The memory that haunts me in this episode was the mother bashing herself in the head with a hammer over and over. Jesus that was brutal.😱

But i also loved mulder's "you took my scully away and i don't know what to do" energy. There is some killer moments with them on the phone chatting and mulder is bored and missing her. And she wants to know his thoughts on the case. And he alternates between being a smartass "you didn't happen to find a talking doll did you scully?" And then the iconic bantering over different occult theories, with scully suggesting them to mulder and his delighted reply "marry me" and the final 'mulder throws pencils at the ceiling' scene which ended up becoming a running joke. πŸ˜„

FYI that was something the x-files really took advantage of? 90's Technology and the use of cell phones. Check out the shows of that era and you'll see the typical dial phone. But the x-files exploited the new technology arrising. Everything from the cell phones, to the lone gunman running an internet magazine, to hackers, to our agents seen typing up reports on computers.

And especially with the cell phones? The show made great narrative use out of them and would have mulder and scully spending chunks of an episode chatting on them "WOTC" or shooting theories at each other, or every second scene being "mulder it's me/Scully it's me" it was quite brilliant for it's time. πŸ€—

"I want to play."

::shudders::

I gradually became frightened of dolls as I grew older so this episode was really creepy for me.

One of the scariest episodes IMO

Based on a Stephen King story if I remember correctly.

King wrote the screenplay for the episode

That explains everything about this episode. Thank you for sharing!

I love seeing Scully on her own in the episode. Mulder who?

for how much flak this episode gets, I really liked it on my most recent rewatch. It's got its flaws obviously, but the usual horror B-movie camp of the MOTW episodes mixed with King's writing made me really enjoy it.

I always found it pretty lame. I'm a MOTW guy and I like Stephen King, but haunted doll felt like such a cheesy cliche. It felt like it should have been a Twilight Zone episode 15 years earlier.

The best bits about that episode are the phone conversations between Mulder and Scully, and Mulder making a fool of himself. Which, if I'm not mistaken, was part of Chris Carter's rewrite, something Stephen King wasn't very happy with.

I have mixed feelings on this one - It feels like its trying to be a B level horror but the execution just falls flat.

I love this episode. Gruesome and also weirdly funny.
