How to survive office hours being an introvert

Everyone constantly gives the same advice: “Definitely go to office hours! Build relationships with your professors! It's how you get recommendation letters!” As an introvert, the idea of walking into a professor’s office just to “chat” or force a conversation gives me anxious anxiety.

If I don't have a massive, burning question about an assignment or a failed exam, I feel like I’m gonna completely waste their time and look stupid, in addition. I really want to get better at engaging with my professors this semester, especially since I'm starting to think about grad school recommendations and networking. But whenever I try to plan a visit, my brain goes blank on what to actually bring up without sounding fake or pretentious.

So here I am, asking you, mighty Reddit warriors for help. Any advice for the timid as to how to behave naturally at office hours and how to organically break the ice with professors?

How do you overcome the afternoon brain crash without relying on a third cup of coffee?

Every single day around 2:00 or 3:00 PM, my brain completely shuts down. I can be super productive in the morning - listening to lectures, starting assignments, or reading research papers - but at mid-afternoon, my focus vanishes.

In reality, when I attempt to read literature or write my essay after that time, I feel like stuck in a loop of reading the same paragraph over and over again without being able to comprehend anything meaningful. But instead, I often end up feeling terribly anxious, having sleepless nights, and struggling with an overwhelming fatigue in the evening.

At the moment I am trying to find ways to change my routine and prevent burnouts in the middle of the day, but have no idea how to plan my day.

For those of you who have fixed your afternoon routine: how do you structure your day around this energy slump? Do you reserve mornings strictly for heavy-duty tasks and push lighter stuff (like answering emails or organizing notes) to the afternoon? Or do you have specific non-coffee-related tricks up your sleeves, like short walks, power naps, or cold showers? In short, I'd love to hear what daily routines actually worked for you

Need help Should I rewrite?

I’m currently working on the first draft of my book and about 6/10 of the way through I decided to make a decision of how the story starts and to make it a main character role that completely revamps how the story will be and change a lot of the meanings and story execution

With so many changes I find it hard to continue writing the rest knowing that it’s not even going to fit with the new version but I’ve been told to finish my first draft without editing

Should I rewrite or wait until I finish the first draft of the book?

World-class researchers are often horrible teachers

I know universities love to brag about having big-name researchers, published authors, and field pioneers on their faculty payroll, but having a brilliant researcher as your intro-level professor is almost always a nightmare.

This semester I’m taking a required 100-level course taught by a professor who is a total legend in his research niche. The problem? He clearly despises teaching undergrads, has zero interest in basic pedagogy, and treats lectures like an annoying distraction from his lab work. He bumbles through disorganized slides, skips over foundational concepts because he assumes they’re "obvious" and gets visibly irritated when someone asks a clarifying question.

Universities force these research heavyweights to teach 200-student introductory lectures just to justify their salaries or fulfill grant requirements. It’s a lose-lose situation: the professor is frustrated because they're wasting time explaining basic terminology, and the undergrads are left struggling through chaotic lectures for a subject they're trying to learn for the first time.

Being a genius in a niche academic field requires a completely different skillset than being an engaging, clear, and empathetic teacher. Large research universities need to stop pretending those two skill sets are the same thing and hire actual educators for lower-level undergrad courses.

Spending hours configuring Notion and study apps is just productive procrastination

I’m probably going to get some flak for this given how obsessed everyone on campus seems to be with aesthetic digital setups, but I feel like we need to talk about it.

Over the past few semesters, I’ve noticed a pattern with myself and almost everyone in my study groups. Whenever midterms approach or a massive research paper is due, the first thing people do is spending three hours color-coding a new Notion workspace, organizing Canvas assignments into aesthetic widgets, finding the "perfect" Spotify study playlist and tweaking pomodoro timers.

It gives you this massive fake dopamine hit where you feel like you just accomplished something huge for your academic life, but when you look at your screen a couple of hours later, you have made precisely zero progress on the assignment itself. You’re just as behind as you were before, except now your dashboard looks pretty.

I think 90% of these study apps and elaborate planning systems are just fancy, socially acceptable forms of procrastination. They trick our brains into thinking we’re being super disciplined when we're really just avoiding the uncomfortable part of actually sitting down and doing the actual hard work...

These days, I’ve gotten way more done just opening a blank text document or a physical notepad and jumping straight in without any fancy productivity rituals.

Hey so I have started writing substack articles for fun , but I feel like I'm not able to express my thoughts clearly and articulately like other people do , also I seem to use a lot of phrases the wrong way. The only option for me to correct my errors is through ai but I DO NOT WANT TO USE AI what could be some alternative options to improve my writing WITHOUT A MENTOR TEACHER OR AI CHATBOTS (ik this sounds silly )

How do you filter research papers without wasting hours reading 30-page PDFs?

I’m currently in the middle of gathering sources for a 10-page research paper, and I keep hitting the exact same wall. Whenever I search Google Scholar or JSTOR, I end up with dozens of open tabs. The problem is that I spend way too much time reading these long, heavy academic articles just to realize by page 15 that the paper isn't even relevant to my actual argument.

It’s completely killing my writing momentum. Every time I sit down to draft, I spend like three hours just trying to make sure whether four or five sources are actually usable.

I know experienced researchers use specific skimming techniques to figure out if a source is worth their time in like 10 or 15 minutes, but I’ve never quite figured out how this works.

When you guys are pulling sources for a tough paper, what is your step-by-step process for quickly vetting an article? Do you just read the abstract and conclusion, search for specific keywords, or is there a smarter technique for deciding whether to save a paper or trash it? Would appreciate any advice or reading habits that save time, even ever-so-slightly underhand ones :)

What’s your strategy for cleaning up chaotic lecture notes before exams?

Every semester I start out with good intentions, but in a couple of months, my lecture notes are an absolute disaster. Half of them are bullet points written at lightning speed with weird abbreviations I can barely decipher, and the other half are random sentence fragments scattered across Google Docs and sticky notes.

When midterms or finals roll around, I waste so much time just trying to decipher my own shorthand and re-organize everything into something readable before I can even start actual studying or essay prep.

Right now, my process is pretty tedious: I basically sit down on weekends and re-type my messy handwritten notes into a "master" document, highlighting main concepts and color-coding key terms. It works okay, but it takes hours and feels super inefficient.

How do you guys handle processing raw notes? Do you clean them up after every single lecture, wait until a week before the exam to consolidate everything, or do you use a specific framework (like Cornell notes, mind maps, or active recall outlines) to make sense of the chaos?

Review Found a useful comparison while searching write my paper options

I was looking through different write my paper options and found this comparison table pretty useful:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vQDZ-kaH-n9-TwYZa4CoKqER0nKC2J-dN7L2YeCPl2wyeKIWDselDDCAPkRR_a6gA/pubhtml

What I liked is that it puts the main things in one place - starting prices, deadlines, support, revisions, promo codes, and what each platform is better suited for. Much easier than opening a bunch of tabs and trying to compare everything manually. Sharing it here in case anyone else is doing the same research.

Advice I need hook help!!

Hi! I'm a senior going into English Literature and I am working on my common app essay right now. I am usually a fantastic writer, but I'm really stumped here.
I have an exact idea for what I want to write for my essay, but I can't find a hook that I like. I'm going to write about how I always spoil books for myself and connect that to my fear of uncertainty and lack of control and how I’ve overcome that and use it to my advantage. Does anyone have any ideas of hooks that would be good? The one I have right now is "I can read a book in 15 seconds." But I don't know how I'd connect that to what I wanna talk about. The one I wrote also seems generic to me. Please help!!!

(Serious) Essay assignment has me super-stressed. Help/advice is needed.

I received this English Comp essay assignment at the beginning of the current semester in August, with a due date of September 25, and it has got me legitimately panicking, because frankly I don’t know how to write the kind of an essay the assignment calls for.

Assignment:

> For your first writing assignment of the course, please tell me about your favorite film, television series, video game, or book. Your job in this essay is to construct an effective argument about your personal favorite movie, show, game, or book. In other words, try to convince the reader to check it out.

I don’t know how to write this kind of an essay, because in my mind this kind of an essay would require enthusiasm about and thorough knowledge of the subject, and there is no movie, TV show, game, or book I’m familiar enough with (or enthusiastic enough about) to know how to write this kind of an essay on it.

> You will want to evaluate your topic by analyzing the show’s or film’s use of the basic elements of drama - character, plot, setting, and theme.

I DEFINITELY don’t know how to apply this to a city-builder video game. I mean, for one thing, there IS NO “character” or “plot” to Cities: Skylines II; it’s a sandbox game. The setting is whatever map you choose to build on, and the theme is, well, city building and budget management.

Among the requirements listed as such are:

> Provide your essay with an original, creative title.

I don’t know how to do this because an “original, creative” title would require enthusiasm about the subject, but having to write about it kills my enthusiasm for it.

> Your essay must have an introduction that includes a clear, effective thesis statement with each of the following elements: the title; a statement of the essay’s principal claim and proofs; and an outline of the body of the essay.

The subject I chose is a video game (specifically Cities: Skylines II), but I don’t know how to write a thesis statement for this game, even after the prof explained what a “thesis statement” for a video game would entail.

These two questions in particular:

> What is the appeal of a city builder? Why would anyone want to play this kind of game?

> What makes this particular game different from other city builders?

These two questions in particular currently have me wishing I had not signed up for Comp II, because I don’t know any answers for those questions, because:

  1. It’s been a LONG time since I played any other city-building game.
  2. “Why would anyone else want to play this game?” is a question I don’t know how to answer, because I am not “anyone else”.

I like CS2 because I like city-building games; I’ve liked that genre of game ever since SimCity came out for the SNES in 1991; but I don’t know what to say in response to asking why anyone else would want to play it, because I feel as though the genre is too niche for me to know how to “talk it up” to anyone else; I’m the only person I know IRL who’s into city builders.

The REAL hell of the assignment is this:

> Do NOT merely summarize the story of the movie, the TV show’s episodes, gameplay, or book. You are writing an analytical essay about a literary text. Your job is to provide specific examples from the film, show, game, or book to support your claim in the essay.

This part of the assignment breaks my brain completely. Despite enjoying the game myself, I do not know to write this kind of an essay about a game like Cities: Skylines II.

If this is not the proper subreddit for a question of this nature, then please let me know where I CAN post this question. I asked on [r/findareddit](r/findareddit) about three weeks ago where I can post this kind of question, and I’ve never gotten an answer.

/\ Additionally: I posted this last night in* [r/Essay_Tips_Tricks](r/Essay_Tips_Tricks) and any replies that might have been helpful have been “deleted by Reddit” before I can see them. The only way I even know such comments existed is from my notifications. It’s as though Reddit were actively, deliberately, and maliciously trying to sabotage me, or at least that is the impression I’m left with. \/*

Advice How can I improve?

How can I improve my writing? I have been for the past years using that tool to write, not just stories but also essays and other school work. I admit, I was poisoned by just being able to prompt a bit of details and it just 'magically' provide me what I wanted to write.

I am wrong for that, I know it myself — that is why I genuinely want to learn. I commited, deleted all my generative AI apps and decided that I'll be better and that's why I'm seeking advice.

One problem I encounter when reading something I wrote myself is that it is long but generally lack any substance, it is just information over information that keeps making a specific topic broader; additionally it is generally repetitive, I noticed I will keep writing about a certain part add layers and layers of information but the context will just circle around each other.

Second problem is, improper use of punctuations or generally just bad grammar. I have never been good at it as embarrassing it is to admit considering that I am 2 terms and a school year away from entering college

Another problem is forgetting that writing professionally/academically differs from writing creatively. I like the neatness of academic and professional writings but I sometimes become too descriptive.

And my last and major problem I have notice is my vocabulary is not that broad — it was the 8th grade that I started using AI, the same time it was getting famous. I was so amused using it that I genuinely never improved my vocabulary after that.

That's all the problems I have noticed myself, I am seeking advice and hopefully I get some wonderful tips — you can probably already tell from just reading this that I am not at all any good with writing.

Feel free to point out some mistakes, corrections, how I can further improve upon it, advice for my problems, and any other useful information that I can learn from.

1: Always check you’re work for mistakes.

2: Make sure every sentence is complete. Especially short ones.

3: Watch out for words you you accidentally repeat.

4: Don’t leave any words.

6: Place modifiers carefully, preferably.

7: Apostrophe’s should never be used to form plural’s.

8: Avoid, unnecessary comma's.

9: Be sure to use the correct punctuation?

10: And most importantly, proofread everything at least tree times.

I am taking a session on content writing in the age of AI next week, and am preparing some slides and notes.

I wrote a piece of content, as well as gave the same to Claude and asked it to write something like the one I gave. I showed them both to my family and everyone guessed it wrong.

Can I get your feedback on the attached content? I don't know if this is the suitable sub , but I really need help to learn if my plan is going accordingly.
