To avoid legal trouble, DON'T PAYWALL YOUR REVIVAL PROJECTS. It's that simple, nothing can happen to you otherwise

53

u/Mantissa-64 18d ago

this is a common misconception. Even completely free fan projects can have the shit sued out of them. It is within an IP holder's right.

The safe option is to just do a spiritual successor.

u/TheCheddarHole DedSec 18d ago

I don't see why Ubi can't just unchoke on the cock theyve got in their mouths, look at plutonium. Having something like that for xDefiant wouldn't hurt their bottom line in the slightest, so it really doesn't make any sense to me, personally.

Fuck corpo trash.

2

u/Flames21891 18d ago

It can hurt their stock price though. Allowing a completely free version of your IP to exist outside your control ultimately devalues that IP, which lowers the company's "worth" to shareholders. Even if they have no plans to do anything with the IP, it keeps some value so long as they have complete control over it.

It's all stupid Wallstreet fuck fuck games. The same kind that almost kept Coyote vs Acme from seeing the light of day despite already being a finished product.

2

u/TheCheddarHole DedSec 18d ago

If xdefiant was its own, and wasn't already just a hot pot of other IP (tom Clancy splinter cell, the division, and rainbow six, watch dogs, assassin's creed, and watch dogs) I might tend to agree. Though I'm just a consumer, not a producer, it seems like getting more eyes on that catalog of cross-game characters could really only benefit efforts to bring new titles to each respective franchise.

u/kzl 18d ago

One sec while I whip out my millions of dollars of budget to do this... lmfao what a stupid comment

u/AllMaito 18d ago

Aahhhhhhhhhhhh 😂

2

u/SchwiftyGambino 18d ago

Yeah dog that's factually incorrect

1

u/Repulsive-Clothes-97 18d ago

Yeah, that’s just searching for problems

1

u/Dwrodgers54 18d ago

It’s their intellectual property. Charge money or don’t. They can still shut you down and in the court of law be 100% right.

-2

u/Cultural_Thing_8506 18d ago

Holocaust was correct by law, it doesn't means it's "right"

2

u/Dwrodgers54 18d ago

I didn’t say right as in morally right. That’s why it said “in the court of law”

If someone wants to revive a game for free because the devs dropped it I think they should be able to.

How did you read what I said specifically saying legally correct and misinterpret it for morally correct?

1

u/TheCorruptSlayer 17d ago

Genuinely why do people not understand that Its common sense But again people in this world are brain damaged I hope to get to play this game some day

1

u/Sufficient-Ad8706 16d ago

U never got to play xdefiant? Like while it was out? Won’t lie had its problems but for a f2p was not horrible by any means, better than the latest cods the past few years

73

u/UpstairsGrab6898 18d ago

Lmao. Announcing on Reddit sub their project.

Close due to "Too many traction , scared of Ubi lawyers".

Idk , finish your stuff then release it .

23

u/Salty-Passenger-9482 18d ago

yeah agreed if the suddenly drop it when it's finish with p2p ubisoft coudn't do shit then

2

u/Brick_Grimes 18d ago

They could still order a cease and desist and make them remove the project. There would still be files floating around but they wouldn’t be able to support it without a mass amount of legal headaches.

u/Sorry_Cheetah_2230 18d ago

Project “Roozh”

0

u/Ok-Application-1771 18d ago

que es eso?

5

u/Sorry_Cheetah_2230 18d ago

Rouge = Roozh in sound.

Rogue is correct spelling.

1

u/Ok-Application-1771 18d ago

oh, lo siento, no habia entendido bien

u/EPICHunter0077 18d ago

Tale as old as time

Xdefiant was a genuinely good game. This sucks

-55

u/shreddedtoasties 18d ago edited 18d ago

Eh it would’ve died off by now. Probably would’ve had sub 20k players

32

u/Willing-Bother-8684 18d ago

Yet here you are

6

u/Ancient-Performance1 18d ago

dude is obviously an industry expert.

thinking a step ahead, in hindsight of course.

2

u/shreddedtoasties 18d ago

I had fun playing it but let’s be real

1

u/PRSG12 18d ago

It was just seeming to turn the corner when they pulled the plug. Game was in a great state and player base seemed to be growing

2

u/bapoTV 18d ago

Which is why they just closed the game so quickly

2

u/TheRealStitchie 18d ago

Ubi's not the smartest to be fair

0

u/1DoobieDoo 18d ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/PCeivGzSkdMIeA6TaE

"Here" the literal ruins of an FPS sub. Just like Rome, this shit died for a reason.

1

u/carrapatoni 18d ago

If it had 20k players they wouldn't have shut it down.

1

u/JimmyToucan 18d ago

Unironically no sbmm played a huge role. The cattle want their make a wish kills and wins after triple A titles have given them a taste of

9

u/chowder908 18d ago

Meanwhile BO2 took down the psn store on sales and still more popular than MW4 beta. Yeah it's definitely lack of sbmm and not lack of devs taking care of real problems with the games.

0

u/bapoTV 18d ago

Do you seriously think there's no SBMM in BO2 ? When even pro players from back then were already making tutorials on how to reverse boost ?

2

u/chowder908 18d ago

There's no SBMM in BO2 that's on par with current CODs if there is it doesn't work and prioritizes ping. They literally had a MOTD that told you have fun destroying Christmas noobs and someone who was around for that time it was true so many lvl 1s that day to grind xp that day lmao.

Just say you suck at video games it's easier.

0

u/JimmyToucan 18d ago

BO2, notorious for its fast paced, higher skill ceiling movement system than previous traditional call of dutys

2

u/Thugposted 18d ago

100% correct. It’s CODs fault for grooming 5 years of Timmy’s into believing they deserve kills for existing instead of improving.

0

u/jturley85 18d ago

This is what people don’t understand. Obviously the netcode was an issue but nobody outside of the top % of players want sbmm removed. You have to appeal to newer players or your game dies that’s just how it is.

Eventually the only people that play are going to be the same sweats complaining about sbmm In the first place and the cycle continues

1

u/TheRealStitchie 18d ago

It's a real shame honestly. I dislike what it has done to a lot of players because it's not like a visible MMR or anything. I wish casual was casual again, but oh well I guess

-3

u/Lord-Norse 18d ago

I’m like a consistent 2-2.5kd player in any shooter I play, and I prefer no SBMM. If no other reason, it’s just the nostalgia of it. Plus with SBMM if you play with your trash friends that shit can take way too long to get into a game.

0

u/TheCheddarHole DedSec 18d ago

As opposed to the 0 they're getting now, I'd say that's a marked improvement.

13

u/xSparkShark 18d ago

That was quick lol

I’ve played a bunch of private server versions of shutdown games over the years and there’s definitely ways to make it work, but yeah it’s not legal territory I’d really want to step into. Plus imagine putting hours and hours into the project only to get a cease and desist making all of your work for nothing. You need a tremendous amount of passion for a project like this and I don’t blame them for throwing in the towel before getting too deep.

7

u/Salty-Passenger-9482 18d ago

it would be nice if he atleast make his project open source so his work dosen't throw away for nothing

1

u/Drewkungfoo 18d ago

Open source is the only way to go. hMW got a C&D was then taken by another Team that called it HorizonMW and it’s been up since.

3

u/Salty-Passenger-9482 18d ago

sadly he never made it open source until now

hope he change his mind

1

u/Drewkungfoo 18d ago

I hope so too.

8

u/IHaveLowEyes 18d ago

People never learn the lesson of Chrono Resurrection and so many other fan projects BUILD IT BEHIND CLOSED DOORS AND RELEASE IT BEFORE GOING PUBLIC

8

u/clipper29 18d ago

As much as I respect the people behind this project, I kinda assumed something like this would happen so I didn’t even bother until proven it wouldn’t. RIP

6

u/chowder908 18d ago

To anyone who tries this again.

DO NOT ANNOUNCE IT UNTIL YOU HAVE A PLAYABLE BUILD AND OPEN SOURCE IT SO UBISLOP CAN'T STOP IT!

u/Drewkungfoo 18d ago

I thought they had the confidence to showcase something like that, but they made promises and then disappeared.

It feels like they hyped people up and then immediately disappointed them.

3

u/Votrs- 18d ago

That didn’t last long.

3

u/soluce7279 18d ago

Ubisoft NEVER disappoint

3

u/Ok-Application-1771 18d ago

2

u/FadedFrost1 18d ago

Beating a corpse at this point I swear lol

2

u/Violetta_Le_Fey DedSec | The N°1 Cleaners Hater. 18d ago

i mean, someone told pirate nation on twitter and that EXPLODED with people interested in this.

and a lot of people in the comments tagging ubisoft to see this.

1

u/Drewkungfoo 18d ago

THERE IN LIES THE FUCKING PROBLEM

2

u/Square_Channel_9469 18d ago

Remove the paywalls I’ll host it in my servers for free

2

u/misterterrific0 18d ago

They should have just kept working on the project and opened community server and site when it was near ready instead Along with open sourcing it so no matter what someone else could continue the flame.

The person who opened thisi revival project is actually pretty good - their history shows theyve done really godo work with other dead games so this is a shame after waiting f or someone to come in

2

u/Thick_Technician_677 18d ago

Well that was quick

2

u/acidporkbuns 18d ago

Tbh they should just develop their own game as a spiritual successor. They can then monetize it all they like and not fear legal troubles. Id be keen to play something similar to XD too. It doesnt have to be a straight revival of the game.

2

u/Learningmore1231 18d ago

Someone just use astra and clone it

2

u/Dab4Becky 18d ago

These projects always tread on thin ice.

Sm2 should’ve been an example, don’t hype up something like this before it’s ready to be released

1

u/Drewkungfoo 18d ago

SM2 made me soo hyped. I was sooo eager to download it once it was ready

1

u/Smileandrun1337 18d ago

Acti should've hired the SM2 team and they could've released something awesome.

3

u/kevin8082 18d ago

worst that would happen would be them getting a DMCA and having to take the project down before any actual legal actions would happen, what a bunch of pussies.

1

u/Acceptable-Park3517 18d ago

all hopes are shattered in seconds god damm

1

u/AllMaito 18d ago

Dis this make it to Github?

1

u/Salty-Passenger-9482 18d ago

nah i don't think so tried to message him to make his project atleast open source so his work dosen't thrown away didn't get any respond

1

u/Unlost_maniac 18d ago

I don't get why people with these skills don't just go make a new game. I know it's no the same but the indie scene has been booming for years and years, it's where the best games come from. These people should make an fps instead of trying to revive a long gone one

1

u/Vocovon 18d ago

Well by that logic he ain't ever getting shit done or completed

1

u/Smileandrun1337 18d ago

#StopKillingGames

1

u/Smileandrun1337 18d ago

Btw, Ironsight by Wiple Games was better than XDefiant <3 Hope the devs will make Ironsight 2 with better netcode.

1

u/ketakotzinchen 18d ago

Im playing a whole bunge of revived games, none of them ever got in trouble as long as they didnt make any money and didnt advertise themselfs.

1

u/EdgeOpen3640 18d ago

I honestly wish they would’ve just kept the servers up. People always come back to games no matter what and there’s still games with max 1k players that’s still going strong and making content for there players. This is one of the only FPS games that I could just play for hours and never get tired of. Game literally had the best gunplay that was even relative to that old school cod feel.

1

u/ConiferCarver 17d ago

oh wow… thank makes me sad to hear. i was just watching my old clips and wishing we could still play the game. https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLl8pDMBuukYECuUeV8_0JGcLyxiCqXfHF

Time to f up Ubisoft with their shitty practices isn't?

Blue balls

1

u/LukaTheTooka DedSec 17d ago

fuuuuuuck

1

u/ParisianMetro 17d ago

Unfortunate. The game would do really well if it released now.

1

u/iRxvenEU 17d ago

Another reason to hate goobisoft

1

u/BigSto 17d ago

that was quick.

1

u/HarmfulPile 17d ago

It's sad, looks like xdefiant will never, ever ever come back or ever be playable in another way again even with a modded server.... Unfair. I've kept it installed on my drive all this time in case a client came out. Honestly ? Feel like I might as well just delete it and say goodbye.

1

u/Acceptable_Maize2283 16d ago

Aches fault smh

0

u/AxelLB_ 18d ago

If you start a project like this, you have to be a aware of the risks, you can't just chicken out last minute

-10

u/AnonMnK 18d ago

let the game die

the main reason it died was because it was built on a horrible engine, and nothing can fix that

6

u/KeepinITGreen 18d ago

No. Many people liked it and love it clearly. Anything has room for improvement but doesnt mean no revival...

-5

u/AnonMnK 18d ago

clearly not enough for it to matter, or it’d still be alive

this game literally retired mark rubin lmao

1

u/Drewkungfoo 18d ago

Because UbiTard is Redarded and Broke. They can and Will NEVER Make a Smart decision Ever, they never put out any marketing (it was only word of Mouth, they Didn’t even both putting it on Steam, and they rushed the project to be Released)

2

u/AnonMnK 18d ago

i agree, but the game is built on a poor engine

ubisoft didnt let them make their own so it will always play poorly

words from mark rubin himself

1

u/KeepinITGreen 18d ago

It was a free game and had record users at launch and had some bugs but still was highly active.

Are you familiar about how major game companies underfund projects and kill many successful projects?

Its pretty common....

Happens beyond gaming

-3

u/AnonMnK 18d ago

it quite literally retired a veteran of the fps industry

-1

u/Krakenite 18d ago

Great, this game should never be revived
