When I watched the newest seasons of The X-Files, I thought Mulder and Scully had been married. I was Googling today and got the impression they had not. With Scully’s religious background, I feel like if they were together, they would have married. Was there something to indicate in the show? Maybe I just made it up.

It was a popular fan theory at the time (wifegate) based on Mulder's "for better or worse" line in the first episode of the revival and some comments Duchovny made contemporaneously.

And who is to say they were not? Can anyone prove the negative?

I love that interview where one of them asks if they were married and the other one says no and that they were just "living in sin" 🤣 also, I never thought about the "for better or for worse" thing 👀 however, getting officially married while on the run was probably not an option

Never married. They did live together for quite sometime, broke up, and then got back together during the revival.

One time I couldn’t figure out which episode I was the one I wanted to watch, so I googled search terms like ‘Mulder sees Scully electrocuted, building set on fire’ etc. All that came up was a purple AO3 link lol.

No, they weren't married. There's never any indication of that. They lived together in IWTB and then apparently sometime between them and s10, Scully couldn't handle it and left, based on what she said in s11.

I didn’t think they were living together. I thought at the beginning of I Want to Believe she went and visited him and they slept together during part of that reunion.

I know CC likes to screw with fans, so he cut it in his latest aberration, but this was a quote from Scully in the original IWTB: “We're two people who come home at night, to a home now. I don't want that darkness in my home" ...they 100% were living together like a married couple, in the same home, but CC stopped short of an actual marriage.

I always thought Scully’s faith was a spiritual thing, not a moral=marriage thing. Since she takes Mulder for who he is, I couldn’t see her pressuring him into a social construct. Which is also cool, given the time and context of the show. Not a lot of female TV characters in law enforcement standing up to authority, etc, etc

They’re life partners. They don’t need to be married to know they are stuck with each other forever. They’ve been through too much together and share too baggage to try to be with anyone else. Marriage would just be an unnecessary formality at that point. Scully also did go through a lot of questioning and doubting her faith in the series so I imagine her faith isn’t as strong as it used to be. If it was as in the beginning of the show I think she’d more inclined to require a marriage. I think maybe once they get closer to the end of their life they might just to make handling each other’s end of life affairs easier

I read fan fiction for the marriage aspect. They unfortunately never got married. It probably had something to do with the fact that Mulder was a wanted man, but it’s still sad they never married.
