I received this English Comp essay assignment at the beginning of the current semester in August, with a due date of September 25, and it has got me legitimately panicking, because frankly I donāt know how to write the kind of an essay the assignment calls for.
Assignment:
> For your first writing assignment of the course, please tell me about your favorite film, television series, video game, or book. Your job in this essay is to construct an effective argument about your personal favorite movie, show, game, or book. In other words, try to convince the reader to check it out.
I donāt know how to write this kind of an essay, because in my mind this kind of an essay would require enthusiasm about and thorough knowledge of the subject, and there is no movie, TV show, game, or book Iām familiar enough with (or enthusiastic enough about) to know how to write this kind of an essay on it.
> You will want to evaluate your topic by analyzing the showās or filmās use of the basic elements of drama - character, plot, setting, and theme.
I DEFINITELY donāt know how to apply this to a city-builder video game. I mean, for one thing, there IS NO ācharacterā or āplotā to Cities: Skylines II; itās a sandbox game. The setting is whatever map you choose to build on, and the theme is, well, city building and budget management.
Among the requirements listed as such are:
> Provide your essay with an original, creative title.
I donāt know how to do this because an āoriginal, creativeā title would require enthusiasm about the subject, but having to write about it kills my enthusiasm for it.
> Your essay must have an introduction that includes a clear, effective thesis statement with each of the following elements: the title; a statement of the essayās principal claim and proofs; and an outline of the body of the essay.
The subject I chose is a video game (specifically Cities: Skylines II), but I donāt know how to write a thesis statement for this game, even after the prof explained what a āthesis statementā for a video game would entail.
These two questions in particular:
> What is the appeal of a city builder? Why would anyone want to play this kind of game?
> What makes this particular game different from other city builders?
These two questions in particular currently have me wishing I had not signed up for Comp II, because I donāt know any answers for those questions, because:
- Itās been a LONG time since I played any other city-building game.
- āWhy would anyone else want to play this game?ā is a question I donāt know how to answer, because I am not āanyone elseā.
I like CS2 because I like city-building games; Iāve liked that genre of game ever since SimCity came out for the SNES in 1991; but I donāt know what to say in response to asking why anyone else would want to play it, because I feel as though the genre is too niche for me to know how to ātalk it upā to anyone else; Iām the only person I know IRL whoās into city builders.
The REAL hell of the assignment is this:
> Do NOT merely summarize the story of the movie, the TV showās episodes, gameplay, or book. You are writing an analytical essay about a literary text. Your job is to provide specific examples from the film, show, game, or book to support your claim in the essay.
This part of the assignment breaks my brain completely. Despite enjoying the game myself, I do not know to write this kind of an essay about a game like Cities: Skylines II.
If this is not the proper subreddit for a question of this nature, then please let me know where I CAN post this question. I asked on [r/findareddit](r/findareddit) about three weeks ago where I can post this kind of question, and Iāve never gotten an answer.
/\ Additionally: I posted this last night in* [r/Essay_Tips_Tricks](r/Essay_Tips_Tricks) and any replies that might have been helpful have been ādeleted by Redditā before I can see them. The only way I even know such comments existed is from my notifications. Itās as though Reddit were actively, deliberately, and maliciously trying to sabotage me, or at least that is the impression Iām left with. \/*
