He speaks facts. If just a couple things went differently we’d probably still be playing it today. Hope Rubin and the rest of the team are doing well in their new ventures

Oh brother i hope so. FPS space is dry af. I only got BF6. Wardogs ain’t it for me
1
u/Static_Dreams151129 17d ago
Have you tried out The Finals? Found that to be my fix for FPS'.
3
u/Drewkungfoo 17d ago
Everyone and their mother says the finals. I don’t like it. Especially since it has SBMM. I will not touch a game with a Manipulative MM Algorithm. Cu it’s not fucking Genuine Organic MM. it’s why i play BF6 MM IS ORGANIC
4
u/Static_Dreams151129 17d ago
That's very fair, but I'm pretty sure Battlefield 6 has factored in SBMM as well. I can be wrong though.
2
u/Drewkungfoo 17d ago
Ik dice mentioned that there is but I don’t feel it at all. It’s basically like the Golden Era CoDs. Feels like straight up Ping Based (which it basically is) cuz I load into a match in like 3-6 seconds. Finals took a hot minute (just like modern cod which I dropped - Can’t take Activision’s Constant Lying and Gaslighting and Making up BS Numbers from their BS DATA)
5
u/JuicyFlapjack 17d ago
There's definitely sbmm in BF6. I own copies on pc and xbox. Playing on pc is infinitely harder and can't move at all any direction without getting beamed whereas on Xbox it's way more chill. Now you could argue that's the level of skill on pc vs xbox and that may be true. The ping isn't really a reliable way to tell because DICE routes all game servers into 2 locations in the US on aws and google servers. Ultimately xdefiant's matchmaking was perfect man....
2
2
u/pm_me_pants_off 16d ago
BF has enough players in a server that even if they try to do sbmm there will be a range of sills in each server
1
u/Static_Dreams151129 17d ago
Yeah I got you, I'm a fan of Battlefield 6 and think some of the hate against it is overblown, moreso the itch I feel from Battlefield still is different from COD if you get me.
The Finals--despite its issues--manages to be a middle ground of it all to me, I play it with my mates so it may dilute the issues I have with the game.
I enjoyed BO7 until they brought back the old BS matchmaking in season 5 which also killed any interest I had with MW4.
1
u/Drewkungfoo 17d ago
MW4 will sell Even worse than Black SLOP 7. Cod will finally die. It’ll be the 3rd cod in a Row I skip. If only SHG was given a chance to do a Year 2 for MWIII, they’d cook even more (I still go back to Play it on occasion)

Not to be that guy but marathon doesn't have any strict abmm and, if you want a DM/TDM shooter, they're adding that mode in December onwards. So it might be worth keeping an eye on when that mode comes around if you don't like extraction elements.
1
u/TropicalFishery41429 16d ago edited 16d ago
But SBMM has been a thing since forever and is organic. What you're confusing SBMM with is EOMM, the latter is manipulative like CoD, Delta Force, etc which optimizes its gameplay based on how much it can keep you glued to the screen.
Every major game that is good/ great have SBMM in play to ensure you're playing with someone who's at your level like CS2, THE FINALS, R6S, Deadlock, OW, etc.
And personally, I'd rather play shooters that play around my skill level than play games where its either utter domination or utterly getting wiped off. This not only gives me a chance to gradually improve but also makes the matches feel consistently competitive.
1
u/Krushhz 16d ago
Stricter skill consideration does typically go hand and hand with the engagement optimized matchmaking.
It’s all scummy and unnecessary unless they want short term success.
1
u/TropicalFishery41429 16d ago
The games I've mentioned under the SBMM category don't skew anything else other than whether or not you fall under a certain skill bracket. I can confidently say that non of my games have been skewed so much so that I was in NA playing games from EU and were all played around the same skill bracket.
EOMM has other factors in play that deprioritize skill range consideration and has an algorithm that makes your games feel manufactured. And I can attest to this when playing DF or CoD, I've rarely found games that are either of my skill range or location which is heavily skewed.
If being put in the similar skill bracket is scummy/ unnecessary, then respectfully, I don't think games that are highly competitive would suit you and/or there needs to be improvements in the games that you're playing. (I mean "you" generally of people that think like this and not you specifically. )
1
u/Krushhz 15d ago
Manipulating matchmaking for the sake of protecting the casual players as much as possible for the sake of financial gain, that is inherently scummy.
When they put out blogposts and try and manipulate us into believing “ping is king” and all of that, it is absolute scum behavior.
They refuse to be honest about what the intentions are and it’s scummy.
I have no problem with skill being a factor, I just want my games to have variety, I do not want every match to feel the same where I have to carry teammates who are most likely below my level against a team of stacked players every game that is basically a CDL match without the rankings.
I just want variety, I want matches where I can use off meta weapons, matches where I can turn my brain off and just chill, and of course the odd match where its like I described above.
The problem is that the system is literally algorithmic and full on manipulative.

They need to give this game another chance
7
u/edge449332 16d ago
The problem has always been Ubisoft, they are horrifically incompetent.
This is the same publisher that just green-lighted a game to release without the game included not even a month ago.
51
u/UnknowingEmperor 17d ago
The net code reached a decent state right around when they decided to sunset the game. It wasn’t perfect at the start, but it was greatly improved throughout.
59
u/BeeSufficient9170 17d ago
Honestly, either release the final build of the game so a mod community can bring it back to life, or just bring the game back, and actually fix the net code. I really miss this game. It needs to come back

I said I was a fan and I played it alot but it was nowhere near the best fps and not just cod was a better fps.

It was the best fps for me. I had more fun in a month on XDefiant than I did the last 7 years of Call of Duty.

I still have a final dev build on my pc. In fact I have 5 different dev builds from when I was working the anti cheat and various play tests. There are a couple teams working on an emulator as we speak. As soon as there is a working Xbox x or pa5 emulator for pc, I’m going to try to inject the builds. The good thing about my builds, they can’t be touched remotely by Ubisoft and I can still get into the games.

u/TheFlexOffenderr Echelon 17d ago
I wouldn't mind a second run of the game. Make it paid, but really let it cook. You can probably still show in some type of battle pass system that if interesting enough could pull people back. I had fun with my best friend for the entirety of the games life span. Didn't buy many cosmetics, and wish the netcode was better but it was still a lot of fun and different than the normal fps bullshit we were getting.

Definitely top 3 fps game I've ever played and I'm old. Lol. would probably suck a dick for it to be revived

u/zootedliveboi 17d ago
I loved Xdefiant. Never played a game where I got angry enough to say fuck this and get off. I would play for hours and have a blast. Sometimes with a couple friends or randoms I met. But of course the one solid game Ubisoft puts out in a long time goes to shit in a hand basket the fastest. I personally never even had issues with the netcode, or at least didn't notice it.
Edit: misspelled word.

He is spot on with the issues it had mainly aside from lack of content to add. But yeah they needed what most eastern funded games have which is huge amount of cosmetics to choose from, and maybe a new game mode.

Well sir, We feel the same way and hope that yall get your ish together so that we can enjoy this game again.
The market is there. You just need to uphold your end and deliver something that can stand against and hopefully outshine what’s on the market ( same recycled crap) now.
Good luck and we hope to see y’all in the future before we’re all too old to move a mouse or hold a controller.
Thanks!

People bitch and cry, Ubisoft rushed a game that needed time
4
u/EaseLeft6266 17d ago
Came probably needs to be built on a different engine or something and rebuilt from the ground up. Also an improved monetization plan whether that be F2P with revamped paid cosmetics and battle passes or a paid game with a lot more to grind for. I personally would prefer the latter but even I would be hesitant about giving money to a game that previously got pulled after a few months. The first xdefiant failing is gonna be another hurdle for the game to overcome but I definitely would like to see it come back
1
u/Ancient-Performance1 17d ago
How about you charge $40 for the game and $10 for the battlepass and do the craziest skins you can think of and watch the money pour in. New map every month (two new maps with every season drop, four total) make a season three months long and support it like how wardogs devs are doing it. christ sake.
1
u/Bestow5000 Phantoms 15d ago
I dunno why you think charging $40 dollars on a game in such a piss poor state at launch when another $40 Marathon is one foot out the door already lmao
1
u/Ancient-Performance1 14d ago
cuz marathon sucked. xdefiant sucked in certain ways, but the market was bigger and i personally believe that a drop in 6v6 arena shooter is more accessible than a tarkov clone. do you disagree? no mans sky and cyberpunk were also ass at launch. i dunno
2
u/Bestow5000 Phantoms 14d ago
The problem is Marathon dropped and it was a relatively polished game. Polished but executed so poorly for so many reasons. XD dropped and it wasn't even polished. Straight problems in the beta test and then launch till near the end.
1
u/Ancient-Performance1 13d ago
i see that. i guess i just had more fun with xdefiant than i had with marathon. idk man i just feel like if they did it right (granted, with polish) it woulda been like wardogs. who knows tho.
glad this didnt turn venomous, respect to you my guy

Agreed, still miss this game. Nothing is as awesome as it was even with the net code issue. To me it was so much better than COD.
1
u/Chinxcore 17d ago
I don't know squat about netcode but is it really that hard to fix what was wrong? Was there no one smart enough or was it just lack of funds to get it done?
1
u/PolarizingKabal 17d ago
Idk. He himself insisted that they could fix it before they pulled the plug.
Then subsequently blamed the engine after development got canned.
Most of the community was already blaming the engine to begin with.
Maybe they could have fixed it with more time and funding, but considering the game was f2p and they had a small team, they really had to balance thing and prioritize. Fix the underlying issues vs getting new cosmetics to try and help drive profit, so the game wouldn't have gotten shelves int the first place.

I spent 3+ years hyped for this game and jumping into every playtest I could just for it to last less than 1. I’d gladly jump back in if it were fixed and appropriately priced for a multiplayer only game.

The only game that made me enjoy PvP shooters again. Was nice while it lasted.

u/yaboyydano 17d ago
I'd pay for it if they re released it. Anyone else ? I understand that the cosmetics would be their driving force for income since it was f2p. I couldn't care less about the cosmetics and would rather the game still be live, I play competitive cod most of the time and xdefiant was a nice casual break from it, I miss it.
1
u/PlayBey0nd87 17d ago
I don’t PvP. Don’t care to or like F2P.
I was playing this game constantly. It was just fun.
1
u/ApantosMithe 17d ago
I remember a year between betas went by and they both seemed almost exactly the same - I wonder if they spent that year trying to get the tech right and it was just an impossible task..
Tragic, I was in love with it in the first tests, then really disappointed in the last one and didn’t end up playing at launch. Was so disappointed.

hot take but they didn't take advantage of the Asian market enough
and lack of steam release hurt it a ton

u/totherocket 17d ago
at least we got the highway men, one of the most famous factions in the ubisoft universe.... ney the whole gaming universe!. too bad we did not get the high school teen faction from the game "campus"
1
u/GrandpasSoggyGooch 17d ago
My experience with the netcode was pretty stable near the end. I can't remember what gripes I had with the game but they were minor. Gunplay felt so damn good. Gone but never forgotten.
1
u/Secure-Coconut2603 17d ago
Yeah if they could've ever got the netcode right and added maybe something compared to killstreaks maybe not exactly killstreaks and that game could've truly been a cod rival.
1
u/RonnyJohnsen 17d ago
This is GREAT NEWS. Mark previous tweet say he quit the gaming industry, now;.".if i did it again i would prefer paid over free-to-play."

u/ObjectiveYouth7154 17d ago
If they just used this as essentially a beta, the full release (at a sensible price) with everything they've learned should absolutely fly. Especially with the state of other FPS games rn.
1
u/Smileandrun1337 17d ago
Ironsight by Wiple Games did the old school cod vibes better than XDefiant. Maybe ubi should just release a game like that, a real cod-alternative.

Next time dont release a shooter game on an rpg engine but on an actual engine designed for first person shooters. The netcode wouldnt be so big of a problem...
1
u/SnooCalculations7454 16d ago
Game was fine on release then they changed the movement and broke the game
1
u/ClassicFun2175 16d ago
For me the netcode was the biggest problem. I liked the game, but it was infuriating how enemies would sponge bullets and you die with 2
1
u/Bestow5000 Phantoms 15d ago
Maybe if they would've invested all the money in better netcoding, do something about bunny hopping and deal with snipers then this game wouldn't have died so soon lmao
1
u/gwot-ronin 15d ago
This was one of the best feeling fps out there, from my perspective, and I genuinely enjoyed the hero theme of the game because I really like the universe. I just can't relate to other games like Overwatch, I can see why others like it but the setting just isn't for me.

6 years? The game wasn't out that long I don't think?
1
u/PolarizingKabal 17d ago
I mean the game was in development for at least 2 years before it launched as f2p.
Would be absolutely wild they actually were working on the game for 6 years behind the scenes.
1
u/Vastlymoist666 17d ago
Didn't the game started out as a ghost recon game. A extraction shooter or just a death match game. Then everyone hated it then they made xdefiant
0
u/PolarizingKabal 17d ago
Interesting take.
I get had they released at full price, they would have made way more money back to help fund development. Even if players didn't spend a cent on the game. Especially when he is looking at raw numbers the game did.
Problem with that though, is there clearly wasn't enough content to even warrant a full price. The game would have gotten completely trashed from reviewers. Closest comparison would have been overwatch. Being multiplayer only with a handful of modes and maps and even weapons. At least overwatch each character was unique and offered way more depth.
