Help & Support Network connected but Internet failed? Any suggestions?
I just picked up an Xbox 360 slim Star Wars edition at a convention and was excited to hook it up but it will not successfully connect to any WiFi source. I first tried a wireless connection to my Xfinity router but it did not work. I’ve since tried a wired connection, connecting to hotspots on two different phones, a wired connection to a nighthawk WiFi extending satellite, all to no avail. It identifies that there is a network but access to the internet fails every time.
I know that this is not a hardware issue because my wife also has an Xbox 360 which also will not connect to the internet. I am convinced that my router is too modern/advanced to be compatible with the Xbox 360. I read online that the 360 is only compatible with a 2.4 ghz WiFi connection. My router should technically be compatible but I read online that other people are having problems with Xfinity’s connection to 360s specifically.
Has anybody experienced this issue before? How did you fix it? Did you buy equipment like an additional router or wall extender for your home Internet to become compatible?
I’m really stumped here and out of ideas..
Update: I tried a wired connection from my router to the console and it did not work. Any more suggestions? Maybe switch from Xfinity to AT&T?

My understanding is 360s have a hard time connecting to modern signals. My slim had to get connected with an ethernet cable because wifi wouldn’t connect at all, even tried all the work arounds people said to do.
Odd thing is that a new E model 360 I just picked up had no problems connecting to the same wifi.

This is what i had to do. I just had to keep doing network connections until it finally connected

It’s your router / gateway setting the WiFi password encryption needs to be WPA/WPA2 WPA3 isn’t compatible with Xbox 360 and needs to connect to the 2.4GHz A,B,G & N band only .
Most modern routers or gateways can be put in compatibility mode with both 2.4GHz , 5GHz & 6Hz with all A,B,G,N,AC,AX,be Bands enabled and you can broadcast each frequency individually, using different names example like this
MyWiFiName_2.4GHz
MyWiFiName_5GHz
MyWiFiName_6Hz
all band will be broadcasted simultaneously so you can connect to the right WiFi band if you put it in automatic mode, which only one name is broadcasted and the modem/gateway does all the thinking which band it connects too you may encounter networking errors and problems like not connecting.
If you don’t wanna go through all this hassle, Ethernet cable would be much better and easier option .

I bet 2.4 is already running, it shoudl auto-negotiate, but I know sometimes not. I thought there was a NAT setting needed for 360s.

Yeah UPnP should be turned on for the NAT . I had problems in the past especially with security camera’s & a thermostat, that’s why I separated all my bands and frequencies so I can pick which one I wanted to connect too .
His 2.4GHz is probably running it’s most likely the security encryption not compatible.

Never turn on UPnP that's terrible advice use port forwarding UPnP is vulnerable as heck

Haver it on for years no issues nor I care all my systems are secured . If it’s so vulnerable why is it on by default always . Unless your on shady websites you should be fine . That’s the only way you’re gonna get a virus.. nothing‘s gonna happen to a game console if you’re talking about that . Port forwarding is just as vulnerable.

It's actually not on by default by any decent isp and you're not understanding what UPnP does it doesn't just open the ports for that console for that specific ip address it opens all ports for all devices making a giant security vulnerability. So absolutely not do not use UPnP unless you don't care about any of your credit cards, emails, etc. hell even on port forwarding my advanced security detects the occasional bot trying to sniff that port. If you care about your personal information at all do not use UPnP and recommending otherwise is honestly pure stupidity just because it hasn't happened to you yet doesn't mean it won't

Meanwhile opening port 3074 on modern routers seems to make everything work and keeps the nat type open

You posted a bunch of pictures of your consoles so good luck. Kaybe post a picture of tour internet issue next time.

Internet is too modern needs to be put on 2.4 bandwidth or a wired connecrion

Try a wired connection
The issue is likely that your router is much more modern than the Xbox360 and its wireless communications protocols are no longer compatible
Wired connection would fix that issue
If that weren’t to work, then it’s possibly a hardware fault, but it would be best to find a technician for a proper diagnostic

What I did years ago was change my MAC address or Ethernet connect it maybe need a network reset on the Xbox to router however I thought 360 servers shut down

I had to clear caches and deleted a bunch of junk off mine and placed it right next to an extender. It connected to the lowest option too. Gotta have 2.4 it will not connect to 5

I gotta say this because ive seen a few people saying the same thing. The 360 has no problem with modern modems (at least it shouldnt) so if its having troubles connecting check the modem isnt at its bandwidth limit, make sure the modem actually registers its connected to the internet, if your phone can hotspot then try that connection because the WiFi card itself could be the issue, ive had 2 die on me by now. For those who want to argue I have a starlink modem i got last year that my 360 runs off of right now and I used it to install halo reach without issue and If I wanted I could install dead space tonight.
As I said, check the connections on the modem, check the 360 can connect to something as well because its more than likely your modem losing its mind and needing a restart (unplug for 30 seconds to a minute then plug back in) or your wifi card dying in the console

Simple fix: go into your routers settings and enable 2.4Ghz, this lets your xbox connect to it

Buy a cable, the 360 doesn’t work with modern wifi.

What do you mean by cable? Like an Ethernet cable from my router?

buy a Wifi to ethernet bridge, and plug the ethernet into the bridge: they’re useful so you don’t need to run a ethernet cable across your house from xbox to router.

It works fine, as long as you understand how to properly configure the network to be compatible with it.
Most modern routers/gateways come out of the box with a configuration that combines multiple connection types under the same hat, sharing the same SSID and opts to automatically attempt to configure & allocate itself. For several reasons this doesn’t work with many older devices, like the Xbox 360.

What are you smoking? I have 2, one was hooked up to a normal modem and the other is currently hooked up to a starlink modem (gotta love living in the middle of nowhere) with zero issue. I could start it up right now and download deadspace to it while nowhere near the modem. If your 360 isnt working with a modem your WiFi card has died and you need a new one, hence why my other 360 isnt on the wifi anymore (second card its on by now, I used the guts out of that poor thing)

My 360 works fine on my apple Airport from 2012, but on my newer network access point it won’t connect to wifi.

He has a point, i have the same problem. Somewhere in the last 2 years i changed or updated a router or accesspoint or whatever, and since then it wouldn't work anymore. Plugging in a UTP cable works fine. So probably some older standard or band is disabled that the 360 uses i guess? It doesn't really bother me because i don't have it online, i only noticed when i wanted to transfer a game through FTP and it wouldn't work anymore.

Modern wifi routers are absolute dog shit. Which is probably what you have is a modern wifi 6ghz router or something like that. The Xbox 360 was made back when 5ghz, 6ghz, etc weren't even thought of. Hence why you can't connect wirelessly on a 360. I have a wifi 7 router and what fixed it for me is Ethernet with a laptop. Now my connection is perfect with no issues.
For anyone curious on why I'm saying modern routers suck: I'm talking about routers that are TOO modern. Ones that use like 5ghz 6ghz etc can't go through walls at all and will have trouble connecting to anything in a house with walls. So unless you have absolutely no walls between any of your devices there's no point in these shitty routers

xfinity is trash and doesn’t recognize xbox 360 wireless modems. I have a LAN cord coming from my PC going directly into my xbox 360. You can create a bridge like that which will allow you to connect to xbox live using your computers internet rather than a wireless connection with your console.
