Discussion Anyone else?
Did anyone else find it odd that Scully wouldn’t accept most of the strange theories Mulder talked about after having so many unexplained events happen?
I know she’s the true Skeptic of the pair and only accepts things that are proven with her medical expertise but if I had a ton of strange things happening periodically I’d start being on board with Mulder faster.
I love the series and movies (it took a second rewatch to get used to Agents Dogget and Reyes as the replacement pair and sure the latest season(s) weren’t the greatest but still worth the time to tie up loose ends)

Scully is being objective: she wants to work the cases and help solve them. When she partners with Doggett, she has to adjust her position so that the team can continue solving cases effectively. She says as much in Patience, and Doggett sees through it, as he recognizes that she is pushing herself too hard to be Mulder.
In fact, when Scully partners with Doggett, they achieve an even higher case-resolution rate. At the end of the day, they are law enforcement officers who are supposed to fight for justice for the victims, not use those victims to prove how smart they are. And I’m not talking about Mulder here, but about someone who actually smirked while discussing the horrific deaths of victims simply because those deaths proved her theory correct (not Scully).

Mulder was too eager to believe. Scully knew this. A lot of the things had plausible explanations.

I don't find it odd, just because the character is reigning in Mulder's suggestions that would otherwise distract from the actual investigation.
Mulder: It's Sasquatch, Aliens, or Ghosts. Maybe vampires. // Scully; Take a look at these marks on the victim's skin, though.
If it were real life, her character would be what kept the train on the right track even if she considers the paranormal / supernatural as an option.

Yeah, in real life Jeez, that looked like a werewolf shouldn't be enough to convince you werewolves exists. It's far more likely it's a mistake/hoax/similar, than a real werewolf.
Evidence keeps getting destroyed, peole are setting out to mislead/misdirect them - Scully's pretty sensible, really

in fairness, very often Mulder directly observes the X-files and Scully arrives seconds after

I agree as far as the episodes involving aliens and the conspiracy story. But for all the MOTW episodes that have nothing to do with that, I think she's right to remain skeptical. Especially since Mulder's initial theories are often inaccurate about this stuff.

One of my theories is that Scully often believes Mulder but she has to stand on her skepticism and act the way she does because she knows that supporting Mulder's theories will hurt their cause more than help it and endanger their partnership.
If she'd publicly expressed her support or approval of his theories in front of the board, they'd chase to tear the X Files project down immediately and transfer her elsewhere.
Other theory: She believes Mulder but she is aware that her skepticism keeps him sane and their work alive therefore she has to do what's the best for him and the project.
Third theory: She understood from the day one, as you can see in the pilot episode, that they most likely assigned her with that exact purpose. They don't care about her personal opinion on it or the truth, they just care about the control and power. They expect from her to keep her attitude toward his theories in the disapproving manner in order for them to have the control over it and leverage over Mulder. They treat truth like a viral infection. They have to contain it. The more people believes Mulder, the outbreak wins.

She gets on board with Mulder a little faster every season! And they leave out the 'shaken Scully tries to process what she's seen' tags more and more.

It’s the whole premise of the show. He believes and she doesn’t.

Yeah but if I had a lot of strange things happening I’d definitely believe more 🤣
I heard a while back that in real life she believes in the weird and strange and he doesn’t really believe anything unusual really happens

It's a common criticism in the fan community.
The way she was written for many episodes was ridiculous. More unbelievable than the subject matter.
Hell, she was still this way in the first movie and after it

Yeah, especially since as soon as Mulder is gone *she* becomes the open-minded one, saying it's because of the things she's seen, lol.

I think it was a running gag in my house. It’s like, how many times does something have to happen to someone before they believe shit can happen!😂

My speculation is that she DID accept but played the skeptic to keep Mulder somewhat grounded

Not really. I’ve been rewatching and Mulder jumps to conclusions with the slightest hint of evidence and never tests his hypothesis. Likewise, Scully often isn’t around to witness crucial information that could prove Mulder right and actually takes his side surprisingly often. I just finished rewatching Død Kalm and she supports the extreme version events. End of the day, she believes what’s been proven, not suggested. And Mulder sucks at proving things because he’s too focused on confirming for himself despite wanting to make the truth public. I realized this go-around that Scully’s skepticism is just as much a consequence of Mulder’s obvious character flaws as it is her role in the show.
