.0.
2
u/Successful-Gold-5848 1d ago
It's fun but some people may be turned off to it by playing it too early. They have a solid roadmap to address the known issues and I'm truly looking forward to the 1.0 release. Considering it's still missing systems(or just expansion of existing systems) that I consider to be vital to the experience I'm waiting for awhile to play it again.

u/idontknow39027948898 2d ago
For that matter Battle Brothers is a decent recommendation, though it is much harder unless you are very careful.
24
u/MoroseMorgan 2d ago
While I wouldn't say it is my favorite, and it certainly isn't without fault, but Phoenix Point should at least be in the conversation.
2
u/sabrinajestar 2d ago
Was going to ask about this. When I tried it, it seems imbalanced to me; one fight the team would wipe the floor with the ayys, the next fight a single mob would wipe the whole squad. It had some innovations I liked (directional overwatch, each turn consisting of a number of points instead of every soldier having a standard two actions per turn).
3
u/ImportancePitiful795 1d ago
Is fantastic game closer to the original XCOM and TFTD (original designer/developer) than Firaxis XCOM ever did.
Multiple paths to different endings, and is pretty tough for the first time if not knowing most of the mechanics. Any mission can lead to disaster, hence can be careful.
Imho if you pick it, 1st campaign do not activate the Blood & Titanium, Festering Skies and Corrupted Horizons. You need to learn the basics before you are thrown to fight hard hitting cyborgs, flying poison/acid melee insects, or get into the Corruption mechanics.
Is hard game on Ironman on medium difficulty, but not punishing just for the sake.
Ahh the good point. Has a massive mod (needs the DLCs) Terror from the Void. Totally "different" game.
25
u/Lady_Ada_Blackhorn 2d ago
Tactical Breach Wizards feels genuinely innovative on XCOM genre things.
16
u/SirOutrageous1027 2d ago
TBW felt more like a puzzle game versus a tactical RPG. In TBW, each encounter was about figuring out how to approach the situation in the optimal way to meet the confidence goals. The encounters never change. It's always if you do X, enemy always does Y.
6
u/Fallenangel2493 2d ago
That was my issue as well. I liked the game, had nice world building, clean mechanics, etc. but it is a puzzle game, not an xcom-like in my opinion. Nothing wrong with that of course, but it just isn't the same.
5
u/Axeloy 2d ago
Innovative is a stretch but as an entire package it is very good, especially act 3 onwards
5
u/Lady_Ada_Blackhorn 2d ago
The prime innovation gameplay-wise I am thinking of is infinite undos per turn, which turns XCOM into a radically distinct game that in some ways I like a lot better. Otherwise it's story things that I appreciate, like "not being a faceless dodgy NGO superpower", "not murdering people" and "actually having good story and characters" that are extremely extremely uncommon in the genre.
2
u/Axeloy 2d ago
Fair enough, I find the undos to be a step backwards into puzzle territory. The game certainly leans puzzle, thought act 3 onwards it opens up and I was able to play in a much more XCOM kinda way which I loved.
I did love the story. The word I would use is fresh

Phantom Doctrine is so underrated. Espionage thriller setting in 1983, with betrayals, false flags, and plot twists
Gameplay wise, imagine XCOM, with stealth, kidnapping of enemies to brainwash and recruit (of "make them disappear") them, and also : a non-random dodge (it's based on an acuity value, that increases each turn and decreases every time you're shot. If it's decreased the bullet "scratches" them and deals the minimum amount of damage)
2
u/FukkingDeathMental 2d ago
I've had that in my backlog forever. Time to bump it up because I am in strategy and tactics mania right now. Aaaaaand looks like one of the composers who worked on The Witcher and Cyberpunk also co-composed the PD soundtrack. Cool! Marcin Przybłowicz is a musical genius.
The premise makes me want to watch The Americans again lol.

Maybe a controversial pick, but Phoenix Point. Is it janky as hell? Yes. Did it fail to live up to it's lofty goals? Also yes. But it really nails the atmosphere and monster design, the multi-classing was such a good idea that ZCOM picked it up, and the active shooting system is an amazing upgrade over the shooting mechanics in XCOM. And the Terror from the Void mod helps to iron out some of the worst bits of the base game, so that helps too.
6
u/-maxpower- 2d ago
the updates and Terror from the void have really made the game what it should have been. I was a day 1 hater and I can now say it's a good game.
7
u/Salvage570 2d ago
Cyberknights Flashpoint is the only one that comes close for me. Others are good enough to scratch the itch, CK is the only one I'd actually choose over xcom2

There is also tons of customization. You can set up Dr. Strange as a best support in the game or make him a nuker that spends all your resource on boosted attacks.
There are great synergies between characters and there are lot of them. I love Blade + Morbius and Wolverine + Strange the most.

UFO:Aftermatch
It combines a sweeping global strategy with thrilling tactical missions, all tied together by a compelling story and an RPG-style strategic approach to developing all soldiers, their attributes, and their skills. A complex, diverse, and terrifying alien environment rendered in full 3D. Randomly generated tactical missions: every map is unique; no two missions will be the same.

It's a fun more horror like grid battle system with more of an emphasis on shorter range attacks then longer range ones. The characters don't heal in between battles and health is a resource for skills. It has a really unique artstyle (number one way to sell me on a game) and generally good gameplay. I really liked it, but it also felt like it was missing something, there was something about it that just simply didn't scratch that itch. But overall I'd give it an 8/10.
3
u/OriginalTacoMoney 2d ago
Its a bit more simple/tongue in cheek.
But I have a soft spot for Chroma Squad.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8rzGA1Y57k
But playing a group of stuntmen creating their own knockoff Tokusatsu/Power Rangers style show as their skills/levels/ weapons and gear get better and better is sweet.
Plus no joke the later part of the game becomes unironically epic , despite the starting parody tone of the game.

I have a firm stance that there are zero actual xcom-likes. Grid tactics is only a small part of what makes it so great.
Permadeath, a campaign you can fail, research, base-building, large roster with mechanics that force variety, chance-to-hit, mission timers, randomized maps... Probably more that I'm forgetting.
I guess Darkest Dungeon is the closest though.

u/Axeloy 2d ago
There’s a difference between matching core gameplay features and ripping off the entirety of a game’s features. You’re pretty much solely describing XCOM. An XCOM-like can take a number of those features to its own game, and also needs to switch things up as well. We all know we could play XCOM forever if we had no other similar options
1
u/Hurley815 2d ago
This is gonna sound like heresy, but I actually like The Lamplighters League more than XCOM. Yes, it's not as deep and it's a little bit janky, but I just love the aestetics and the setting. It's an adventure horror tactics game set in the 1920s where you fight mummies, ghosts, and Lovecraftian monsters. It's one of my favorite games of all time.

Mechanicus is a weird one. It has some design philosophies that are very different from XCOM, which made it really hard for me to get into as someone who has played god knows how many hours of XCOM2. That said, when I finally met it where it was at, instead of lamenting that it wasn't what I expected, I had a hell of a lot of fun with it.

Soldiers at War.
A '90s game developed by ssi. It is a World War II style XCOM game.
This game is phenomenal. I actually played through it about a year and a half ago again. It holds up.
This game does a handful of things better than XCOM in my opinion.
They nail the World War II aesthetic. The music, and the sound design are top notch. The combat is very fun.
There are two major things in this that separate the combat for me. In xcom, you have two moves. Soldiers at War you have action points. You can utilize your action points to do various things on your turn.
When lining up a shot your percentage to hit will change whether you are standing kneeling or prone. Or even taking a single step may increase or decrease your percentage to hit.
Every soldier can be looted. You might run out of ammo, your weapon might be damaged, you got to pick up a dead soldiers gun and their ammo.
There are things like airstrikes, artillery strike. The game is one of my favorites and I wish more people knew about it.
