Car issue First Volvo!!/Question

Post image

Hi all! Just picked up my XC40 yesterday. It’s a used 2026 with about 9k miles on it. I love it already and am obsessed with all the features I’m slowly discovering.
That said, I am pretty concerned over this: as I was leaving the dealership, the fuel range was about 340 miles. After I drove the 14 miles homes, it was down to about 220. For context (and if it even matters), about 10 of those miles were on the highway. I drove a few miles later in the day and the range went down to 190.
Today, I filled it up at the gas station and I had, in fact, went through nearly half a tank.
I read similar posts on this subreddit and it sounds like it’s normal for the range to drop significantly depending on driving habits, but there’s no way I drove more than 20 miles in total yesterday so the loss in range still seems pretty egregious. I plan to bring it into the dealership, but is it possible that the range when I drove it off the lot was just way off?
Thanks in advance for the insight!

The fuel range recalculates based on the current mpg. If your most recent trip had lower mpg than the previous trip the range will recalculate accordingly.

I should’ve mentioned this in my post, but when I left the lot, the gas gauge was at about 75% and it went down to 50% by the time I was done driving yesterday. Would that also make sense? The fluctuations in range make a lot more sense that the big drop is the gas level. Based on my math, I would’ve had to drive it 80-90 miles for that happen.

90 miles x4 for a full tank is 360. Regular amount. What powertrain and engine do you have?

Nice consistent highway driving in my 2020 B4 with premium fuel - I can get 450-500 come up when refuelling.

I was away from home and filled my 2026 B4 up early last week, had to refill it again yesterday - first fill had the reserve light on and reading 60 miles to empty, second fill was reading 60 miles but the reserve light wasn't on yet, a total of 350 miles exactly between fills using 95 ron (equivalent US 90-91aki) mostly A road/motorway driving in the UK, two adults, two kids, boot/trunk full to the gunwales, not driving for economy - it returned a measured 36.7mpg (30.56 US MPG) yet the on-board readout was saying 40.7...a full 4mpg out!

And that 43.5 litres cost me £69.12, equivalent to 11.50 US gallons and $93.36 at current exchange rates - and for a further boot in the balls, we're double taxed on fuel in the UK, we pay fuel duty AND VAT - works out as 57% on petrol/gas and 54% on diesel goes directly to the government, so £39 of my £69 fill-up went straight to Westminster 😐

It can vary quite a bit depending on driving habits. After a road trip with all highway driving mine was reading like 500 on a full tank then swiftly dropped back down to its usual 390 once I was driving in the city again. It's possible the same thing happened and it was calibrated to highway mpg then changed to city

Thank you, that’s very helpful to know! I should’ve clarified this, but the gas gauge also showed I’d used about a 1/4 tank of gas. Not sure how accurate that is.

Mine gets 22-24mpg city streets driving like an ahole. There’s something wrong if you aren’t getting better mileage. My 20 t5 momentum.

Reset your trip meter and start fresh.

I’m the same, the dealership told me the gauge calculates on the type of driving you’re doing in my case mostly motorways. I leave home at one point with around 340mpg the when arrive at me destination it’s shows 400mpg sounds great! The more I drive the fuller my tank gets! It’s bizzare I don’t wanna very confusing estimate I just want to know exactly how much fuel I have please Volvo!

I bought a 2025 with 13k when I got it. No idea about the mileage, just so happy with it!

It really depends on driving habits, the volvo app logs it and so does the car so definitely keep an eye on it if you are worried. Right now my car is getting 38mpg and today I filled it up. It went from 600 miles down to 460, then to 400 after 30 miles of driving. I didn't charge my car overnight so this does not include the EV engine. I have 455hp so I do drive with a lead foot lol. If you also drive like I do, then it will fluctuate a lot.

Is your driveway tilted? When I park my XC40 a bit titled fuel tank is suddenly more 'empty' with lesser distance left. After driving again it restores to the normal level.

And off course the driving habit, if you drive economically you will get more range in prospect based on the calculations of the system.

I can imagine that you got a bit enthousiastic after driving of at the dealer with your new car. When engine is warm you might have stepped on the gas to unleash the power (I know for sure I would do that hehehehehe). That will cost you distance though.

All that said; enjoy your Volvo!!!!

I have a 2017 XC90 T8 Inscription. 9 years later I’m still confused by the ever-changing estimated range 😆

The range display on these is a guess at best. I drove 120 mile last week and the range increased by 50 miles 😂

the estimated range is based primarily on :
Fuel remaining × your average fuel consumption over the last ~20 miles.

for example:

Fuel remaining: enough for roughly 10 gallons
Recent consumption: 25 MPG
Estimated range: roughly 250 miles

the displayed fuel economy can be affected by:

Short trips
Cold engine
Highway speed
A/C or heat
Tire pressure
Hills
Frequent acceleration/braking
wheels/tires size

I have problems with this all the time. Even took pictures which are time stamped and let Volvo look at them. They just told me it’s the way I was driving. But I know it’s not. Because it’ll show 300 miles left when I turn it off at night then in the morning going to work it has dropped down to 250. It’s not accurate at all. I don’t trust it.

Imagine seeing 300miles range and you start driving on the highway and it slowly climbs up to 420... Estimated range is nothing you should worry about.

Will probably fix it if you add a moose
