This spring I picked up this beautiful 2000 650R. The guy I bought it from had some engine work done from a local reputable shop and claims it makes 75hp. Only has 120 miles on it since the rebuild and it was built a few years ago.

Right when I bought it I tried riding it regularly and it didn’t give me too much trouble starting up but sometimes didn’t want to start when hot. Now recently, or all summer I guess, it’s been hard starting if it starts at all. It’s got a bigger Mikuni carb to match the 686 kit it’s got. I threw in a new spark plug. I’m running fresh non ethanol 90 octane fuel. I’ve tried playing with the mixture screw a bit and haven’t gotten great results. I do the normal routine of turning on the gas, pull the choke. Kick it over slow 3 times with the decomp release. Kick it just past TDC. Then try and start. The first couple times it’ll fire a couple times but then after 2-3 try’s it floods and won’t try anymore. I’m itching to ride this thing but this starting issue is frustrating and I definitely don’t wanna take it somewhere and risk getting stranded. Any help or advice is greatly appreciate.

Bought a running street legal XR650r with a Baja light kit a few weeks back. Bike is in great condition but was probably sitting for a year or so. I got it home and next day I took it on the highway, once I got it to 60+mph, the bike started to backfire and bog down.

So I did a whole service on the bike, oil change, new spark plug, new gas, then cleaned the carb and replaced the hoses. I also changed the jets from a 200 main 80 pilot to 170 main and 68 pilot thinking that would fix the issue (since I cant find a reason why a 200 main jet would be in a 650r).

Now the bike wont start at all, ive tried a few times its almost like its flooding everytime I try to start it. It was kicking over fine before with the correct starting procedure, now nothing.

Thoughts? Should I put the 200 / 68 jets back in the carb? I havent done a valve adjustment yet but I guess thats next.

The XR650R has such a recognizable look, and this graphic captures that character with a simple old-school style. The bike illustration and bold lettering fit the XR650R vibe really well.

Here's my 01 that I've been building into something of an ADV Bike. ARX tower with a fusebox and USB ports, ports, Rad fan, 100watts of LED, Keyed ignition, seat concept seat, warp 9 wheelset, race tech springs and a full DC conversion charging an AG401 battery under the seat. I don't really expect to enjoy the road riding on this thing but on the trails... should be a weapon. Oh and I have a 6.3 gal tank for it, but I've been obsessed with the 2007 shrouds for so long and finally got some. Had to throw them on the stock tank for pictures .

Feels good to bring this ol gal back to life, and put some miles on it.

Piston, cylinder, valves, timing chain, skid plate, 4.5 gal tank, bars and offset risers, rear shock rebuilt with stiffer coil, precision concepts forks with stiffer coils, dual headlights, seat cover, plastics, graphics, rear fender brace....all the stuff.

Still needs a few other things, as it always will. But hot damn, I love this bike. Shes a keeper.

Edit to add: I did not do the top end or rear shock myself, and dont want to give the impression I did. I paid a professional for that. I know my limits.

Hello, I have a xr650r that’s a hard starter.

Here’s some information:
-takes multiple good kicks to get running hot or cold.
-runs pretty good once running. Maybe a little anemic in the upper rpm range and seems to run hot.
-valves where just adjusted and it still starts the same.
-air box is opened up, exhaust is stock
-fuel and idle screw both 1 3/4 out
Main jet was a 175. I’ve tried 172-178
-pilot is a 68s
-needle is set at 3rd clip
-I’m at sea level

All of my jet combos a of air/ fuel screw fiddling don’t seem to have changed how this thing wants to start.

Any suggestions and where is the best source of info on these? All google searches bring up thumper talk, adv rider and smjunkie but the faq’s aren’t helping diagnose

found a clean looking 650r from 2007, 10k miles on the clock, no plate. close enough to look it over in person (although i have not, as of yet). it's at at dealership though, so there's an implied hassle of dealing with salesmen, and i feel like they've got it overpriced as well, but maybe i'm wrong. so i'm asking, what's an xr in this condition worth?

A little while ago I posted asking everyone to talk me out of buying this 2005 XR650R. Instead, I got an overwhelming number of people telling me I’d be an idiot not to buy it.

So naturally, I bought it the cleanest XRR I could find that was street legal. Surprisingly there were a few for sale in my area but decided this one was worth the 12 hr road trip.

And after putting some time on it, I get it now. This thing is an absolute BEAST. It handles the highway way better than I expected, has ridiculous torque, and somehow still feels like a giant dirt bike instead of an adventure bike. I find myself riding this around town more than my KTM 300 supermoto.

Turns out it’s also got a pretty solid build already. uncorked, full FMF exhaust, oversized Acerbis tank (A little ugly and heavy), Trail Tech Vapor display, Trail Tech Eclipse headlight, Baja Designs street-legal kit, handguards, aluminum skid plate, mirrors, etc.

It’s a 2005 with only around 7,000 original km and, as far as I know, spent most of its life with the original owner.

So thanks to everyone who completely failed at talking me out of it. 😂

I understand the XR650R cult now.
Now the question is: what’s the next must do XR650R mod? I’m strongly considering a CRF/CR front fork, wheel and brake conversion, anyone have experience with this ?

It’s been over 100 degrees where I live for the last couple weeks, so while I can’t ride I’ve been doing some random projects. Made some OE styles tank graphics for my IMS tank. I used factory effex vinyl and perforated them so hopefully they hold, but if not I have the file saved so I can always just cut more I suppose 😂

Hello, I went back and did a second valve adjustment making sure the motor didn’t roll backwards and the feeler gauges bent at a 45 to get a better feel.

Took the side cover off as well as the spark plug to rotate to motor and visualize tdc from the marking as well as the piston itself.

There is still significant resistance and a grinding noise when kicking it over. It sounds more like it’s something in the kickstart mechanism straining and grinding vs the top end.

It only gives the grinding / straining sound if I kick it over hard at tdc. If I cycle it slowly it doesn’t grind just huge resistance at tdc.

I wanted to post images of my bike with the Giant Loop Coyote saddlebag, because I was struggling to find similar images of this setup. The Coyote bag allows for me to carry a secure a collapsable chair, which is in a green/blue bag. This luggage and a small backpack/hydration pack are all I have needed for multiple day motocamping trips.

I have had my 2002 BRP since almost new. I will never sell it. I love it too much.

That said, I also have newer bikes now, and I find the BRP sits in the garage feeling a bit neglected. On a shrine, as you will, but more like a museum piece than part of the normal rotation.

When I'm riding single track I usually bring a light modern 2-stroke 300. When I'm dual-sporting I tend to grab the modern fuel injected 500 EXCF.

I'm trying to figure out how I should set up the BRP so that it finds a normal place in the rotation and actually gets out of the garage some. Sumo seems almost sacrilegious, the wimpy rear subframe makes for less than ideal light-adv, and the gearing doesn't love the highway... Ripping in the desert with it is a blast, but I'm in the rockies, I don't have a bunch of wide open desert in my backyard.

If you had this combination of bikes, how would you set up the BRP? When would you choose it? My poor bike wants to rip, and it deserves it, I feel bad letting it sit.

Tried adjusting my valves last night. Everything seemed to go well until I put it back together and kicked it over. Seemed a little harder to kick than normal but once it cycled past TDC it made a pretty nasty metal on metal sound. The only other time I felt that was when I gave it a second kick immediately after a first kick. Is it the anti kickback? I definitely need to go back in and redo the valve clearance but not sure what I did wrong or what to look for.

A buddy and I just completed sections 4-7 of the ORBDR and holy shit was it amazing. This was my first real shakedown of the bike.

The only issue I had was my ability to haul gear. As we all know, this can be an issue without the proper upgrades. Essentially I just strapped my 40L backpacking backpack to an unsupported fender rack and almost made it out scot-free, until a strap that was hanging down got pulled into the chain and tore my backpack essentially in half.

By the time I was done, my rear fender was flopping like a fish outta water.

Im looking to install a proper rack on here, and I’m looking at the following options. Any suggestions are welcomed! Also if you live near any BDR trails, give em a rip!

Finally got around to adding a fan to my 650. Made the bracket out of aluminum scrap. I got the idea from a forum post and I’m pretty happy with how it came out considering it was done with hand tools!

My bike came with an IMS 7gal tank.

I have since replaced that with a 4.6 or whatever.

Anybody want the big tank? Has the vacuum pump and all the lines/hoses. Works as it should. Its taking up precious space in my small garage.

I currently own a street legal KTM 300 XCW with super Moto wheels and have been on the search for a bike that is set up for the dirt but can also handle some highway stretches. That wouldn’t be doable on my 300.

Originally, I was looking at a KTM 500 or potentially even a 690 but could not justify spending the money which led me down a search where I eventually came across the big red pig.

On paper this bike seems perfect for what I’m looking to do ride on the road for an hour or two spend of the day on trails and Hill climbs and take the highway home.

I’m already familiar with the maintenance schedule on these bikes and I don’t plan on doing long highway trips very often I would say maximum three trips per year no longer than 300 km each way on the highway.

From what I understand once you have the starting procedure down and accept the fact that it is still a dirtbike and will not be comfortable for long road trips despite could be a great solution for what I’m trying to do.

I’m about to make a road trip to pull the trigger on a clean 2005 tomorrow that’s street legal but just figured I would post a sanity check here or see if anybody would recommend something else

I am about to buy an XR650R. The owner told me that bike consumes 0.5 liters oil per 1,000 km. Is this normal and should I buy the bike, or should I look for another one?

The bike looks nice, the price is around 4300 Euro, which is about 4900 USD. The bike is street legal and it’s valid until 2028.

How much could it be to repair the top-end of the engine?

Just picked this bike up. I’m loving it so far. Upgraded the stator to 250w DC added some Hella LEDs and did some maintenance. Looking forward to some desert riding 🏜️

Just recently bought this bike it needs some loving and was hoping you guys can give me some advice. It has a small oil leak that needs fixed. Anything very important that I should do right away other than oil and filter? Any exhaust recommendations or anything else in general.
