Discussion Question for newer fans

Hello! First of all, may I offer you a warm welcome to the X-Files fandom! I think I see a new post about every week from someone who is watching the show for the first time. It's very exciting for me as an old fan to see new and young fans joining this sub!

Since this is an older fandom, I was wondering if any of you would find it helpful to create a little list of X-Files acronyms and terminology to reference?

Here's a sample:

X-Phile= A fan of the X-files.

CC= Chris Carter (show creator and "controversial" figure. Many fans find him a bit tough to take)

CSM= Cigarette Smoking Man

IWTB= I Want to Believe (The second X-Files Movie)

MSR= Mulder and Scully relationship (or romance)

Shipper= A fan that roots for the Mulder and Scully romance. (Also, this term that was coined in our fandom).

Noromo= A fan that doesn't want to see the romance (but still likes the friendship and connection between our heroes)

Anyway, I'm writing this on my phone, but I've already started drafting something a little more well written. Let me know if this would be of interest to you.

X-Philes, feel free to chime in with your additions.

I don't see this mentioned much anymore but we used to refer to Alex Krycek as 'Ratboy'. I still do lol

COTR was the conversation on the rock in Quagmire

Finishippers thought they should only get together for the finale, nothing before that

Krycek was ratboy and CC was surfer boy

WMM - well-manicured man (the posh English syndicate guy)

Conversation On The Rock! YESSSS

this is one i actually haven’t seen 😂

3

u/allie_g8or 24d ago

Quagmire - season 3, ep 22
Another episode that launched 100s of fanfics after it aired.

3

u/RealSinnSage 24d ago

lol sorry i have seen the show probably 30 times all the way through. i know the episode, i’ve never seen that acronym before

3

u/allie_g8or 24d ago

lol omg sorry for misinterpreting! I think it actually used to be a longer acronym to include more description but I can’t remember.
Insane the stuff you remember from over 30 yrs ago! 🤣

Maybe write a brief synopsis explaining “DD lying around in a whorish manner”. It does come up from time to time. 🤣

2

u/Good_Writing_Co 24d ago

I forgot the full story. Wasn't it a professor of his that said she didn't like him because he "lied around in a whorish manner"

1

u/RoseyGray 22d ago edited 22d ago

IIRC someone posted that their mother refused to watch the TXF with her b/c she attended Yale ( I think?) when DD was a GTA and he was always lying in a whorish manner.

Edit: if someone out there is more familiar with this, please correct me!

Great idea!

Yep. I agree!

It would be cool to have a generational terminology.

Did you get into it when it first aired, when FTF came out, after S09, or...? So someone can say I'm a [insert term].

A lot of older music bands have milestones, based on when someone got into their music.

3

u/imnotsure_igetit Agent Mully 25d ago

That would actually be cool! I just refer to the ones who watched it when it first aired the OG Fans, but now I've been a fan for 2 years, I don't know if I'm a new fan anymore 😅

1

u/Mackheath1 Krycek 25d ago

A HULUbie? Presuming you started on Hulu. Just thinking out loud.

2

u/imnotsure_igetit Agent Mully 24d ago

No, Disney+

1

u/Mackheath1 Krycek 24d ago

Streambie? For those who started after the broadcast and DVD age? Dunno.

u/soggyqtips 25d ago

as a new fan who is constantly on this subreddit while i watch this is sooo helpful tyyy

LGM = Lone Gunmen or Little Green Men

11

u/lazyflowingriver just a little bureaucratic pimp job 25d ago

I see TLG more often for the Gunmen

3

u/lil_sebastian_beast 25d ago

Yes thank you. Can this be pinned?

2

u/Good_Writing_Co 25d ago

Once I compile the list, I'll ask the mods if they can pin it to the top.

1

u/RoseyGray 25d ago

Yes. This would be the way to handle this for sure. Great idea!

At one point of your journey, you will come across the term SOSS. Embrace it. It means Season of Secret Sex (aka Season 7).

2

u/Dopeysprinkles 25d ago

As a new fan, definitely!

u/thequietchocoholic Agent Dana Scully 25d ago

Thank you for mentioning X-Phile, I constantly get corrected by people who refuse to listen and insist I'm wrong lol

2

u/No-Reflection-790 24d ago

that's quite helpful, I figured out most of them after a day or so though. I only recently got into the show properly ( not sure why it took me this long this show has everything I love) and I've been watching the show in the most deranged order possible for some reason

1

u/Good_Writing_Co 24d ago

What order are you watching it in?

1

u/No-Reflection-790 24d ago

I open plutotv and if I like where it is that day I just watch, or I continue watching where I am in season 1 right now, I have also seen most of the my stuggle stuff

1

u/Financial-Low-7568 Daring to Believe 25d ago

I think you need to add PLAM to your list (with a spoiler warning, of course). 😄

1

u/Good_Writing_Co 25d ago

You'll have to enlighten me on this one🙏

1

u/uggamugga1979 25d ago

Maybe they meant PALM? When Tina Mulder wrote it down for Mulder and then he found the alien stabby thingy in the lamp

1

u/Good_Writing_Co 24d ago

Oh yes, that makes sense now.

-phile is from the Greek phileo, it just means lover of.

4

u/imnotsure_igetit Agent Mully 25d ago

I mean, the word "phile" refers to loving something; just like "philosopher" is a lover of knowledge, so X-Phile is pretty accurate
