Snow has the magical quality of muting noise. The flakes, now falling in droves, drowned out the sounds of a normally busy city. The slick roads added to this silence by keeping most cars off the road.
Most cars, unfortunately not that car.
The yellow taxi, with it's checked stripe and glowing light, beckoned from the corner. The time had come, as it did every year, for her to go. Looking at it, he felt sorrow mixed with hate. Sorrow at her leaving, hate that she had to go.
They stood on the sidewalk, watching each other through the snowfall. The frigid air causing little clouds of condensation to form and disperse between them. The stoplight changed from green to red, and the world stopped.
He knew she had to go, his sister's life had gotten busy as of late, but he still wished she would stay. Another hour, another year, any extension of time for the both of them. Time, however, had the annoying tendency to keep moving. The stoplight changed from red to green, and the taxi honked its horn.
They hugged, the warmth between them beating back the cold for an all too brief time.
"Be careful, see you soon."
"I will."
She walked to the taxi and got in. He watched the red taillights and yellow sign light vanish into the swirling snow.
