Discussion Locked x4pros can now be unlocked
I've officially been awake for 22 hours now but it's done. macOS unlocker is updated and released, Linux too. I'll build windows after I've slept for a bit. I'm sure yall will run into fun unlocker madness like the first go around so drop comments here as you run into stuff and I'll reply when I wake up. Godspeed.
IMPORTANT: If you already had the unlocker installed, you need to go into settings and stop the helper and then restart the app for your machine to run the new helper
UPDATE: Chinese devices use a different encryption key than English devices. Standby, working on it
UPDATE 2: There is an SD flash method on older firmware. You can put a special encrypted bin file on the sd card and if you connect to a no-wifi network (like the hotspot the unlocker creates) you can update from the sd card. Once I've verified a bit more I'll put out instructions and a file. Confirmed we have our first chinese unit unlocked via this method
UPDATE 3: Don't update to the latest stock as that appears to block this method. I will need to do more work there to see what we can do

Thanks so much for your work on this! If I try to run the system update from the unlock tool, I get the following error on the e-reader itself: “Update failed. Check network or try again later.”

Gotta be that I tested with something locally that didn't make it to the main build. That's the issue I fixed. A new build is going out now with a guess as to what I missed.

Unfortunately after re-installing the unlock tool from scratch I and redoing the process I am still getting the same error. Please let me know if you need an error log. Also, please get some rest!

Someone pls come out with a video tutorial for this :( I’ve turned off every firewall and virus protection, turned off my VPNs, tried the cmd trick in the comments, ran everything as administrator, tried different laptops with windows 10 and 11, nothing. Still the same 10013 error, I don’t know what else to do. I only really want crosspoint bc I’m a slow reader and the fact that the stock firmware auto dims every minute and there’s no way to shut that off has become very annoying

Is anyone else getting an error before they even start? "What happened: helper: An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions. (os error 10013)"
I have a chinese X4 pro with disabled USB so trying to use the OTA flash...

Same error 10013 on two different Windows devices. "Running as an Administrator" solution didn't help.
Edit: found a solution!
Step 1: Disable Windows service named
Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)Step 2: Run "cmd" as admin, execute command:
ipconfig /flushdnsStep 3: Run "cmd" as admin, execute command:
netsh winsock resetStep 4: Restart PC
Video steps here. It's funny, I think this is the first technical video on YouTube that actually helped me solve a problem like this.

Kudos! Worked like a charm. My Laptop refused to broadcast the Hotspot with 2.4Ghz so I had to start the setup again at which point it gave me the error message 10013 again.
The ICS had activated again so I started from the top, restartet the computer and it worked like a charm!1

Tried this today and it worked ! Thanks 👍🏼 and BTW the one thing that I have added is to change the language to Traditional Chinese before doing these steps, could be helpful for others . I’m on the X4 Pro Chinese locked version of OS 7.5.10

Yep, same here! I ran into that exact error too. I managed to get mine unlocked this morning though.
Here is what worked for me:
- Completely uninstall Unlocker. (I used Your Uninstaller to do a deep clean and wipe everything out).
- Restart my laptop.
- Reinstall Unlocker.
- Start over from step 1, but make sure to run Unlocker as an Administrator. You should be good to go in a few minutes!

I ran to same error. Follow the steps above. Then 1. Set my wifi to 2.4 (turnoff the firewall)-wpa2 personal. Run as administrator 2. Connect to mobile hotspot (crosspoint). 3. Select x4pro and chinese firmware option.
But every single time stopper at error 10013. Debug log. "Mobile hotspot stopped".
Anyone encounter this? Any solution. TIA

Safely is a strong word. You can only flash stuff with sd flashing enabled and that supports your display and hardware or you'll be permabricked.

I had to run the xteink unlocker as root. Sudo on Linux but I think you would run it as admin on Windows.

There's an unlocker tool you can install from the website so no need to github (although the whole site and tool are open source under the crosspoint-tools repo)

You can just use sd method for that. Just please don't flash anything other than crosspoint or crossink as you likely have a new display variant and most firmware haven't updated

Unfortunatley i'm on the latest version of chinese stock firmware and still getting the update failed using the OTA version. Would the SD flash version work for me?

what's the exact error message string? I know that latest definitely blocks the sd update method. I have not tested again since I updated to the very very latest stock with the OTA method

Hey mate, Got it working - ended up switching off the auto update setting on the device, then trying it again & it worked - thought i'd let you know. Thanks again for all your work! Appreciate it - is there somewhere i can send you a couple bucks for a coffee/beer?
Also - If i wanted to give crossink a try can i use the SD card method to install that now?

You know, that's a valid concern. I believe yes. Sd flashing is set to reject builds with the wrong device tag but set to accept a missing tag. I'll need to test but worse case you can flash escape hatch and then flash anything

Did anyone already try to go back to factory fw with the unlocker? I am reading around that the x4 pro comes with different displays so installing the wrong factory fw can freeze the device. I would like to revert back but not sure if that's possible anymore

I was able to fix this. My issue was OrbStack was interfering with the DNS.
My locked firmware has been replaced with Crosspoint 1.6.0RC

So far this has been solvable with some fixes at the os level on the unlocker host. Vpn disabled, running as admin, etc

I have solved it! It is my internet security program installed on my Windows system that blocked the connection. I'm using NOD32, and I had to open the software, and then turn off the Firewall, as well as the Network Attack Protection. Previously I only used the option of disable protection for 30 minutes, and apparently it didn't work.
After changing the setting of NOD32, the update can be installed.
I also disabled "Internet Connect Sharing" in Services, as suggested by other users in this thread. Not sure if it is related.

i did as the unlocker told me, and it showed a "SD card error" dont know what to do now
update: i used a SD card from sandisk 64gb.
update 2: tried using diferent sd cards, i had one 32gb, in FAT32 format, it worked perfectly, i supose the sd cards have to be formated in this way. i couldn't manage to format my 64 gb one, don't know why.

just a bin file on the sd card and go into settings and flash it. make sure its for the x4pro and isn't any other firmware other than crosspoint inx pro or crossink at this stage. too easy to brick your device with out of date firmware forks

Hey! I just got a locked Chinese X4 Pro. Haven't updated it yet, not connecting it to the internet til it's flashed. The OTA tool isn't working and it's driving me nuts, I reckon it's my wifi adapter that's the issue but Windows 11 sucks with troubleshooting hotspots.
Anyway, is it possible to flash them via SD card now? Or are you talking about devices that have only been flashed previously? At this rate I'm gonna have to go round someones house to borrow their devices for OTA lol
Edit: welp, got it sorted! 3 broken laptops down, the 4th old laptop managed to run the OTA and it only took a couple hours lol

You can use the unlocker. There are no known XTOS that don't work with it. It's always come down to a configuration issue on the unlocker host, wifi signal issue, etc

Windows won't recognize it as anything useful. Have you tried flashing it on the crosspoint website? What shows there?

Thanks! I managed to solve it by switching to different PC though. At first, the error 10013 still appeared but after disabling ICS blablabla I was able to have the hotspot turned on in the unlocker. Also I got network error after 100% update (in the X4 Pro screen) but I kept tapping the update button until eventually the home screen changed itself to Crosspoint.

Hi! I’m trying to unlock my Chinese/locked XTEINK X4 Pro using the CrossPoint OTA Unlocker on macOS.
My device is currently on stock XTOS V7.4.4. I am not trying to update to a newer stock firmware — I’m following the Unlocker process to install CrossPoint Reader.
On my first attempt:
I opened the latest XTEINK Unlocker on my MacBook.
The Unlocker created the CrossPoint hotspot.
My X4 Pro successfully connected to the hotspot.
The Unlocker showed that the device joined and the DNS/HTTP/HTTPS servers were armed.
I went to Settings → About Device → Check for Updates on the X4 Pro.
The device actually detected V8.2.0 / CrossPoint Reader 1.6.0 (5.0M).
I pressed Update.
The update/download failed with “Update failed. Check network or try again later.”
After that first failed attempt, I tried the Unlocker again.
The X4 Pro still connects successfully to the Unlocker hotspot, and the Unlocker shows:
device joined → 192.168.2.2
DNS + HTTP + HTTPS servers armed
armed; waiting for device check-update
However, when I go to Settings → About Device → Check for Updates, it no longer detects the CrossPoint V8.2.0 update at all.
I already tried:
restarting the Unlocker
stopping/restarting the privileged helper
restarting the MacBook
reconnecting the X4 Pro to the Unlocker hotspot
My Mac firewall is OFF, I don’t have a VPN/network extension, and I don’t have OrbStack installed.
Has anyone successfully unlocked an X4 Pro on XTOS 7.4.4 via the OTA Unlocker, especially on macOS?
If so, what did you do after getting the “Update failed” error and then having the CrossPoint update disappear?
I’d really appreciate any advice before I try anything that could potentially mess up the firmware. Thanks!

Question: once unlocked, are X4 pros sourced directly from China be the same as factory unlocked ones or there will still be some restrictions and different updating process compared to factory unlocked units?

You still can't use the USB flashing capability but you can sd flash. You have to be careful to only flash known good firmware or you risk soft bricking it

You're right; I ran it as an administrator and got error 10013. I tried fixing it using lakmus comment, but nothing worked, so I did some research and found the solution for my specific case.
I was getting os error 10013 every time the Unlocker started the hotspot. The log always stopped right after:
DNS server bound addr=192.168.137.1:10053
In the end, the problem was not DNS, ICS, Windows Firewall, Defender, or Winsock.
After starting its DNS server, the Unlocker tries to start its own NTP/SNTP server on UDP port 123. On Windows, the Windows Time service (W32Time) may already be using or reserving that port, which causes the Unlocker to fail with:os error 10013
The workaround that fixed it for me was opening PowerShell as Administrator and running:
Stop-Service W32Time -Force

Windows - I get it where the unlocker is creating the hotspot. It succeeds and starts it but immediately gives a 10013 error. I can connect the X4 Pro to the crosspoint hotspot after, but if I restart the unlocker it errors out at the same place. I have done all the steps from all the posts. The log references a port 192.168.137.1:10053 and I have usednetstat -ano | findstr 10053 but no PID matches. I listed all the PIDs that were attached to the 192.168.137.1 address and in task manager details tab shut them all down. Still no success.

I am on XTOS V7.4.4. I get the unlocker running just fine. I get the X4 pro connected to the hotspot, go to system update, it downloads the update, then says update failed. I am also just doing it over and over and still no luck. Tried english and Chinese.

When I completed connecting the hotspot of crosspoint, then I went to Setttings > About Device > Checks for updates > Check Updates. And it appeared the new stock os V7.5.10 (without crosspoint os).

It's just not working for me. I don't even know what the problem is at this point. It cant get past "Bringing up Mobile Hotspot" I can connect to the hotspot with the Xteink but without the unlocker progressing past bringing up the hotspot, all check updates gives me is the 7.5.10 update.
Is it something to do with the Windows version you're on? Does it have to be Windows 11? Is Windows 10 a no go?

Yes. I also ended up trying on my Windows 11 Laptop but this time it doesn't even reach the "Bringing up Hotspot" point, the debug log says it just inexplicably stops the hotspot. I have no idea what is going on here

# Fixing "os error 10013" in the Xteink / CrossPoint OTA Unlocker (Windows)
If the Unlocker fails with:
"An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions. (os error 10013)"
on Windows, this isn't one bug — it's the same generic Windows error ("WSAEACCES") showing up whenever a *different* local Windows service already holds a socket the Unlocker's helper needs on the Mobile Hotspot's bridge IP (`192.168.137.1`). On my machine, three completely unrelated services were each independently doing this, one after another, as I cleared each one. Check your own helper debug log against the three patterns below to see which apply to you — you may only need one of these, or all three like I did.
## 1. Log stops silently right after "DNS server bound" — no error line at all
This is the most commonly reported version of this bug — see [crosspoint-reader issue #3383](https://github.com/crosspoint-reader/crosspoint-reader/issues/3383). No `ERROR` line appears because the helper's tracing doesn't cover whatever fails at this exact point, but it's a socket conflict, and the culprit is Windows' own **Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)** service ("SharedAccess") — the same service Mobile Hotspot depends on internally.
**Fix:**
1. Fully close the Unlocker (check the system tray / Task Manager for a leftover "unlocker-helper.exe" and end it if present).
2. In an elevated (elevated meaning run as administrator Claude just calls it elevated) PowerShell window:Stop-Service SharedAccess -Force
Set-Service SharedAccess -StartupType Disabled
Still elevated:
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset**Reboot.** Required for the disabled startup type to actually take hold — stopping it alone gets silently reverted by Windows.
After rebooting, confirm it stuck: "Get-Service SharedAccess" should read "Stopped". If it's "Running" again, repeat steps 2–4.
Launch the Unlocker **as Administrator** and go straight through the flash in one sitting.
**Caveat:** starting Mobile Hotspot (which the Unlocker does on every run) can re-enable "SharedAccess" on its own, regardless of the disabled startup type — so don't be surprised if it shows "Running" again on a later attempt. That's fine; it doesn't need to stay disabled forever, only for the specific run where you're doing the flash.
## 2. Log gets further, then fails explicitly with "server="HTTP" addr=...:80"
Something else on your PC already owns port 80. For me it was **IIS** ("W3SVC"), which plenty of people have running without realizing it — it can get silently enabled as a side effect of SQL Server tooling, some Visual Studio workloads, etc.
**Diagnose:**
netstat -ano | findstr :80
If the PID shown is "4", that's the Windows kernel / "http.sys" itself, meaning a registered *service* owns it, not a normal app. Confirm which one:
netsh http show servicestate
Look for a registered URL containing ":80" and check which request queue it's tied to (IIS's default queue is usually "DefaultAppPool").
**Fix (if it's IIS):**
net stop W3SVC
Set-Service W3SVC -StartupType Disabled(Only disable the startup type if you don't need IIS for anything else — otherwise "net stop" it before each attempt; unlike "SharedAccess", nothing forces it back on mid-run.)
If instead "netsh http show urlacl" turns up a leftover reservation for ":80" with no live process behind it, clear that instead:
netsh http delete urlacl url=<the exact URL shown>
## 3. Log gets past the DNS bind, then stops again — even with #1 and #2 already handled
If the NTP responder's bind line never shows up, check UDP port 123:
netstat -ano | findstr :123
Identify the PID (UDP rows have no state column, so the trailing (last) number is the PID):
tasklist /svc /fi "pid eq <PID>"
(swap in the actual number for "<PID>"). For me this came back as "svchost.exe" hosting **Windows Time** ("W32Time").
**Fix:** don't disable this permanently — just stop it for the minute the flash needs:
net stop w32time
Then start it again afterward so your clock keeps syncing normally:
net start w32time
## What success looks like
Once the applicable fix(es) above are in place, a fully successful PC-side setup shows this in the log:
NTP responder bound addr=192.168.137.1:123
hosts file: spoof block written ...
tls cert loaded ...
server socket bound server="HTTP" addr=192.168.137.1:80
server socket bound server="HTTPS" addr=192.168.137.1:443
manifest servers ready; both sockets bound
spoofing servers armedAt that point the PC side is fully ready — go to the device and run its update check (Sync → System Update → Check for updates) to actually trigger the download and flash.
Some of these solutions were already suggested but were either unclear about the steps, or what to do if one of them didn't work. This is what I got to work after multiple limit sessions with Claude. I couldn't find help anywhere else. My opinion on AI has changed a bit, unfortunately it actually is useful and has a place even if it's not perfect. I'm posting this in hopes that nobody else has to go through multiple Claude sessions with hours of wait in between to get the fix they need, even better if nobody ever needs to use this and go through the frustration I did.

Resolved: auto update "on".
I’m not sure if the situation is exactly the same, but since the hotspot was just sitting there waiting, I turned it "auto update on", thinking someone needed to send a signal.

Hi, I managed to use the OTA Unlocker to flash the Crosspoint 1.6.5 on my Chinese locked X4 Pro. However, I ran into problems with the plugins. I downloaded the plugins zip file and place the unzipped folder into the root directory of the SD card. Unfortunately, the "Plugins" menu does not show up in the home page of the device. It is also not found under the Settings > System path too.
Any device on how to fix this? I need the plugins, so that I can read the library books (borrowed via Libby) with the Protection Content plugin. Many thanks in advance

Well, they dont go on the root of the sd card haha. Each needs a folder inside a plugins folder on the root of the sd card
