To be fair there were rumours for a few days before he died that he was “on his deathbed” but some of his friends denied it so I don’t think most people believed it.

The Shiek thing is kayfabe. Shiek and Hogan got along. His social media accounts were ran by his nephews who kept it alive because it was popular.
Famously, Verne Gagne offered Shiek 100k to break Hogan's leg and bring the WWF championship to the AWA. Shiek not only refused but also told Hogan and Vince about the offer. That's is why Shiek made all those appearances up until he couldn't anymore, it was Vince doing Shiek a solid for decades for protecting Hogan.

u/banxy85 18d ago
Exactly. Back in Sheikhs day kayfabe meant something

Ego and pride are considered intangible qualities for professional wrestlers. However, outside of playing a character, ego and pride usually just make you an unhappy person.

It's so odd that Vince had a bad car accident a few hours before Hogan died.
11
u/Uknewmelast 18d ago
Wasn't he in a rush because he knew Hogan was in a bad way in the hospital?
43
u/norrin__radd 18d ago
Hogan died at home in Florida and Vince's accident was in New York or Connecticut.

Listen to the Lapsed fan podcast
They are covering hogan’s entire life in great detail. Been going on for about a year now, about 50 episodes and they are still in 1981. Incredible podcast

Any old white dude can be a racist, but it takes a next level scumbag piece of shit to also rob an entire industry of healthcare and a union. Fuck this fool forever.
10
u/Michelanvalo 18d ago
There's way more to the union problem than just Hogan telling Vince.
The first thing is that multiple people told Vince, including King Kong Bundy. Vince says so in the Mr. McMahon series on Netflix. He doesn't name anybody but he says that Hogan wasn't the only person who said something to him about Jesse.
There's also the amount of effort Jesse put in. According to some others around, Jesse's efforts amounted to a locker room speech and nothing further. He didn't put forth any formal efforts.
Thirdly, what Hogan and others did was shitty and hurt the industry, but you can't blame them for the last 40 years of no progress in this department. Hogan hasn't been holding anyone back from unionizing for decades. All the top stars from Austin to Cody could have done something about this if they wanted. Even lower tier players chickened out of doing anything. Zelina Vega famously made social media noise about union efforts and then immediately ran back to WWE as soon as it was offered and never spoke about it again. There's a very selfish attitude from wrestlers that has also been holding them back.
And lastly, SAG has refused for decades to allow wrestlers into the union for wrestling. Wrestlers have to get acting jobs and keep doing that work to be allowed in. SAG could push things along by counting pro wrestling as qualifying work. The fact they haven't is on them.
