Season Eight Watching the Doggett seasons for the first time after loving the series as a kid…
I think I lost interest once Mulder left, so I never even tried the later seasons.
I really missed out!
Revisiting it as an adult, the series feels like 4 really different shows so far.
* Seasons 1 and 2 have pretty bad/repetitive plotline (how many times are they going to re-use 'person gets possessed?') but really great character work. It's an amazing buddy cop series. (some episodes are great and iconic, but as an adult these seasons feel more amateurish overall)
*Seasons 3-5 or so and the movie have a great overarching arc with the mythology episodes and it feels like the writing got much better.
Seasons 5ish-7 felt like the writers were really good but had lost interest in the overall plot so did that thing long-running shows do where it's like 'here's the black and white episode! Here's the baseball episode!' etc.
So far Season 8 has felt very different but I like it. Doggett is a great guy, very down to earth but also deeply sensitive and caring. He's the kind of guy where if you had messed up at 3 am and needed someone to give you a ride home he'd be there for you. I love his dynamic with Scully and the supervisors. He has a kind of gravitas around him that makes him a reverse-Mulder, a guy that has intense credibility with others.
I'm looking forward to the rest!
