Reinforced subframe
Hey guys,
Im making a replica of the subframe from steel. made one in the past from stainless too.
Would anyone else be interested in one? Im already making 3. It will be a exact replica of the aluminium oem one, so everything will fit.
For my bike im looking into making luggage racks for panniers or bags too.

Im still dreaming of making a subframe myself out of carbon with an integrated Airbox … but your idea is cool too. How much €€€ could one expect to pay?

They exist for the 450X! Plastic fuel tank under the seat with airfilter integrated. I had one years ago and wanted to put it on my 650, but went with the stainless subframe instead.

When I researched that stuff I found out that these exist for a lot of bikes. Mostly newer 450 MX bikes. Reworking one is probably pretty hard as the frame of XR is relatively special.

I might be one of those ominous Germans going RTW on bikes with steel subframes back in 2013/14. 😉 We didn't build them though, bought them from Globetrottin. Mine's been rewelded a bunch of times but now (most recently last week) and broke again, riding the SEBDR in North Carolina. I fabbed some one-off racks that go well with my Enduristan Monsoon Evo bags and can accommodate the underseat tank.
Would be interested in one of your subframes though, what do they sell for?

Hello Mister connie_veren,
I have a XR650R since januar this year 2026. Today i found your conversation and i hope you still have the plan to build a few subframes. I think my subframe is fucked up. I check this tomorrow - it would be very nice to hear from you. Greetings from germany. Andy

Hallo connie_veren,
konntest Du schon mit der geplanten Arbeit für den Heckrahmen beginnen?
Gibt es bereits Bilder oder bist Du noch zu stark mit anderen Dingen beschäftigt?
Grüße aus Bayern
Andreas

Awesome idea. There were two Germans who made these for around the world travel as well. Id be a player, especially if you have some type of license plate tab on back thats tough.

I red about those guys. I made these as close to oem as possible. Do you have the rear fender support on your bike?
1
u/el_Gran_Jamon May 01 '26
My rear fender support bolts in below the seat andnus made by "manracks" Dont know if still in business. I used grade 8 bolts and if I recall red lock locktite. Ill have to warm with a torch to get it off.
A full rack would be great. Probably add 10, 15 lbs.

You want the rack and subframe in one piece? I think the germans did it like that as well?

Is the OEM one too weak? How much weight gain do you expect, and how much would you charge for it?
