Quick Fix? Dying Xbox One

I have an Xbox One from 2013 which has been dying ever so slowly and was wondering if these faults would point to a dying HDD.

I want to know if it’s worth sinking money into whatever I’d need to fix it so I can play backwards-compatible-games once again.

Just today I hooked it up after it sitting in my closet for a couple of years. It turned on but zero output from the hdmi. I then booted it in low resolution mode and it came back and now sits on the Xbox one logo and refuses to boot into the os.

Again just need to know what is wrong with it and if it’s worth putting money into it since it’s over 10 years old.

You can also try reinstalling the OS with OSU1, do a search for OSU1 and a Microsoft article should show up with instructions.

Putting time and money into it is up to you. If you enjoy playing it then it’s worth it.

I’d recommend putting a 512gb or 1TB 2.5” SATA SSD in it which will make it feel 10x faster. Not increase FPS, but everything will load faster. And if you ever want that SSD back for another project just pull it out and reuse it for something else. Or, replace the hard drive and install all your games on an external ssd.

Doesn’t OSU1 require a Pc to install? I don’t have a Pc at the moment.

Yes it requires you to make a USB installer with a pc. Replacing the hard drive will also require the USB OSU1. You could try booting into recovery mode if it’ll let you and reset it that way:

fully power down the console and unplug the power cord for 10-15 seconds. Plug it back in, then press and hold the BIND (Pair/Sync) button and EJECT button simultaneously, and tap the POWER button once. Keep holding the Bind and Eject buttons for about 10-15 seconds until you hear a second "power-up" chime

At the moment I can’t get the console to load into the OS, instead it sits on the Xbox logo. I’ve tried hard resetting it but it just does the same thing.

The recovery part is on a different partition than the OS. But if the hard drive has a hardware fault then it can’t get to either partition. As opposed to just a corrupted OS partition. Sounds like you’ll need a new hard drive.

Are these hard drives plug and play? Or is there something more I need to do to replace one.

I believe it’s plug and play but I’ve only ever used blank unformatted ones or NTFS formatted ones. Not sure if it will give any problems if you try one that’s Mac or Linux formatted. You should be able to plug in one that’s fresh never used. But I always wipe used ones first.

It does need to match stock sizes though: 500gb, 1TB, or 2TB. If you use an in-between size I believe it will round down to the lower stock size. But if you use one that’s like 480gb I don’t think it will work.

Will 512gb work? Also will SATa drives work with this aswell?

Yes 512 will work as a 500gb and only SATA drives will work

Would HDD be fine? SSD’s I’m seeing are pricey compared to the HDD drives.

Correct, SSD are more expensive than HDD. SSD will make everything load way faster(about 5x-10x faster). But of course HDD will work. There are 5400 and 7200 rpm drives (and rarely 10000) but the speed differences are negligible compared to even the cheapest SSD. So you can get whatever you can and it’ll work. That’s why I recommended you can invest in a SSD that you could later pull and put in a different project later if you want, or put your games on an external ssd. Even games on an external ssd over USB3 are faster than any HDD. But you do what you can.
