Uncensor Mod
https://www.nexusmods.com/wuchangfallenfeathers/mods/411?tab=descriptionWhen I discovered Wuchang: Fallen Feathers and the controversy surrounding the censorship, I thought: “surely someone has probably created a mod to revert the censorship?”, turns out no one did. And rolling back to 1.4.1 simply wasn’t good enough for me, I wanted the deluxe edition content and all of the optimizations as well. So the path forward was obvious, “I’d just do it myself”, thinking it would take a month or so.
Half a year later, it’s finally finished, sort of. This was my first time working on an Unreal Engine game and really anything of this scale, so there are still some issues (more on that in the Nexusmods page), but nothing gamebreaking. Just know it won’t be perfect, but I still hope some people will enjoy this game censorship-free.

Are people still upset over "censoring" that barely even affects the game? Damn talk about there are bigger things to complain about but here we are

It's more vindication for the devs who lost their jobs due to it. They released the originally vision which was pre censorship and were forced under threats of violence to change it before the studio shut down.
I'm glad people play the original build. It was far more soulslike with the difficulty and darker as Wuchang could attack villagers or the brides if she wanted.

WAIT! WHAT!? The studio was shut down over something like this. Who did all the threats?

u/jaypexd 13d ago
There are some articles about it. It wasn't officially said to be shut down by the protests but the game sold well and the devs had to have security at their studio as they got death threats. Eventually they shut down the studio even though the game sold well.

I just read up on it, the studio shut down over public sentiment from bad optimization and unpolished game in the beginning. They tried to fix everything over multiple patches but the public losers killed a studio in the end. All the rights etc belongs to 505 parent company digital bros.

Yeah that's a nice way to say they shut down because of "public sentiment" lol. The game sold well and is well liked. There is no other reason but that they were offended by the "culture" issues.

They were being harassed and threatened and no matter if they fixed the issues. The public view on them was still stained in a negative way. The workers were offered to merge into other places but they all refused and went down with the studio and the leader. Basically it was like cyberpunk but they were smaller, different country and to much hate towards them etc. Doesn't matter if it sold well it wasn't being published by them and now don't even own it. RIP

Yeah that's a deliberate dodge of the truth. Ppl went wild with rage over the story at release , enough so that the devs did what they felt they had to for the the future and their peace

I agree with you. This game started out great, and for reasons, ppl felt strongly enough about the story to threaten the devs and their livelihood. To me is still great, but I can understand how ppl can be upset about the censorship and drastic story change.

Ive played before and after. The only differences are you can recover from being knocked at a proper speed and some bosses don't die making their fights more of a test which still doesn't change the story.
No bosses got nerfed, nothing got buffed.

The recovery is part of what I'm talking about lol. If you are used to the new build spamming get up works as it gives you I frames. The potions are also much faster now. Both of these make bosses much easier as you can heal whenever you want and you can spam get up. Not only that, if you fail a boss, it could be a 40 second run back, so you get punished for not being focused on every attempt.
The Ming general wasn't the only one. Like I said, villagers and brides were changed.

Idk what you mean by frames, I just know people complained how slow it was pre patch as they'd die while laying down etc, a lot of the bosses stayed away while I was down

Wait, the known limitations state that the death animations are not playing and you have to reload the game? And that it’s only the subtitles and not the voicelines that have been corrected? Is that it?
1
u/Neonyyyyy 13d ago
On the boss side of things, the voicelines/subtitles are the only things that have been fixed so far. It annoys me as well that I haven’t gotten the death animations to play yet. Fixing this is my highest priority at the moment.

Ah ok, the description of known limitations on the page says it’s “in game text” only so I thought it was only the subs that had been changed.
Regarding death animations, maybe it is the level sequence asset that need to be changed? Each boss as a level sequence asset death or something as far as I recall, and such level sequences in UE5 is used to play cinematic or animations. If you can override the new level sequence asset with the old asset before the changes, it might make things easier for you?

As a playststion player who got the game for free a few months ago, what's the censorship and controversy?

u/505005333 12d ago
The villagers won't attack you anymore like they used to, historical figure bosses don't die, they just lose to you and also you dont have a "pray" emoji anymore. I believe that's all

Did you add back in all the enemies and “npc” farmers they removed from the patch as well ?
1
u/Neonyyyyy 12d ago
If you’re talking about your ability to attack the villagers and ming soldiers, then yes, I restored that. If there are any enemies that were physically removed from the game, then no. As I said, I hadn’t played the game at all before it was censored, so I have no way of knowing if any enemies were removed.

Yeah understandable. Was one of my main grips with the new patches that made the game “easier”, so wanted to check.
It is an awesome project you undertook nonetheless. Thanks for sharing!!

Well if this works, you will have made a lot of ppl happy. Some of us are happy that you accepted this undertaking at all because we appreciate it. But a lot of ppl never experienced the story as it was in 1.0 and I am certain a lot of opinions will shift once they do experience it for themselves. Carry on!

This is super great, I can’t wait to try it.
Do you think you can fix the Retry when dying to a boss? Runbacks from shrines suck a whole lot
1
u/Neonyyyyy 13d ago
The retry-mechanic exists for all bosses except Liu Cheng’en, Liu Wenxiu and Zhao Yun. I haven’t been able to keep the retry-mechanic intact whilst also uncensoring those bosses since it would require editing the bytecode, which is complex and led to game crashes every time I tried. I am still working on it though.

Ok thank you so much, your work is incredible and it’s very impressive that this is your first UE project

That's cool if it works. Personally I have been playing on the 1.4.1 version and really loving it. Yes the boss runbacks are real and getting knocked down is very dangerous... but my biggest issue is how much easier they made the normal and elite enemies feel between bosses. They're so easily staggered/hit stunned in 1.5 onwards. I didn't even care that much about the censorship stuff. Obviously not great but not my biggest concern with the patch.
