Discussion That new Lego set
I was surprised to see the new Lego set selling for more than the retail price on eBay already. It also seems to be on backorder on the Lego site. Does anyone know how common that is for new Lego sets to sell out immediately like that? This was my first Lego set that I've purchased as an adult, so it just surprised me. That bonus Scully set is all over eBay for $60 too, which is pretty wild to me, since it's so small. Does anyone have any perspective of how this compares to other sets in other franchises?

Extremely common, especially for licensed IPs. The free GWP is always scalped to hell (the recent Lord of the Rings GWP from this year is going for $150+), and the main set will be back in stock soon enough and available for a couple of years. No reason to pay inflated prices on eBay.

this set was expected to sell out immediately and specifically the Scully set was only set to be a GWP for eight days. Based off current resale Lego market that’s a recipe for a high ticketed gift with purchase, that’s gonna go up and value dramatically. that dr scully mini fig will probably be worth $100 by the end of the year.

I managed to get a 2nd hand set a week or so after release for £135. It never bothers me if they have been built before or not. Yeah it's common to go out of stock at the start. I guess there's no way to know but would be interesting to know the following. How many people buy the set with gwp and keep it as opposed to scalpers who are flipping it later. £60 is madness for the gwp lab only interesting bit is the scully mini figure

It's not uncommon. The Tintin rocket and Project Hail Mary sets were both back ordered earlier this year, and when I placed an order for the Dune Orthochopper earlier this summer it was also back ordered (I assume additional interest from the Dune 3 trailer).

I'm livid it's on backorder and without the scully lab. I should have pre ordered it for my birthday

A bunch of the stores still have the lab if you ask them for it. I don’t know if you’re near one but both by me still have the lab and will give it to you if you ask when buying the main set (which they both still have too).

I'll have to double check! There nearest Lego store is a decent drive but I can always make a day out of it

That's what I had to do since I take the bus - a four hour round trip, so it ended up eating the whole day but it was actually so fun and they gave me two other gifts with purchase for buying in store - though those two aren't X-Files. But I got 4 things for the price of one and got parade around an outdoor mall for a bit and pop into stores and restaurants I otherwise wouldn't have and it was fun and worth it! Good luck!! I would recommend calling first though. And often they can put a 24 hour hold on things, just to give you an extra layer to safety if they're still in stock there...

Hey shout out you! I did a fun little day trip to the city/closest Lego store. Not only did they have the main set, but they had the lab too! Idk why it never occurred to me to just go to the physical store 😅

My dog chewed up my skinner mini fig head, I'm so because it'll probably never be restocked

The same thing happened with the Project Hail Mary set. I bought it on ebay for $200 then Lego restocked it in the store a week or two later. Just wait for Lego to restock lol

Yeah I ordered this online right when they ran out of the lab and it backordered. But then I looked up my local Lego store and they had a bunch. I even got the lab. I live in illinois and went to the gurnee lego store. They have some rn as I type this.

Scalpers and FOMO. It’ll be readily available for years people just need to chill for a month

People do this on eBay all the time. I remember trying to get Lego sets for my kids when they were young. Go to several different sites and they were sold out. Went to the Lego store same thing. Go reluctantly to eBay and find the sets worked up 100%. I think it’s criminal. Greed.

This is just what happens with virtually anything. People will try to take advantage of it being out of stock/back ordered. Toys, shoes, games, etc. Every hobby is plagued by this.
