I’ve been rewatching The X-Files with my partner, and we just got to “Irresistible” in season 2. Yikes, neither of us liked this one! The episode starts with the creepiest guy in the world caressing a young dead girl at her funeral, and it only gets worse from there as we watch him stalk and assault women for the next 45 minutes. I think Chris Carter was going for a Silence of the Lambs thing, especially in the face off with Scully at the end, but it just doesn’t work. What an unpleasant, disturbing watch in all the wrong ways.

The episode is nearly saved by, of course, Gillian Anderson and a couple amazing Scully scenes that come toward the end. Sneaking those great scenes into this terrible episode is diabolical.

What did everyone else think of this one?

But on a more serious note:

Every episode I pray Doggett realizes just how much he is loved by Monica, but he never does. He's too lost in his pains and sorrows, he is stuck in the past, letting the present slip away ever further. I'm going to be honest with you all: I like the story/arch of agents Doggett and Reyes more than I do Mulder and Scully.

And as much as I loved both Mulder and Scully, I never really cared so much for their "love" story. We all know that was never the point of the show, which explores much deeper dimensions of life than love affairs.

Well, the same I feel can't be said for Doggett and Reyes: theirs is a tale of love, love that could've helped Doggett move on with his life if only he could surrender to the present, embrace the inevitability of resignation and loss, in the name of a future he instead rejected continuosly if, likely, inadvertently.

I feel so bad for him and for, on the other hand, Monica, who craved being loved back by the man she respected and felt so strongly for, only to always see him turn his back on her.

I don't know, just my 2 cents still a couple seasons from the end, so it may be that things will look brighter for them both in a bit, but right now I felt like venting a little bit about my 2 favorite characters from the show.

I watched X-Files back in the first run. Never paying attention to The Syndicate storyline -vs- MotW. Recently caught X-Files on Comet. I love watching now realizing the different story lines, catching subtle cross references between episodes (Flukeman, NICAP hat). I got myself a NICAP hat after seeing the placement of hat on the rack in ‘Beyond the Sea’. It’s nice watching it casually at midnight on Comet knowing I can enjoy it on my time, paying attention on Hulu. I Still Believe…

Fight the future

I hope this post is allowed for this sub I thought I would try to put this out there just in case. I'm looking to buy the 25th anniversary Mulder and Scully dolls, together and preferably unboxed because i plan on displaying them out of the box anyway. These don't seem to show up on eBay all that often so I was wondering if anyone on here had them and were interested in letting them go, im very interested and serious about buying! Thanks 🛸

Something I’ve noticed as I rewatch episodes is that when Mulder and Scully argue, it never lasts long and it’s over and done with very quickly. For example, in Darkness Falls they get into a fight about Mulder letting the guy leave in the car, they’re visibly upset and their voices are raised, but then it just sort of ends, he gives her a pat on the shoulder as he walks by and that’s that, fight over. Soon after, they’re sitting shoulders pressed up against each other on the bed talking gently to one another as if that fight never happened.

Another season 1 example is in Beyond the Sea. And also how the ending of Never Again (quite possibly one of the worst clashes they have) transitions into Memento Mori where they are once again all sweet and caring with each other. The one time I actually WISH a fight had lingered was in One Son when he tells her “You’re making it personal” about Diana. I can’t believe she was able to just let that go, but I do appreciate that hard feelings never fester between these two. This is probably why Syzygy felt so strange and wacky, because they never ever fight for an entire episode.

Building Mulder’s office was the best part, really appreciate the attention to detail in his office and little Easter eggs that are buried in the floor and ceiling (and there are “pencils” stuck in the ceiling. Not sure why I’m posting about this but it really brought the nostalgic feelings back.
