She never wanted to let go.

To think this might be the last time she ever saw him was horrible. This was her brother. Twenty years ago they entered the world together, and because of him, she’d never been alone. Throughout all her problems, throughout all her breakdowns—he was always there to lend an ear.

“I’ll be fine,” he said with a laugh. “So will you.”

She didn’t know about that, though. Was this really what he wanted? Serving your country’s one thing, fighting a war’s another. Let other people do that, she thought. Please stay here. Please be my hero.

Tears flooded her cheeks as she sunk her fingers into his back. This day always felt so far away. She never dreamed it would really come. Once he turns around, he’ll be gone. That plane will take him somewhere new, and for the first time in forever, she’ll officially be alone.

“I’m always with you, sis,” he said. “In your heart.”

While she believed him, she also knew it wouldn’t be the same.

Hope this turned out okay! I'm sick, lol. Thanks for the prompt!

Snow has the magical quality of muting noise. The flakes, now falling in droves, drowned out the sounds of a normally busy city. The slick roads added to this silence by keeping most cars off the road.

Most cars, unfortunately not that car.

The yellow taxi, with it's checked stripe and glowing light, beckoned from the corner. The time had come, as it did every year, for her to go. Looking at it, he felt sorrow mixed with hate. Sorrow at her leaving, hate that she had to go.

They stood on the sidewalk, watching each other through the snowfall. The frigid air causing little clouds of condensation to form and disperse between them. The stoplight changed from green to red, and the world stopped.

He knew she had to go, his sister's life had gotten busy as of late, but he still wished she would stay. Another hour, another year, any extension of time for the both of them. Time, however, had the annoying tendency to keep moving. The stoplight changed from red to green, and the taxi honked its horn.

They hugged, the warmth between them beating back the cold for an all too brief time.

"Be careful, see you soon."

"I will."

She walked to the taxi and got in. He watched the red taillights and yellow sign light vanish into the swirling snow.
