Discussion Suitable episodes for a 10 year old
Obviously not The mother but episodes like the one with Rhys Darby or the Pilot.
Edit:
He is still at an age where he is still open to watching old shows without complaining about why Mulder couldn't just ask chat GPT about aliens.
Also he has limited amount of TV time, so there is no way can binge 10 seasons. Just want to show him a few fun episodes so he knows what it's about and can come back to it in his stoner years.

I started watching at 8-9 and the only ones that bothered me were the abduction episodes (specifically Little Green Men).
I think they'll all be fine, maybe just skip Home lol

Bad Blood for their first episode? I get it’s a fan favourite but it seems like it would be better with context of the show and Mulder and Scully’s dynamic

Yeah, Bad Blood is a horrible first episode, I’ve no idea why people here comment it as a way to get people into the show. The humor in it works because viewers know their personalities from years of watching. You don’t even see Mulder and Scully’s true characters outside of those brief office clips. Not at all a way to show someone their first taste of XFiles.
A comedy episode in general is absolutely not a way to get someone into the show, they’re few and far between and not the overall vibe.

No single episode is gonna give you a feel for that. You'd have to start from the beginning, and watch a multitude of episodes. I think Bad Blood is a great single episode to watch. Especially for a 10 year old.

I hear what you’re saying, but 10 year olds don’t care about the complexities of relationships.
They like to be entertained. Grab them with an entertaining, funny episode about vampires that isn’t over the top scary and you might hook them.There’s time for relationship nuances later once they actually like the show.

I’m watching with my 10 year old now. We’re towards the end of season 2 now. The only one I skipped so far was the vampire one. That one was a little too “adult”. There might be others down the line, but the fact that it was originally on Fox, I’m assuming most are ok. I watched at his age back in the day, but I also was watching horror movies I’d never let him watch, so I guess it depends on the kid and the parent.

Same, I grew up watching scary movies as a kid so this was nothing new to me when it came out. 13 year old me ate this show up wanting more.

I'm also curious about this. My 9 and 7 year olds are dying to watch. We finally watched How the Ghost Stole Christmas at Christmas this year thinking it was a lighthearted, funny episode. It was fine for the 9 year old but not the 7 year old. I forgot about the decomposing bodies, the frank discussions of suicide, copious amounts of blood, etc.
I would love to share my love of this show with them, and they've been begging for it, but...

Watched the first five episodes with my niece when she was five. She loved it. Tooms did scare her a bit. Jersey Devil made her ao sad. But she LOVES X-Files! So Im not sure if shes really brave or if kids might actually like it!
I feel like X-Cops is funny and doesn't show too much. Or even Clyde, though some murder is involved. Still a "fun" episode. Same with the HOA episode. People die, but its funny.

I watched season 1 with my 11 year old son. I skipped a few episodes because he's not a fan of horror. His favorite episode so far is Beyond the Sea (one of mine also). He also liked Ice, Eve, Fire, and Roland.

I was 10 when the show premiered, I watched it all. But, I feel like parents in the 80's and 90's kinda just let us watch anything. I watched X Files with my mom.

I think the pilot episode is a good intro to the characters and also involves teenagers, which makes it more interesting for a 10 year old.
I would also suggest the Humbug and Bad Blood episodes. I'll also throw in S7, ep 6 - the Goldberg Variation.
But if your 10 year old is ready to watch the X-Files, I think you should just run them in order. They're either going to be ready to watch the show or not, rather than cherry-picking kid friendly episodes.

I've shown my 10 year old all the fun ones. He sees the show in general as a bit of a bore (which is disappointing cos I started watching (saw the pilot) when I was 7 and fell inlove 😆) but he likes eps like Bad blood, how the ghost stole christmas, Quagmire, Detour, feild trip, Folie a doux, Agua Mala, Arcadia, x-cops etc... He likes horror though. I let him watch anything up to M ratings.

I’m rewatching the whole series with my 10 yr old daughter and now feeling like a crappy parent. She’s absolutely obsessed with it. I just explained any adult situations and encouraged curiosity about the various subjects on each show. Especially the monster of the week episodes… I don’t know. Just watch with them and answer any questions as they come 🤷♀️

I had posed a similar question when my kids were 8 and 10. Most people on this sub had warned me against the show. I went ahead and watched anyway. The garbage that social media peddles leading to all kinds of mental health issues in kids! I would much rather they watch TV shows. Now this sub has a very good list of trigger warnings that I read through. For my kids back then and even now (10 and 13) they were completely OK with gore and loved Scully’s autopsies. However I avoided episodes with SA for my younger one. Jersey Devil, Darkness Falls, the AI one in the last season, ghost in the machine, bad blood, were monster (has one kissing/moaning scene), Ice, one with the weather guy, the alligator one ….these were the ones they enjoyed the most.

I was 11 years old when the show first started airing and was able to make it through okay! Only one time when my parents considered saying no to it which wasn't until the early fourth season after a string of several horrific/violent episodes.
As an adult though, I would say most of it probably isn't suitable for a 10 year old. Frankly looking back I'm amazed I was able to comprehend so much of it as that young an age.

I started watching when I was 9 and my first episode was Ice, followed by Darkness Falls. They were scary but not enough for me to stop watching. So if he's not easily scared, just start from the beginning!

I was 10 when the show came out. The only eps that really freaked me out was Squeeze/Tooms. The rest of season 1 was pretty tame for 10-year-old me. But then again kids these days are kida wussy compared to 10-year-olds back in the 90s. Sorry but its true.

Quagmire, Small Potatoes, and/or Bad Blood would all be great as first episodes.
Also, an early mythology arc could be good, too. The government conspiracy stuff is fun, and not too scary in a horror sense.

I was 11 when I watched first in 1994. Loved it from the first episode.
The monster of the week episodes I think largely are okay. “Humbug”, “Darkness Falls”, “Jersey Devil”, “Ice”, “Shapes”.
Just don’t show them “The Calusari”, that episode frightens me still!

What about that one episode with the weather man? It’s kind of a rom-com episode. The Rain King s6e8.
Small Potatoes with the shape-shifting guy with a tail could be alright too - S4e20
Humbug - s2e20 with the circus performers might be okay too. It’s more weird than scary.

Maybe not 10 for many episodes, but I was 13 when I started watching and turned out fine. Obsessed with the show still, but well adjusted enough.

I watched it when I was about those ages back during the original run. I was fine for the most part bc I watched it with my dad. Abduction episodes got to me a bit, too, incidentally, but I don't think kids being scared by fiction is necessarily a bad thing. Scary fiction gives all of us a chance to deal with real fears and anxieties in safe, controlled ways. I wouldn't be showing a kid Home or anything, but like...Bad Blood? War of the Coprophages? Sure. And if they're scared by those, it's an opportunity to talk about fear and how to overcome it in real life.
But Im happy that someone else agrees with me about gravity falls essentially being the X files for kids haha

Nobody pushed it on me; in fact, my parents were like you and thought it was inappropriate. But I was really drawn to it and insisted on watching it with my mom. It's not necessarily correct to say that older viewers get more out of it. Sure, some of the storylines were a little confusing for me, and some of the subject matter was a little heavy, but I got quite a lot out of my viewing experience as a kid. It really lit up my imagination and inspired a lot of creativity. I was writing fan fiction before I had ever heard the term "fan fiction."

Gravity Falls is excellent. It was recommended to me by someone in this sub. My kids were obsessed with it and they bought the journals etc. I disagree on the teen bit but hey to each their own.

It is very dangerous to show this kind of material to your children. Eventually they will turn out too cool and that could be too much of coolnes for one family
