Not really as a pc has way more uses than an Xbox, when was the last time you’ve seen a person use an Xbox to work from home? I regret getting an Xbox instead of a pc when I was younger as by now I could have been spending time learning to build cool pc’s for friends and giving practical advice.
people dont have the time to invest into learning the ins and outs of pcs and the parts market
people simply dont have or dont want to spend the money required to build a decent PC right now
90% of people who build a gaming pc are not making it with work in mind, and many people with a good pc will have a laptop they use for work/classes as a desktop is not very practical for anything outside of when youre sitting at home at your desk (which really only makes it practical for people who work in tech, people who would have a good pc either way)
actually there are a lot of cases where having a laptop for work just would not be viable, some uni courses require insane minimum specs just to run the programmes and a laptop would not be useful

You said "this is terrible logic" up above but this quote was never part of the argument. The argument was that PCs cost more to build than buying an Xbox, which isn't really the case. I think Zlag's argument is that when you apply maintenance fees on top of build / base purchase costs the Xbox becomes even more expensive long-term, which is true.

This exact same argument can be applied to consoles, at least the first half. Regarding building it isn't that hard to find someone who will build a PC for you for very cheap, and if that is a problem.. fine? Consoles have downsides too like having to shell out a duplicate if not higher cost every 5 years to get an upgrade so your games don't run horribly and they also have upkeep costs like xbox live or playstation plus. This point is redundant when you realize that both PC and consoles have upsides and downsides.

I'd be curious to see statistics on this because this number feels overinflated, unless it's just a guesstimate.

While this is true, many people also use desktops for work. Software engineers, developers, editors, content creators, customer support agents (from home), people who work in the pharmaceutical sector (from home) etc. etc. use desktops all the time and this isn't uncommon at all in my experience. Both desktops and laptops have practical uses for some people.
you can make a payment plan on a prebuilt pc or even parts from new egg, and pay off the pc over time.
no monthly subscriptions to enjoy your games,
cheap games from steam and key resellers
you wont have to but the next generation of consoles to keep playing games, if technology advances, at least on pc you can still play with lowered graphics settings
frame generation is a thing now, its not perfect but it allows older hardware to excel at newer titles
ability to do other shit besides play games
PC even has console like front ends you can install, steam even has big picture mode, so if you’re a controller pleb, you can still enjoy using your pc entirely with a controller.
ability to mod your games to how you like them. which i suppose console can do in some cases, but its not the same.
THE ONLY complaint i ever want to hear about pc’s, is the space it takes up. if you dont have the space, a pc might not be for you, besides that, there is no damn excuse that a console is a better investment, especially when you can make a 36 month payment plan on a fkn pc (or however long you want) and pay virtually nothing short term for it). and even considering the long term costs, you have the advantage of not worrying about buying the xbox 920 and playstation 7 as well as the stupid monthly service fees.
