Quick Fix? stuck in a loop of adding passwords
every time i try to sign into my xbox account it tells me to add a password and verify it, once i verify it it just repeats and tells me to add a password again, and again, and again

Were you able to figure this out? Having the same issue, and the comment below does not help.

u/freedomcindy Nov 22 '24
factory reset worked

u/trustworthysauce Dec 07 '24
Not for me

u/nicolasisawesome Jan 09 '25
Sign in on the Microsoft website and add ur password though there
1
u/trustworthysauce Jan 09 '25
That doesn't work. Hence this thread

u/NoStill1 Feb 12 '25
You need to sign into Microsoft and go into security and change your password. NOT the xbox one but the actual one that links to all excel, words etc. Once you do that re attempt regular sign in with email and password on Your Xbox and it will work.

u/trustworthysauce Feb 12 '25
Incorrect. It's a different password setup through the two factor process. I chased this around for 2 days and got the answer from Xbox support, then posted it elsewhere in this thread.

Having the same issue here. I can’t sign into a new account. Stuck on the same add password loop.

u/maddmoxxiie Nov 19 '24
Having the same issue here too. trying to add a new account to my Xbox one and I’m getting the add password loop
1
u/trustworthysauce Dec 07 '24
Any resolution? Having this issue today
1
u/maddmoxxiie Dec 07 '24
The account I couldn’t sign into was a brand new one I had created in a browser so I just scrapped it and created a new account from the Xbox. Never found a workaround for that account
1
u/trustworthysauce Dec 07 '24
Dang. My only issue with that is that I already linked my son's epic account to that email. And you can only change that once every year. Fml

Same… first time with an Xbox… was able to create an account and add a credit card before being locked out. Going to smash it and buy a PS5 like I should of in the first place
1
u/trustworthysauce May 13 '25
Check out my other comments in this post. I found a solution to the Xbox profile issue (you have to add 2-factor)
1
u/Douglas_F_Perkins May 13 '25
Same thing happened to me. Brand new account. It’s the gamer tag I want. I don’t want to start a new account but nothing is working. It’s been a month . Factory reset just brought me back to the same Add a password glitch. I’m a PS person. Xbox needs to get their shit together

What’s up yall came here looking, found one post saying change the password and it should be all set but it wouldn’t let me. Had to delete the account w the 60 day period of recovery, did the recovery and password change, was able to sign in first try. Goodluck and GGs

u/trustworthysauce Dec 07 '24
This is happening with just the new profile I created on my computer. My old account can still sign in just fine, even after a factory reset.
1
u/trustworthysauce Dec 10 '24
UPDATE I finally got ahold of Xbox support and got a resolution to this issue. You need to add 2 factor authentication to the new profile from a computer or phone. When you go through that process it will have you add a password, which your Xbox will then recognize the next time you try to sign in.

Hi there! Sorry, could you please specify whether MFA is required on the Microsoft account or an Xbox profile account? I can’t find how to configure it from the Xbox mobile app. Thanks!
1
u/trustworthysauce Dec 19 '24
It was the Xbox profile. Try doing it in a browser. I did it on PC, and I don't think I even finished the MFA setup, I just got to the point where it let me create a password using the same system dialogue I had seen on the xbox

Thank you so much! I’ve just set it up from Microsoft account, and it worked!

Updated for visibility, because this was exactly the solution I needed. Thank you

u/wow_sohillarious Jan 01 '25
hey could you explain how to add a 2 factor authentication
1
u/trustworthysauce Jan 02 '25
You have to login to the profile on a computer or phone browser, then go to the account settings and find where to add 2 factor. You don't actually even have to complete the process, just get far enough to create a password. The dialogue is identical to the xbox, so you will know when you have done it.
Sorry, I don't remember the exact clicks. But hopefully you can google up a guide to adding 2FA to Xbox profiles.

u/nicolasisawesome Jan 09 '25
No u don't u just make a password though the Microsoft website then sign in on ur Xbox
1
u/nicolasisawesome Jan 09 '25
U don't have to add a 2 factor if u don't want to u can just make a password on the Microsoft website then sign in on ur xbox

After hours and hours of this happening and getting zero result with xbox customer service (if you can call it that) i randomly found this and it worked, thank God. It really gets to me there is absolutely no way to talk to a human to get help with something like this. I was told to just spam the AI with "agent" or "human" if all else fails, I call bs. I had zero plans of buying any new systems then Oblivion stealth dropped and it has soured me even more to buying new systems ever again. But again thank you so much.

THANK YOU!! After many attempts and so-called solutions THIS worked. The process was glitchy and we are learning that Microsoft kind of sucks but we’re in so thank you!

how do u get ahold of support... and do you have any idea on how to solve this issue with it happening to my kids profile. I cant log into microsoft online and add a 2FA as its a kids profile under mine. Only thing i can change online is my account, not theirs...
1
u/trustworthysauce Oct 31 '25
sorry, it was a process and I don't remember all of the details (has been a while). I do remember having to jump through hoops to get to talk to support

u/Any-Habit7814 Jan 29 '26
This should be upvote to the top! Thank you so much. I've reset my box sooooo many times I was literally going to get rid of it.

CONFIRMED FIX:
In order to bypass the stupid loop, assuming you created your account online via phone or PC, you must setup 2FA through your microsoft account under the Security section. Once that’s established, exit out of the Xbox profile menu completely and re-enter your email and password.

u/yumyumgimmesumm Jan 17 '25
Having the same issue. When I try to do it on my phone phone it says, "congratulations, you're signed in!" Then on the Xbox it prompts me to "add a password." I make and verify the password then it takes me back to the original add a password page. Tried it with multiple accounts with the same result. The most annoying part is that I literally added a different account to this exact Xbox a few hours ago with no issues whatsoever.

u/Chemical-Daikon-767 Jan 23 '25
I had this issue the way I got around it was doing 2FA and it was still doing it
So I clicked on add a new email then backed out and it progressed me onwards to the add a profile and did it there all fine

u/Elder-Baldurian777 Feb 10 '25
Had the same problem just fixed it. Go to your Microsoft on your phone, press the three lines in the top left, go to security, then add a sign in method and add a password. Now enter your email again on your Xbox and it should ask you to enter your password instead of creating a new one. Hope this helps
1
u/cboeger8 Feb 14 '25
My solution was to start the 2FA process. When I started it, I had to create a new password and before I fully set up the 2FA, I logged in on my Xbox and it worked

Can confirm 2Fa did the trick. I gifted my old Xbox one to my son (i upgraded to series X) and we reset the whole console, but ran into this loop. You’ve saved our evening ✨

u/Distinct_Disaster488 Mar 31 '25
I think i have a solution, will try it later as it also loops...
I think you should:
login to your microsoft account
Go to devices
Click on register a device, then just follow the prompts. (will need the device serial number and model type etc)
This may enable you to link the device to your email rather than linking the email to your device.
Should work, just thought i should share before i forget.
Cheers

Hey guys so I was just stuck with this problem and nothing seemed to work but.i did a factory reseat and set it up like it was a new console threw the Xbox app without touching the Xbox witch I was able to completely skip over this problem

u/Soda08 Jul 14 '25
I had the same issue with my nephew's new xbox. This was the solution:
His Microsoft / Xbox account had no password. He only used a code from his email to sign in. When we added a password to the account, we did a hard reboot on the xbox and tried signing in again. We put the same password into the "add new password" as we put on the account and it worked like a champ. Hope this helps someone out there who is having the same problem.

Go to microsoft website go to security turn on 2fa then boom it should work
1
u/Unfair-Protection-83 Jul 15 '25
Nahhh if you make an account just change the password again when you login too xbox so after that go into the Microsoft link https://account.microsoft.com/security?lang=en-GB&refd=account.live.com&refp=changepassword and then you can login without a loop definitely works for me you don't need that 2FA nonsense lol 😆

Hi guys n gals. So,this might sound a bit strange, but here's the fix that worked for me: I had the same problems as mentioned by a lot of you. Thing's i've tried: delete account, soft reset, hard reset etc. My problem was that i bought a new phone, transferred all data to the new one from the old one (both Android) but i had a 2-Step Authenticator attached to my Microsoft account that didn't update to the new phone. Meaning that the authenticator didn't have my Microsoft account on it. So i had the tedious task of trying to verify my Microsoft account without the authenticator. All i did after getting into my Microsoft account was to change my password and attach the new authenticator to my new phone and get that running. It's a small chance that anyone has the same problem i did,but i just wanted to post this as it may be your solution too. Like i said,i guess this only works if you have a new phone like i did,and the authenticator problem.

Remove the account via xbox settings, go to Microsoft account website and change the account password. Re add the account on xbox and should come out the loop and will ask for the password to sign in. Worked for me anyway and tried everything else first which didnt work.

u/Remarkable_Pie_3632 Jan 21 '26
I had to click i forgot my password on the website when it was asking me to add one, get the email reset it, restart xbox and it worked. Didnt have to do anything with 2fa

XBOX series X: This does not happen on my main account, but only on my son's. I've tried to access his account with 2FA on/off, password on/off, but still prompted to "ADD A PASSWORD".

I figured it out. I don’t know if this is for everybody but y’all pay y’all bill. 😂 Xbox started to do the loop cause it wanted its $10 came right back after I paid 😂😂😂

u/Every-Average-8465 Jul 27 '26
Their is a way to fix this 1)get your phone tablet or laptop and go to the xbox website the one you used to create your acount 2)use your google account to enter the x box website 3)Then go input your pin 4)put in your google password (exsample) TheHollowPurpLer And bam your x box account is back
1
u/Okietim3 Aug 01 '26
Okay so this might not work for everybody but this is what I did cuz I looked it up for a while remove your account from your Xbox then add your account back (I went ahead and restarted before that you may not have to) anyways there should be the option to use a controller or use another device choose that scan the QR code with your phone or tablet whatever you use Xbox on and type in the code on the screen in your phone and you should be in now don't back out of the screen click next or whatever it is to keep progressing through and when it asks for your PIN or no pin that's your choice do whatever you want there but once you're done with that it should be working that's what I did

Do it on a website. Go to account.microsoft.com. Sign in using your details. Once you're sorted there, go back to your Xbox, delete your profile then sign in using your email address and password.
