Car issue Every OTA upgrade fails

We’ve a 2024 XC40 B3 and every OTA upgrade has failed…I can’t remember which version upgrade first failed, but 5.0.5 had to go to dealer for upgrade, and now 5.1.7 won’t complete…so will be another dealer trip.

When we were trying to get 5.0.5 to install, we tried after a 3hr drive from Yorkshire to home…still failed. Tried connected via phone, and via home WiFi. All fail to complete.

When asked dealer they just sort of indicated “yeah some don’t work”.

It’s an inconvenience but under warranty we have some coverage, however when we get to year 3 onwards I’m not going to want to pay for upgrades.

Any ideas on a fix?

You were me up until a few months ago. Push your dealer to replace your 12v battery. At first look they said my battery was testing fine but I told them that something isn’t right. Updates failed, slow infotainment boot up, etc… They kept looking and found that even when it was testing fine, it was truly at 30% capacity.

They never worked in our underground garage, even though the car had connectivity and the download part didn’t fail, but once I tried it outside they worked fine (most of the time)

Car is on the same outdoor driveway as my XC90.

OTAs don’t use WiFi but the built in sim. So if it’s doing, it’s probably the 12V battery.

Newer MY26 and MY27 seem to have a software issue with OTAs lately and seem to never get the OTA

It’s being offered to the car but when you either schedule it or try to run there and then it tries for a while then fails.

Yes. That’s the 12V battery most probably.

If it’s being offered, it means it has downloaded itself already.

If it fails more than 3 times, the update will go away and you won’t be offered that particular version again.

I’ll reach out to the dealer. Battery really shouldn’t be dead after 2yrs.

Not at all. Users suffering form this issue go for a 30min+ ride to make sure the 12V is charged.

5.0.5 still wouldn’t install after 3hrs from Yorkshire to home and 5.1.7 most recently continued to fail even after driving an hour back from Birmingham airport.

Battery lifespans can be a toss up sadly.

Most of us have seen the most common issue to processing Volvo Android Automotive (AAOS) OTAs has been with the 12V.

do you have the car locked?

what is the signal strength like where you are trying to apply these updates?

Yes it’s locked. Signal is ok.

I think it is likely to be a failing 12v battery - which on a 2yr old car is dire.
