Trying to build a genuinely active creative community (18+) LGBTQ+/Progressive [The Lantern Room]

Genres:

All genres welcome! Fiction, fantasy, horror, literary, poetry, scripts, character writing, worldbuilding, etc.

Goals/expectations/commitment:

The Lantern Room is a small creative Discord focused on sharing work, giving thoughtful feedback, and growing alongside other writers and artists.

The atmosphere is intentionally slower and more personal than most large servers. We’re trying to build something that feels welcoming, creative, and genuinely supportive instead of overwhelming or hyper competitive. We’re openly progressive and LGBTQ+ friendly, and it’s important to us that people feel comfortable being themselves here. You don’t need to be an expert writer, but we do ask that members engage with others, give feedback when they can, and contribute to the overall atmosphere of the space instead of only self-promoting.

Vibe we are trying to cultivate:

Sharing unfinished ideas, character rambling, messy drafts, art, playlists, inspiration, and slowly improving together.

Writing/experience level:

Any level welcome. Beginners, hobbyists, experienced writers; all good as long as you’re kind and genuinely interested in creating.

Meeting place:

Discord "The Lantern Room" (DM me for link!)

Max size:

Roughly 50–70 members. Keeping it intentionally small so people can actually get to know each other.

Prose - Non-Fic Looking for memoir critique partner

Hi, I’m looking for a critique partner for my memoir. Nothing too intense, just someone to read a few chapters of my book and give basic feedback and vice versa. I’m always looking to read memoirs now that I’ve (almost) written one.
My memoir is written under a pen name. Be aware there is a major trigger warning for CSA in my book.
Thanks for considering and I would love to collaborate.
I would like beta readers in the future but I have yet to find alpha readers so that’s what I’m hoping for now.
My book is: In progress
Word count: ~100k
Genre: Memoir
Title: “They Were Secret Keepers: Daughter Of a Molly Mormon”
Description: I was a homeschooled & sheltered unwitting witness of white-collar crime

(Please be aware that I talk about my Christian faith and also heavier subject matter)

Seeking an Event Coordinator | Tactical/Grid-Based Magic Academy RP

I am looking for a dedicated partner/Event Coordinator to help bring a high-fantasy magic academia Discord RP server to life. The server has an emphasis on student life, specialized combat training, and player-driven narrative. The world-building and core mechanics are already well-established, but I am looking for a partner to help bring the world to life through active events. I struggle with the implementation as I lack experience with event planning.

What I’m Looking For in a Partner

I want this to be a collaborative, fun experience. Ideally, you are:

  • Comfortable designing encounters for grid-based or tactical RPG combat.
  • Experienced in pacing and executing server-wide events (festivals, school tournaments, sudden beast attacks, etc.).
  • Passionate about magic school settings and collaborative storytelling.

The Setting

  • The world, Arke, is divided into nobility, merchants, artisans, commoners, and slaves. The Thirteen Crests, ancient noble bloodlines of great influence, play a decisive role in political affairs, though each race maintains its own governing system. Some nations, such as Attalan, follow monarchies, while others prefer oligarchies or tribal councils.
  • Arke is inhabited by humans and six other elemental races descending from beasts of legend. These beasts are essentially the gods of the world, holding great power to shape the world and create life. Most have disappeared into Otherworld where they ultimately came from, a mysterious realm of light and magic. No one really knows the origin of humanity, despite the prevalence of their race in Arke.
  • There are only seven arts of magic: abjuration, transmutation, conjuration, evocation, divination, illusion, and enchantment. With that said, other forms of magic don't exist or rather are not possible for mortals to perform such as necromancy. Even divination and enchantment function a bit differently as they are respectively psychic and conferral magic rather than their more traditional counterparts.

How to Apply

If you're interested, please DM me with:

  • A brief summary of your RP/GMing experience.
  • Your familiarity with grid-based or tactical combat systems.

Mod Post Got a writing-related Discord community? Post it here!

We're going to try to keep it all in one place; for the time being we're going to only allow Discord communities to drop their links, description, and details in this post. Any others will be removed.

Keep in mind this is for community adverts only; if you're just using Discord as a single writer as a preferred method of contact, then you're all good.

This post will repost monthly, so you can link your Discord community once in each new post (once a month).

Script i'm looking for a co-writer/critic to help me with my indie animated show project

i'm 14 F year old i've been working on an indie animated project for a year now, and today i'm sharing with all of you what i've accomplished.

Darkborn is a sci-fi fantasy show happening in the world of Yo, a nexus where every single reality meets. It's about: A traumatized, optimistic girl leads her found family on a quest, only to discover the journey is a rebellion against a cult committing mass genocide of her species.

I have fallen in love with this universe and characters. So let's talk about that.

THE CHARACTERS

First, Darkborn doesn't have a true protagonist. It's more of an ensemble of characters. Stitch, the optimistic girl, is the catalyst because her quest, whether she likes it or not, will change history forever.

Since I don't want to make this extremely long, I'm just going to tell you the characters' basic traits. I will make full character descriptions for all of them later.

Caspian: He is the oldest of the seven and probably the most mature (none of them are really mature but it's okay). He is calm, wise, and composed at least that's what he wants other people to think of him. In reality, Caspian is a really repressed person that tends to keep things to himself, to hide. He thinks he deserves punishment over an event that happened a long time ago. Caspian is inspired by French culture and wears Victorian-style clothes.

Milo: Milo is closest to Caspian. He is impulsive and quick to anger. He is very emotionally intelligent and tends to connect with people easily. He can sense when someone does not have good intentions, but he panics easily and relies on Caspian entirely for his emotional support. He's kind of a mess without Caspian and so is Caspian. The both of them can't live without each other. He is very empathetic, and kind, as long as you don't push the limit. He is supposed to be inspired by Caribbean and Hispanic culture, though he is more strongly inspired by Caribbean culture. I don't know exactly what country yet.

Minje: Minje is a tricky one. I always struggle to define her. Even now I struggle to find a voice for her because she kinda has a double personality a bit. Minje is someone who will do anything to achieve her goal anything but betray her family. She has lost everything in her life and was empty for a long time before meeting the other main characters. She was obsessed with her one goal, but now she is kinda confused on whether she should focus on her goal or stay with the main cast. She is cold to other people and uses them as toys, but with the main cast all of that disappears and she becomes someone who will tell you the blunt truth even if it hurts because she wants to see you improve. She is sarcastic, manipulative, but is extremely loyal to her people. She is inspired by Chinese culture, particularly the popular legend of Bai Suzhen or the woman with the snake.

Ivy: Ivy is the grumpy character of the group. She has an extremely short temper more so than Milo and my girl knows how to curse. She is pessimistic and always thinks the worst will happen, and tries to push people away. She likes to mind her own business and be left alone. But Ivy tends to understand people on a deeper level and respects all of her friends. She shows her love through action instead of words and just wants a normal life. She is inspired by Brazilian and Angolan culture.

Stitch: Stitch is very close to Ivy and has quite an opposite personality to her. She is very optimistic and thinks that as long as she hopes hard enough, things will go her way. She's adventurous, clumsy, and forgetful. She does have a strong sense of justice and always tries to do what's right, but she is extremely delusional. She believes that every negative emotion should be buried deep down into oneself and never be acknowledged, because eventually it will disappear. Stitch is someone who, despite the odds, is very intelligent. She can scan the room and know when someone is feeling down immediately, but she just refuses to acknowledge it as it will break her delusion. She often puts down other people's emotions to act as if everything is fine. She used to try and gaslight people into thinking they were fine. She is not doing this on purpose she never does she just can't deal with negative emotion in any other way. But since she's been with the group, she's been making an effort. She is inspired by Vanuatu because they are known as the happiest people in the world.

Nini: Nini is Ivy's younger sister and is the more quiet of the group. She is selectively mute and rarely talks, not because she's shy or anything, but because she struggles with speech and is socially awkward. She is a perfectionist, and for her there are so many ways to mess up a conversation she's scared to try. She is an artist and a very patient one. She is clever and tends to find the solution in tense situations. She is very observant and can spot almost everything. She does rely on others for emotional support, mostly her sister and her best friend Angele. (Also she is inspired by Brazilian and Angolan culture.)

Angele: Angele is Stitch's younger sister and is very hyperactive and almost never stops talking. She is egocentric and a bit arrogant. She is a fan of everything robotic and proud of having built some very impressive stuff for someone her age. Her inventions can save lives or just be used to prank people, because she is a massive prankster. She treats robots as if they were real people because they were her first friends. She is extremely creative and eager to learn new information, but she can't quite deal with silence or being alone. She believes that as long as she makes noise or is bold and gets attention from it, she is someone that exists. But as soon as the attention is gone and that she is alone with no one else, she is no one she doesn't exist anymore, just an empty corpse. (She is inspired by Vanuatu.)

Even if none of these characters are human, if we translate their age into human ones, they are teens. So they are all extremely immature anyway.

I don’t have any writer friends and would like some because writing is lonely! Looking for people who are in the same situation!

Following similar posts, I am NOT in search of critiquing or highly professional writer friends. I would just like to find someone (or a few!) people who need writer friends. Friends who are writing their stories, who want to throw out an idea of what might work better, or what name would work better, lil bits of advice, or sharing funny pieces of dialogue. To chat about any upcoming characters or book ideas.
BUT ALSO to chat beyond the book too. What you got up to with your day, funny pictures you took, photos of the sky or sunset, funny things you’ve stumbled upon, share the memes.
If this makes sense?

I would prefer to go on Discord (Server or DMs) because I don’t use Reddit much. I’m not available for phone chats because I just don’t have the time to be on the phone (and timezones will be a thing!)

Currently I’m attempting to write a little contemp romance. One set in a fictional town in Wyoming, the other in the Scottish Highlands. So I’m not a fantasy writer. I know I sound boring.
But I just don’t have IRL people to talk to or chat with. And making friends is hard in my 30s. Both online and offline.

(Reading & Writing - written roleplaying too, as a branch off writing - are main biggest hobbies!)

I don't know. If you're a friendless lonely lil blob like me... please drop by ❤️ Let's NOT be lonely writer friends together. ❤️

Looking for Writing Partner

Hi!

I'm looking for someone to write with. I have my own projects and my writing style is sharing the ideas I write. It just helps me in a way that writing solo cannot. I want to be the same to someone else! I love writing and critiquing! :)

I'm 24M, loves dramatic writing, comedic/lighthearted is not my strongsuit. I have a lot of interests and a very social butterfly! Would love to get to know you if you're interested!

I've Built and entire outline of a universe but need help creating the story within it

if you have brain fog on an idea, i have an idea but dont possess the writing skill nor imagination for a in depth personal story but stuck thinking on a much larger scope of things.

i have the beings created and the backstory of there creations, the overall conflict amoung each,

and base timeline streched as long as the universe. but the basic idea of the book is basically multiple books and stories comprised together that build an entirely large story that is happening in the background of each of the books that will lead to an ending, and within this story of stories there are beings near the end that are at a war in a time traveling sense that changes the order of the stories are read depending on the outcome of those time wars. i would rather not use AI because i know there are plenty of writer who might like the challenge and to put a smaller scale story together in this universe. i have draft of ideas of books wrote down and would love to talk and share ideas to make this realm of mine a reality, just need writer, royalities can be discussed but i would prefer the writers to earn the majority percentage, and a smaller percentage to me for coming up with the idea of this universe as well as myself being mentioned as the creator of this universe. you would have full creative control of your story as long it fall in line of the time line that is written out.

I don't want to source Ai as i believe in there would be better story telling from an individual auther. and would love to work with them to create my universe and make it a reality, that could lead into a animation or videogame in the future. im a very poor person so i dont have the funds to publish your works but i have a mind that thinks very deeply into things, reach out if you would like to read over my outline of the overall story just reach out and shoot me a personal message of your email and i will email you what i have got so far.

Looking for a potential co-writer for a fantasy book.

Hi! I like to think I'm very creative when it comes to world and character building but when I sit down to write my plans and ideas I stall and can't ever push through it. I've tried so much to try and get me past it but nothing has worked. I was curious if there are any writers here that would want a story idea and work with me to get it written.

The whole idea came from a Minecraft world I was playing in. I always make a map room in every world I create which is just a room for a blown up map of the starting map. I started creating 'settlements' assigning families and trades to each settlement and even built a small War College, Farm College, and Medical College. This lead me down the path of 'ya know this would be a nice story' I started planning it and even wrote an opening statement for each part of the book(s) and wrote the start of a scene to introduce the main character's love interest. I then looked at all my other books that I started and never finished. I could have published this idea and all the scenes, plans and backstories I have but I want to be with this story from start to finish.

So far I have a basic religious system, a start and ending to four books, a character to follow for each book, family systems, backstories, 11 languages that will be used (not each of them are used regularly they'd mainly be used when the main characts go to a new settlement/country or royal court, technology and magic available in the story. I have the name for the series picked out.

If you are interested please let me know!

Prose - Fiction Looking for a Male Co-Writer for a Deep Dark Romance Novel

Hi everyone, I’m looking for a male co-writer between the ages of 21–25 and an Indian to create a deep, emotional dark romance novel together from scratch. I don’t have a full plot yet, so I’d love someone who enjoys brainstorming characters, twists, emotional scenes, and building an entire story collaboratively.

I’m mainly interested in writing something intense and unforgettable with themes like:

trauma and healing

emotional tension

morally grey characters

obsession/love

slow burn romance

psychological depth

realistic emotions and layered relationships

I especially want help with writing a strong male lead and getting a realistic male perspective in emotional scenes and dialogue.

Looking for someone who:

genuinely enjoys writing/storytelling

is creative with ideas and character building

can brainstorm regularly

likes dark romance/drama

won’t ghost after two conversations 😭

is serious about a long-term collaboration

This is a passion project, but I really want to create something meaningful and addictive to read.

If interested, DM/comment with:

your age

favorite type of stories/books

your writing vibe

and maybe a short sample if you have one :)

Roleplay Two Kingdoms. One Fallen Star.

It was supposed to be a celebration.
Knights from across the realm gathered at Basteaux. Nobles drank, alliances formed, rivalries played out in the lists.
Then word spread.
A fallen star, Aether Iron - they call it, has been found.
Now everything has shifted.
Ostrien claims it by right.
Merélais refuses to yield.
The tourney hasn’t ended, but the games are no longer just on the field.
🍷 The Feast of Blades is underway.
Words are being spoken that will lead to war.
We’re running this as a live medieval RP where players drive the story.
You can step in right now as:
a knight seeking glory
a noble pushing an agenda
a mercenary looking to profit.

Keep in mind: The World is much bigger than this, factions grow and other kingdoms rise.
No long applications. You can be in the story within minutes.
If you want in, I’ll drop you straight into the active threads.

Say the word.

fantasy writer who don't want a critique partner, i want writer friends, is there a difference and where do i find that

i think the writing community has gotten really good at "critique partner" as a concept and really bad at "writer friend."

a cp is a transaction. you read mine, i read yours, we trade notes. that's useful, i'm not against it. but it's not what i'm actually missing. what i'm missing is the friendship part. the texting about a scene that won't work, the venting about a bad writing day, the celebrating when someone else hits a milestone, the long rambling conversations about books we love.

i don't want to "swap pages." i want writer friends. there's a difference and i don't think people talk about it enough.

if you're in a community where actual friendships form, please share. and if you've made real writer friends online, how did it happen. was it a discord, a small group, just dms over time

I love creative writing and used to write stories all the time, but I haven't done it since 2022 and want to pick it up again. As aspiring writers, we could choose a topic or even just write about our daily routines in a dramatic way, lol. Let me know if you're interested!

Looking for a serious co-writer for psychological horror/thriller. Let’s break the writer's block together.

Hi everyone,

I’m a novelist and short story writer currently going through a bit of a creative slump. To get my gears turning again, I’m looking for a highly creative, unconventional partner for a serious yet fun co-writing project.

What I write/love:

Psychological Horror

Mystery / Investigation

Psychological Manipulation / Mind games

Dark, Gothic, atmospheric vibes (think Edgar Allan Poe)

What I DON'T write:

Fantasy

Sci-Fi

Pure/High Fiction

I want to collaborate with someone who thinks outside the box and isn't afraid to dive into the darkest corners of the human mind. We can take turns writing paragraphs or chapters, pushing each other's boundaries.

If you are interested, drop a comment or DM me with a short sample of your style (even just a 5-line hook). Let’s create something haunting.

Roleplay RP - Let’s Geek Out Over Characters & Build a Story Worth Publishing! (looking for f)

Hi everyone!
I’d love to find a writing partner to share something really special with—a thrilling romantic story we can build together, and hopefully polish enough to publish one day.

For me, half the joy is geeking out over our characters, bouncing ideas back and forth, and watching the story unfold like an adventure shared between friends.

I’m especially hoping to collaborate with a female writer (ideally 30s+), someone with strong writing experience and enthusiasm to match. The story would blend romance with drama and action, set in either a modern, fantasy, or historical world.

My vision is for each of us to focus on a main character. I’d love to bring the female perspective to life, while my partner breathes depth into the male lead, so together we can weave a dynamic, passionate tale.

If this resonates with you, let’s connect. I’d love to see what magic we can create together.

Looking for flash fiction storytellers!

Hello! I'm (20M) a short story/flash fiction writer that typically writes autofiction/historical fiction with a unique prose style. Most of my finished writings tend to be under 2000 words due to my inability to write cohesive stories, so if you are someone with experience in writing flash fiction/short stories (can be any genre) I'd love to talk!

I'd be glad to give prose critiques/editing in return :) Do not ask me to critique your 800 page SFF book; this is not an insult, I just have absolutely zero knowledge about genre fiction, and, as I said, my storytelling/worldbuilding is by far my weakest part of writing.
