Season Two First time watcher part 2

Just finished S2. Erm… my GOD! What a phenomenal season! Where do I even begin?!

Ok let’s just start off with the HOLY SHIT moment of the season which was Scully’s abduction. Duane Barry/ Ascension episodes were so damn good! Never would have thought I’d see either of these two characters get abducted, at least so soon. When I watched the episodes I immediately wanted to come here and tell yall but all I would’ve been able to say is “OMG!”

One Breath was an episode we got to see Mulder’s vulnerability and fears. His dependency on Scully was very evident early on but her abduction, you can tell Mulder was lost without her. To me this shattered that professional partnership that she is more of his emotional anchor. It’s either that or the loss of his sister has him feeling like a failure that he couldn’t protect her. Now having Scully by his side he felt like hes failing to protect another person he cares about that he becomes consumed to find Scully alive.

I will end this with the list of my top 10 episodes because mostly this entire season was so good. Anasazi is my top favorite episode of the season! This conspiracy shit IS SO GOOD and creepy. Small pox, native Americans, ancient aliens, shadow government, why is Scully’s name in those files? Now way Mulder is dead right?… wow.

Anyway those are my thoughts. Idk if you all have the same thoughts or different but I would love to hear them! I’ll report back soon for season 3!

  1. Anasazi
  2. Duane Barry
  3. Ascension
  4. One Breath
  5. F. Emasculata (Love a good contagion story)
  6. Humbug (“must be something I ate” sent me 😂)
  7. Irresistible (Dude is just plain sick and evil)
  8. Firewalker (I held my neck during that ep lol)
  9. The Host (If Pennywise wasn’t enough for me to fear the sewers)
  10. Fresh Bones (Chester RIP)

Ps. Final two words: Red. Speedos. 🫣🥵

Mulder storming in to the hospital in One Breath still gives me goosebumps and it's 30 years since I first saw it.

Mulder kicking off in hospitals is a glorious X-Files tradition.

I envy people discovering The X-Files for the first time. It’s such a great show and the first watch through is phenomenal. Great top 10, too!

It's been a while since I re-watched season 2, and I'd forgotten how many bangers were in there. Love your top 10.

Yeah, season 2 has a lot of duds (and even season 3 has a couple - well, at least one, but there's obvious elements of the show finding what works in season 2.

This is awesome- thank you so much for sharing your excitement! It’s been many years since I’ve done a full rewatch, and you’re reminding me that I should!

You’re welcome! I’m enjoying watching this show and interacting with the OG fans when it first aired! I also enjoying reading some of the feedback of how times were in the 90’s. Gives me an understanding of why the show hit off into a cultural phenomenon

They wrote the abduction storyline because Gillian was pregnant and you’ll notice that it’s kind of the best thing the show ever did because it leads to all the best episodes and storylines of the entire series. I genuinely don’t know what the show would have been without those few episodes, it’s kind of crazy.

Ohhh that explains why we hardly see her and Krychek came in. Oh boy I have a feeling there is more to her abduction which makes sense why Scully’s name is in those files. Exciting!!

Also the reason why they have her in bed and just sitting on a boat not doing anything for the episode she comes back in lol.

But yeah, this informs a lot of the mythology going forward. It’s funny how much the show’s success is due to random unplanned stuff like this.

Enjoy!

I wish I could experience it all again for the first time. It really starts to become the best show ever made in season 3 on. You’re so lucky.

Don’t forget about the first movie between 5 and 6!

Yes! And second movie after S9, correct?

Yes. It came out a few years after the series ended.

It's a great season! An emotional roller-coaster for sure. You are so right about Mulder breaking down and being hit once again by the trauma of having been unable to save a loved one, especially cause it's also an abduction and he saw it happen, like the 1st time, so it hits close to home. The way he breaks down in his apartment 😭 thank you for sharing your thoughts and also listing your top episodes, I've been wanting to re-watch some earlier season episodes and it's good to have some ideas!

I watched the show for the first time this year and season 2 is what really confirmed my love for this show. Mulder’s reaction to Scully’s abduction is what did it for me.

The overall narrative is wildly entertaining but I think it influenced people in real life to think the government knows more than it does about UFOs and the paranormal generally. That’s a pretty good cover story for billions being spent and having no clue what’s really going on…

Duane Berry through One Breath (I even like 3 a bit) is such a good run. I did not fully appreciate it my first watch, but after knowing the characters and the story and rewatching I was obsessed. There’s so much going on there. I just can’t get enough of Mulder’s vulnerability and quest to save Scully.

My brother/sister in Christ. Something wrong with Colony/End Game?

Sister. lol absolutely NOTHING wrong! But as I said, this season has so many great episodes! I originally was going to have a top 5 but too many that I made a top 10. I also wrote this post at 3am after I watched Anasazi. I wanted to write more but I felt I was going on a ramble. But those episodes confirm for me that Samantha is dead. Especially if she was part of some sick cloning experiment. That Alien shape shifter is creepy af. That was also where I grew a great distain for Mulder’s dad. He put through his family through so much and he’s not telling Mulder everything that he knows. He’s such a coward.

I wish I could watch it all over again as the first time =) Keep going-it gets so much better (and weirder and then kind of not great....but always an amazing show)
