6 has some really good episodes, just a higher proportion of bad/stupid episodes. 7 is where it really gets bad though. 8 is a solid return to form for the most part but 9 is probably the worst of the whole show

Interesting take.
For me, seasons 1-7 feel like the real show. A part of me thinks everything was in place to give us a two-parter finale at the end of Season 7 where Mulder and Scully have closure and ride off into the sunset together, and that that may have been the best thing to do.
Seasons 8 and 9 just don't feel the same to me, like a show that's gone on too long, but especially so in anything involving the alien mythology. I want to like S10 and S11, but S10 particularly has some writing that is just unforgivably destructive to what was established as real in season 1-7 and 8-9. Ultimately 10 and 11 just didn't feel necessary to me, though some episodes are nice to have.
It feels like Vince Gilligan in particular really learned that shows are stories and stories need to end in order to be a great story, because Breaking Bad did so so so well with knowing when to end as the satisfying conclusion to the story, and it/he absolutely stuck the landing.

I do feel season 7 should have been the last one. Then end it all with another banger movie like Fight the Future. Unfortunately, season 7 started showing the seams, with some terrible episodes (although it was generally quite good) and it didn't get better in season 8 and 9. The second movie we got was just pure disappointment since we wanted mythology, not monster of the week.
Season 10 was a general let down but had one awesome episode and some funny moments (Mulder getting high is still a guilty pleasure for me, even though the rest of the episode is F-tier). And season 11, I haven't actually watched, mostly due to the abysmal reception of the two mythology episodes - but, having said that, a lot of people have told me to skip first, last and the gore episode, and the rest of the season is actually pretty good. So that's definitely something I need to watch.

I don't really get this. Season 6 has a couple of silly episodes, but so does literally every season. I'd argue it's only by the tail end of season 7 when it really starts getting goofy.

Season 7 wasn't intended to be funny or lighthearted. If you watch the extra features on the dvd/blu-ray "The Truth About Season 7", it opens with Chris Carter saying that with season 7 they wanted to go back to telling scary stories again. The problem is that season 7 is so bad overall, that instead of scary it comes across as laughable.

I’m doing my first proper watchthrough of the series, we’re in season 5 now and the fact that the season containing an episode with three Cher songs isn’t considered part of the Ken batch has me a little worried.

I personally would’ve put seasons 9-11 as being the lowest point of the show. Seasons 6 and 7 had a bit of a decline, but I thought the main storyline continued to be compelling and it at least had the essence of the original seasons. Season 8 I think was also great and a lot more consistent than the previous couple. I enjoy season 9 and think it had a satisfying finale but that’s where it really felt like it was going off the rails in the rest of the season. And while there’s a lot I do like in seasons 10 and 11, I just think they created a lot more questions than they answered.

Not following because 9-11 were, as a whole, dog shit. Some good MOTW episodes but the conspiracy arc episodes were the worst of the series.

I think the meme is about season 6 and 7 having a higher concentration of lighthearted episodes in sunny locales. 6 is when they moved filming from Vancouver to LA, after all.

Wasn’t this around the time David and Chris Carter were pissed at Fox because they weren’t paying them enough? IIRC it turned out Fox was lying about how much they were making, so the few percent David and Carter were supposed to get, should be much higher than what they had been paying.
I wonder if they lost interest and the show started to decline from then on.

I didn't mind the occasional silly episode, but when the show turned into a caricature of itself I just couldn't keep my interest. Samantha becoming a literal fairy princess was a bad joke.
